Problem is he can’t take a mark. He no longer has the excuse of being out muscled. He has been on the list long enough and spent more than enough time in the gym to build the required strength. I hate bagging Melbourne players but the kid is Brent Grgic number 2. All false reputation no AFL ability. Well that’s a fair old sledge Wrecker. I remember watching Grgic and occasionally he would do something to show he had a special talent. Ended up being a poor mans Jack Watts. To continue the analogy, and Sam isn’t there yet, but he is trending towards a David Cordner trajectory. Brilliant genes and family history, can look a million dollars on the odd occasion but overall disappointing. 1 Quote

Always got hands on the ball rarely held the mark. Quote

rpfc 29,030 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Jackson isn’t ready from what I have seen. Weideman is not guaranteed a spot either but Jackson is doing things that raw talents do and a mature club with a set team and an idea on how to develop players wouldn’t play him unless forced to through injuries. 4 Quote

As KPF I seriously doubt it. Quote
Moonshadow 17,678 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I honestly think Tmac is the one who should be feeling the heat atm. Has shown little in the preseason games. Certainly looking rusty. Quote
Rogue 585 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I'm not sure Weid or Jackson warrant a spot for round 1. If we think TMac can pinch-hit and our forward line will cope with smaller types, then I'd just go with a more mobile setup. Fritsch released to the forward line and Melksham fit and firing makes it a palatable option. 1 Quote

Agree 100%, mate. I thought Jackson gave us a small glimpse of how quickly he could improve on Friday night. I thought he was way off the pace in the third term, which is no surprise at all, but then he really got better in the last and showed his great athleticism and appetite for the contest with his second and third efforts around the ball. I'm firmly in the Weideman camp for Round 1 as he has the bigger body and more experience, but he better not get too comfortable, as LJ could very quickly work his way into the side if Weid's form is sub-par. 5 Quote
Straight Sets Simon 23,113 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 In the game day thread I made an off-the-cuff comment that Weideman is our new Brad Miller, but I’m starting to believe it more. https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=12&pid1=4171&fid1=C&playerStatus2=I&tid2=12&pid2=288&fid2=C&type=A Quote

The Jackson FIX 3,512 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I’d go really small and quick against West Coast. Our forward line looked the best it has in a long time when Melk and Frit we’re isolated up there with the ball coming in quick. The game plan needs to revolve around that, not trying to find the ‘right’ big man to be there when we bomb it in (Wet Toast’s backline will towel us up if your entry looks anything like that). Quote

Ham 741 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I thought coming into this season, Weid was the player who needed to make the most improvement (from last season) and I think him going into ruck, is not helping that. I'd rather see McDonald play as a back up ruck and leave Weid to roam the forward, instill some confidence in him, because if he can start clunking them, that's a massive asset that we didn't have last year. Jackson - leave him at Casey for the better part of this year and as others have said, bring him in late in the season for some game experience. Ready to fire big in 2021. With the access we can have to the goals now with Fritsch, Melksham, Brown, Kozzy, Petracca, etc.. I don't think the future is with McDonald (especially with his form since the end of 2018). It's Jackson and especially Weid, so I'd rather see him running down there, than McDonald. Quote

Does putting him the ruck help his game? I'm far from a Brown fan but he does at least lead up and draw the ball towards him. Doubt he can or will want to do anything in the ruck. Weideman doesn't get his hand on many hit outs but he can be useful at ground level and around the ground he's at least getting hands to the marks which means he's not being out marked! The 2 Talls, and Brown. The mobile Claytons tall, perfect high forward at CHF, to add to Tomlinson and Gawn thru the mid section. Plenty of marking and running power across the Midfield. Allowing both TMc and Weide to control inside 60Mtrs. https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/556016/weideman-eyeing-a-consistent-2020-season Quote
