Why would he? Performance means nothing when you're cruising on a 6 year deal on big money.

Really?

No idea why people are so quick to bag Gus. Not our worst

Gus was far from the worst against the Bombers. He was playing a role in a badly beaten team and he mainly did what was asked of him. Personally I think he should be part of the inside mid rotation predominantly. With his flexibility and experience he cover through the back half, on a wing or even having a run in the forward 50. He is a smart footballer.

For mine, play him in the mids a majority of the time.

I would have liked to see him given a run in there last game.

it does not matter where he plays on the ground if he is one head know away from retirement, he should give it up now and think of his future.

I’m surprised that people are surprised that our coaches don’t or are very slow at pulling new positional changes during the game.

No at all see my posts Goody and others are too slow by far. They protects some players and throw the book at others. It's very often your best players need moving as they can cause greater change through their ability.
Gary Lyon in commentary got it right about changes. Was quarters ahead and dome did not get the light of day at all.  Half time some major belated moves should have been made with Petty and Tmac  plus May eas not necessarily on the right player. We tried to protect him being the last defender when he may have played better out from goal. I have never seen him so negative looking. This  being him or Lever out spooks each other and gets to Petty and Bowser who also lose confidence. Once this happens most of our one on one defenders are negative. Interestingly McVee still played  his natural game.

We need a major meeting about our defence it's not as tight as it should be.

Disgusting comment. Fail to understand Gus team position today and should have been moved earlier in the day.  There were others on big money who failed to impact the play on the day.  Despite our lethargy I still believe players try but their energy levels were very low for most of the game except for Clarry after half time etc. as he led the way as usual.

Gus deserves as much praise as LJ for turning the match for us in the 2021 GF 3rd quarter. Not through talent and flair, but through sheer effort and grind.  I don't know where his best position is, but I know he will be the first to step up in the big moment/s again. Handy player to have if you're contending.

It's a long season guys. Players are entitled to periods of bad form. Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater yeah?

When you play a team defence everyone looks bad when it breaks down. But nobody lost as many one on ones as Steven May. Love the guy but that was his worst game for the club

Teams have also worked out how to decoy May and Lever. Sydney does it with Buddy running up the ground trying to expose Lever one on one where he isn't at his best.

When we are playing at our best May is the goal keeper, Petty takes the high half fwd like Cameron and Lever is floating. Gus and Bowey and Hibberd tale the smlls/mid-size

Let's keep both.  That bathwater is for the drinking, not the throwing out.  :D

What???

An interesting tidbit:

AFL Fantasy Averages (Bolded = contract years)

2018 - 105.1
2019 - 88
2020 - 79* (adjusted for COVID shorter quarters)
2021 - 66.5
2022 - 99.1
2023 - 73.8

Nah. I dont apologise for having high expectations on talented players that are on big contracts who aren't performing at a level that they should be. Gawn, Petracca, Oliver.. they perform at a level each and every week.

If you think my comment is the worse then your half attempt at poor stereotyping here is certainly right up there.

Lol how so?

Clearly the coaching staff didn't think so, because he finished 14th in the best fairest after playing every game?

His 2018 and 2022 year are clearly his two best years in terms of stats and also internal achievements.

held down the non langdon wing all year and played a huge part in our first flag in 57 years

there is more to playing well than just stats. if he plays mid or HB he obviously gets more touches

was one of our most reliable all year in 2021. sacrificed his game for defensive running and positioning

poor? you must be joking

Gus had a fantastic 2021 finals series & deserves credit for being one of the main reasons the momentum shifted in our favour during the grandfinal. While he's capable of having good games in the role, he isn't a good wingman and was average for the entirety of the regular season.

He finished outside the top 10 in the B&F, we priorised Jordon over Gus all throughout 2022 & specifically went after Hunter for season 2023 onwards. It's pretty clear Goodwin & co don't rate him as a permanent winger, nor should they given his lack of athleticism.

The defensive running stuff is nice, but the better wingman (Hunter & Langdon) are capable of doing that and actually getting the footy.

you said he was poor in 2021. that is incorrect

Brayshaw is a good average footballer as the late Jack Dyer would say - and is played out of position. His role should be as a mid - rotation .
