Don't understand why folks are complaining about the distance to travel to a full AFL sized oval just once per week.  There aren't many AFL sized ovals in Sydney, especially in popular residential areas like Manly.

I reckon the players prefer to stay in Manly and travel once per week than stay in/around Blacktown.  They can swim, surf, golf in very nice surroundings.

Hardly a hardship posting.

It is entirely illogical to suggest that the AFL is somehow punishing Melbourne. The AFL needs Melbourne not just to survive, but to thrive. The alternatives for the AFL are much, much worse.

I know that there is a view that the AFL wants to find a way to introduce a team in Tasmania, but Melbourne disappearing is far more harmful to the AFL than the addition of a new team in Tassie. (On the other hand, if I were a North Melbourne supporter, I'd continue to be very nervous about my team's future in Victoria.)

As long as they can do sessions in smaller groups at Manly, maintain fitness, practice their elite skills..(on, wait!).  Its a solid trip in traffic, but the freeway makes it OK.  They can have some kumbayah singalongs on the bus.  Manly is a nice little neck of the woods.  They probably had to travel that far to get to Casey anyway.

Yes, if you were on holiday.

It is true that Sydney is under resourced for suitable grounds but it seems we get the short stick.

Hawks in Coogee get a 25 min drive to Drummoyne oval whilst the distance to Bankstown from Coogee is 28 km ( 35 mins). Manly to Drummoyne would be 35 mins. A fair outcome.

However we get the 50 km trip which will take at least an hour.

Anyway I get the point which is well made Lucifer, its all misplaced anger over a perceived slight on the club.  (It would be much easier for me to get to Drummoyne.)

Could be wrong, I believe swimming, surfing and golf are approved activities for players in hubs and if so players would be quite happy in Manly..

Given there are so many potting the club on absolutely everything at the moment, even something as trivial as this has got the ire raised.

50 k on a bus is better than in a car - some ability to move around etc.

No quarantine period for the players so golf and the like is all good. Unlike the Bulldogs, who can't play golf or surf for 2 weeks.

Is there a definitive list of which players are in the hub?

Not going:

Injured: KK, Nietschke, Hore, Petty,

"Players including Braydon Preuss, Oskar Baker, Josh Wagner and Corey Wagner have been left behind to conduct intensive coaching with several assistant coaches."

With 33 players in the hub, club website more reliably reporting 12 players remaining in Victoria = 45 players on list. The Hun stated 9 to remain, but don't let the unconfirmed facts get in the way of a provocative news story. The Definitive list currently seems elusive? At least on the official MFC webpage. Seems a little bit hush hush ... Meanwhile our sources reliably indicate Jordon and 'Red' Sparrow have accompanied the top priority MFC mission to NSW.  Additionally we'd like to quash a speculative earlier report of Angus Brayshaw sans Akubra heading west...

My guess is that the NSW border will be closed for a minimum of two months. That assumes a month to get on top of the virus numbers and then a month of verification and political manouevering.  (Early reports suggest nearly 200 cases for Melbourne today).

You would have to think that if there's a risk of a break out in another State it's NSW which would complicate things.

And of course there's still the Essendon catch up match to play.

I couldnt give a [censored] how much of a hardship it is for the team atm. Couldnt possibly be worse than being one of their supporters.

Its only once a week and they are still getting paid. Cant imagine anyone at the club complaining about it anyway. It would just sound like desperate excuse making.

We will probably manage to turn the trip into a disaster regardless. If we cant beat Gold Coast, we cant really expect to beat anyone else this season. With all the current media pressure we will see if it is actually in the players to rise, or if they are already showing their best.

God what a horrible thought..... we might already be playing our best footy.

*Vomit.

Not that it affects most of us, but will the Melbourne V GC be played in front of a crowd?

Can't imagine more than a few hundred locals that would be interested in attending the game.

Looks like Manly oval, a cricket ground just behind their hotel. I think its used by a rugby team in the Shute shield. Much better option albeit with no posts. Sounds like our management have complained.

GIants stadium under lights a good option, anyone know what time?

GWS v Hawks game had a crowd. Not sure what the maximum number is. Strange thing was the broadcaster still used the canned crowd noise.

GC v Dees .... probably cost too much to open the ground

I contacted the club this morning and NSW members will get an email once the AFL has sorted out the attendance process. The government is allowing crowds of up to 10K I think. Its a small ground (spectator wise) but actually pretty good for spectators. It has locally run food outlets and a bit of a country ground feel given its size and very easy to get to if there is nothing else on in the olympic precinct.

indeedy-doody - I'm with you there Uncle - if 33 are going, I make that 12 didn't go, so we need 4 more names.  If, as you say, Sparrow and Jordon have gone then that narrows the field.

I think it's almost certain one is Bradtke.  If I had to guess the other 3 they would probably be Bedford, Chandler, Dunkley.

But it would be nice to know for sure.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
