Jake Lever - Our next captain?

Featured Replies

Yes, according to Max skippers-earmark-their-successor

Lever seems a natural and in the right age group for when Max vacates the chair.

Not sure what JV7 makes of Max's prediction.ย  It may have been a bit more diplomatic for Max to nominate 2-3 players who could step up.ย  I would have suggested Lever, Oliver (both potentially elite with great footy minds and media speakers) and Viney as he may develop his talents and earn the job back.

I personally wanted Lever as co captain next Max. Really rate his leadership.ย ย

But yes, it seems there are other who really justย  simply don't rate Viney as a leader. It feels like Jack's got a lot of work to do if he wants theย top gig again.

Lever has played 19 of a possible 45 matches with us. To be generous,ย perhaps 4 of those games were of a quality that would justify his 2 first round picks, $800k, 5 year contract.ย
Has to do way, way more before there is talk of him succeeding Max

Yes agree with this also. Though the 2 games I have seen in the Marsh series points to him having a really good season tpuch wood with injury.

As long as heโ€™s not captain from the grandstands all the time.ย

Max will be captain for quite a few years so Lever has plenty of time to stake his claim, as do others.

Lever is the most natural leader on our list. He just needs to stay fit and on the field for a prolong period of time before we give him an official leadership position.

I think Levers leadership qualities have been we documented, however,ย I agreeย  with 'Lord Travis' that he has lots of work to do yet before he becomes one of our leaders.

Ouch! Just days into a new Captaincy and some of us are talking successors already! Gawn was a good and natural choice, for heaven's sake so let us see him through - and excel - in the role. There are a few others, home grown unlike Lever - who might be considered one day but who really has the confidence to speculate and name at this point in time?

Tell that to Riley Beveridge who wrote the article or to Max who answered the question the way he did.

I was simply bringing it to DL's attention.ย  I reckon it is worth fans knowing what our captain thinks.

Sure, and fairy Nuff. I just find it all a little premature, that's all.ย

Pity the AFL thought up this way of generating click-bait just when we have a new captain.ย  Max must have been tempted to sayย  "Ask me again when I've been captain for more than a millisecond".

Lever has been touted as a future captain since his underage footy years. ย However, I believe heโ€™dย need to put in a few years of consistent, injury free football to prove that his body is up to it.

An experienced Captain would have known how to answer this question without possibly getting teammates offside,

A good Captain will learn from this and think of a team-first response in future rather than giving the reporter the answer thatย he wants.

Not with that moustache? ย Surely? ย Then again Max has the bush ranger beard. ย Hmmm...

I don't know who our next capt after Max is and at stage I don'tย want to.

Let Max see what he can do.ย ย

Personally, I can'tย see Lever as our next skipper after Max

Agree Luciferย

You agree with LH or with me? Personally, I need subtitles whenever Clarry opens his mouth, and I don't think he much enjoys being in front of the camera. I love him to bits, but I don't think he'll ever get close to the official captaincy - which today is as much anย off-field role as on. The fact that Jack Viney has him easily covered for eloquence speaks volumes.ย

Here's a sample from our own website, which would present a challenge for most transcribers:ย https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/238959/clarry-s-life-burgers-swimming-and-fifa

Have a listen to his B&F speeches.ย  imv, he peaks very well and will get better as he matures and gets a bit of coaching.ย  Has many of the attributes to be a leader of our club.ย

No worries LH - I think we will continue to have a difference of opinion. But I would agree that young Clarry has matured a great deal since joining the club. I still struggle to understand what he's saying though.ย

Speeches are important for leaders 'LH',ย  just ask the Donald.

Personally,ย  I'd prefer someone who's honest straight down the line, ย  to how refined they might sound on the media.

Iโ€™m looking forward to seeing how great Lever is going to be for the Demons, rather than hearing aboutย it. Until then...

Interesting, to anoint someone as a future captain I would've thought they would need to have runs on the board on the field. While Jake has shown what he can do when fit he needs to be out on the park before he can show his on field leadership capabilities.

For me (of the non-Viney sort) I see Gus as someone who could lead us in the future.
