I can't see both Jetta and Hibberd being dropped, maybe one of them. Hibberd for me had the worse game of the two, though Jetta was well off as well.

I admit I can't remember that far back but I don't remember OMac being particularly awful, I mean I know in general his bar is set kinda low for a lot of people. I can see Rivers coming in for Hibberd, I've been hearing a lot of positive things about the kid, and he looked good in the scratch match vs North.

This is what I think, make of it what you will. I'd love to say HB gets a gig but I think they're going to play a longer game with him and make him tick more boxes before they bring him in.

B: JETTA , MAY, LEVER

HB: SALEM, OMAC, HARMES

C : LANGDON, PETRACCA, TOMLINSON

HF: PICKETT, WEIDEMAN , JONES

F: MELKSHAM, T.MCDONALD, FRITSCH

FOLL: GAWN, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, HANNAN, RIVERS, AVB (if fit) or JACKSON (or BENNELL a smokey)

EMRG: HIBBERD, LOCKHART, SMITH, JACKSON

  • Demonland changed the title to CHANGES: Rd 02 vs Carlton

Normally I have a pretty strong idea as to the team we should select. This week however there are about 30 players we could pick from that I would be completely comfortable with. The likes of Bennell, Smith and vandenBerg are all particularly hard to place because they are all probably best 22 when fully fit, but they're coming off interupted preseasons.

B: Jetta, May, Lockhart

HB: Lever, O.Mac, Salem

C : Langdon, Oliver, Tomlinson

HF: Jones, T.Mac, Melksham

F: Pickett, Weidemann, Fritsch

FOLL: Gawn, Viney, Petracca

IC: Brayshaw, Harmes(mid), Bennell, Hibberd

EMER: Smith, ANB, Hannan, Rivers

Top selections, from what is available ... this is an ideal time / the season has ideal shape ahead to blood a few, forcing a few previous 'regulars' to re-consider and prove their worth to the team. Y'know, for what it is worth, with this line-up, I would swap your possies for Jackson and JSmith; (ie: Jackson to CHB as an attacking, defensive clearance man and JSmith to CHF as he is a genetic forward with his father's chromosomes).

Joel Smith also talked up highly by Chaplin and Richardson.

He also explained some of the reasoning behind playing him (deep) back.

OMac shut Darling down if I remember so gets a game.  Any info on Sparrow, I liked the look of him in preseason but who knows now? Think Harmes is wasted down back, he is a tagger/run with player and midfield goal kicker. Maybe Smith comes in down back and any intel on AVB?

i think everyone likes marty hore cos he's a good honest toiler

the fact remains that he was in and out of our side last year when we finished 17th

unfortunately - a bit like jayden hunt - if he's in our best 22 we're really not a very good side

Who plays on Eddie Betts if Jetta doesn't?? Nup gets another crack. Hibberd is on thin Ice!

Looks like Dark Blue forwads and mids are the A team and the Roal Blue Defence is the A team. So notably it's May, Jetta, Harmes, Salem, Smith, Rivers in the royal blue defence. Assuming Lever is on the bench during this it wouldn't be unreasonable to sugest thats the leading backline lineup a week out.  Wouldn't be unhappy with that although would leave Lockhart incredibly unlucky. Bennel in the B team midfield, but that's hardly surprising. Also of intrest, Chandler, Jackson and Hannan appear in the 'A' team forwadline

Lever would have to be in a bit of doubt.

Missed today’s intra-club and channel 7 reported he also missed a training session during the week.

wow that first tweet from mcgowan is atrocious ball use

smith takes a nice mark from a forward 50 entry bomb, takes forever to decide what to do, kicks it straight to t mac, who bombs long to a pack, may hacks it out...straight to t mac, who get it to viney who bombs it indiscriminately, before a pack and nice handball from smith and then dunkley is the only player to hit a target coming out the other side of the backline

what was that about learning our lessons re f50 entries?

How has Petty gone? No one has talked about him all season.

have to admit that was my first thought too...

But that first kick was to a 1 on 1 and to Fritch's advantage, he should probably have marked that himself much less let Smith mark it. And the May kick should get a pass, under pressure with no other option. And Viney's kick did go straight to Max who dropped a mark he would often take.

I keep forgetting Betts is back at Carlton, Martin also killed it for the Blues against Richmond so Jetta might get a run on him should he play forward at times.

I think Hibberd (with runs on the board) is more likely to get a run in round 2 but as you said he’s on thin ice.

Must agree; Hibberd is a present worry and possibly needs to re-prove himself in the best '25-ish'. At the same time, OMac is not in the best 30 - even on good days one quarter at a time. The forward line has some potential, so I'd like to see TMac going back to CHB to allow for the mobility needs of the modern backline and, as in the past with such space, he does create drive to the midfield and into the forward line with some depth, and can keep up with and out-endure most nifty forwards and taller 'resting players. Just an opinion....

Sorry Pates but I dont like the half backline

seems like lockhart and smith are part of the back 7 plans, along with harmes, who presumably 'floats back' after starting outside the back 6?

gives the blues are 'going small' with only mckay and casboult likely forwards, plus pittonet being relieved by the latter in ruck, it would seem that o mac would be the unlucky tall out UNLESS lever is crocked again

B: Jetta - May - Smith
HB: Salem - Lever - Hibberd
? Langdon - Petracca - Harmes
HF: Jones - T Mac - Melksham
F: Weideman - Fritsch - Pickett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/c: Brayshaw - Tomlinson - Bennell - Lockhart
Emerg: Jackson - Bedford - ANB - O Mac

DJ Clearly Sam is our 2nd best ruck/forward/ around the ground option at this stage

His 20 posies inc some good handballs and Contests.

He gets far more marks and value when used as a Ruck backup and perhaps that his role !

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
