Brad Miller - GWS Forward line & Assistant Coach. Get him to Melbourne?

Impressed with what I heard on fox footy tonight as he answered questions on the upcoming game. I see in his resume he was at the Kangaroos during their prelim stints in 2013, 14. GWS NEAFL head coach, forward line and now assistant at GWS. That's some pretty elite experience.

Surely you'd look at getting him in to replace Chaplain end of year to work with the forward line. If he can help us improve, see some success, then he'll add more strings to his bow and will move on to a head coach role somewhere else. Big win.

He'd also be a potential caretaker in waiting in late-2021 (worst case scenario) with a chance to make a mark as a head coach, given he might not have the actual forward line pieces to make a radical difference next year, seeing that we've not yet replaced Hogan.

He was never at the kangaroo's? Pretty sure he went from playing at Richmond straight to our coaching team back in 2014.

You are correct there, was in MFC footy dept. and went to Sydney after his marriage went bust so he could be close to his kids, he won't come back anytime soon.

Hate to see him as a forward coach (even if he is a nice bloke). During his time with Melbourne as a KPF he was great at leading and taking marks but never seemed to have the confidence to take his shot at goals, preferring to pass off to somebody else and, more often than not, turning it over.

Agree.

Plenty of evidence to suggest that the more limited the player, the better the coach.

When the situation called for a kick, he would handpass. When a handpass was in order, he would kick. He didn't seem to have a good football brain. Not a good starting point fora coach.

How would he have gone at CHB.?

How would his style shape go today as a CHB. 

 

It's almost exactly what I envisage the new tall defender draftee,  that I want our club to recruit.

 

Thanks for mentioning him,  as I just realised he is what I'm after,  for our Key defence Qtr back.

Sorry to divert slightly but it may be that Dean Cox has not got a long time left working with John Longmire. That was the impression I had last night. I have always been impressed with Cox who was above the drug controversies at West Coast. A very good and smart footballer. Extremely focused and hard. What a coup it would be to have him as ruck/stoppage coach next year. I believe he will be a senior AFL coach.

He was a natural defender in mindset.

Ironically, he would probably be much more valuable on-field now than he was back in his playing time.  He was never a true 'target' forward close to goals and whenever he found his best form it was as a long-leading link player, going into the wider spaces out from half-forward.

With the increased 'tightness' of defense due to shorter quarters and fresher legs, the key forward targets are getting fewer opportunities to be one-on-one or find a space to lead into anywhere within 50m of goal, so a lot of the tall forwards this season are doing their best work by providing a steady point across half-forward or even further away, allowing the attack to calm itself and lower its eyes (in a double-sense) to pick out the shorter forwards who just keep running around until the defense gets dizzy.

But, as noted, Miller has hid head screwed on in that astonishing way where being close to your kids is a top priority in life.  Damn these new-age rubbish attitudes, eh?

Brad is the type/size of player I'd like us to recruit for CHB... in that,  his balance and athleticism and attack at the ball.   To me,  his is the right size height  X  strong build,  that gives him stability on his feet  and in the air.   Someone like him with nice disposal would be fantstic.

Miller could be a very intimidating player who I think was suspended for rough play on a couple of occasions! His crash and bash approach caused injury to more than one opponent!

Would he be a good fit to the Dee’s coaching panel, I don’t know, but I used to enjoy watching him as a development coach when he was with us ( and I enjoyed seeing his former wife as well)!

I seem to recall Miller as a player with limited skills.BUT I did enjoy his attack on the ball. He went to the right places and created a contest. It may have been that teamates just bombed it forward where he made a contest but at least he provided a target. He was often caught in that no mans zone, too far out to kick a score but too close to congestion as defenders flooded back.

i always felt we did not use his contesting style well, players didn't use the space he provded nor did they use the spillage that he created. Not enough run past and not enough protection. 

His endeavour and workrate were aspects that are required in even greater measure now and if he could instil that in some of our players we might benefit.
