Might be a dumb question and a obvious answer, but did we ever looking going back towards Albert Park area? Obviously Cricket Victoria have theΒ Junction Oval locked in but there is a fair bit of land with heaps of ovals there. Surely one of them could be upgraded and used with a elite training facility built next to it?

Gave up on that 20 years ago.Β  No access during Grand Prix period, including the weeks/months before and after while all the infrastructure is moved.

Really Β DRD you are unrealistic and 20 years behind time. George has replied but my response is far more cynical and pointed.

Do you really think we can build an elite training and admin establishment for the next five./ Ten decades along with associated community facilities by hawking some local oval ( with or without fence) by stealth overnight?Β

Obviously you haven’t read much of the previous 224 pages let alone the last 50 recently to have Β any idea of the 2025 expectations for an AFL Club for the next 5/10 decades.Β

It requires much more than your piggy bank to succeed so the saving is suggested to start asap.Β

I initially considered removing this post and issuing you a private warning about your aggressive or overly passive-aggressive tone, particularly towards new posters. However, I believe a public reminder is more appropriate.

Pull your head in. Goes as a general warning to others too. We all barrack for the same team

Nice to meet you mate, glad you were able to have a nice respectful response to the question.

Not sure what's got you so upset about a simple question but honestly hope your day gets better from here on in.

I did think about the GP - figured we could just use Casey during that period - but probably didn't consider the fact there is such a bump in/bump out period.

It's a shame because the venue the facility that Cricket Victoria have built there is great and if you were able to find space around Ross Gregory Oval/Harry Trott oval it would be a really good sports facility area - but as was nicely pointed out above those ovals are used for community use so would make it difficult.

Think of the possibilities during GP weekend though, you could hold functions, create a viewing platform and sell tickets for huge coinΒ πŸ€‘

Hopefully we are going to get an announcement soon that the project is approved and going ahead.

That will of course narrow the discussion on our future training ground and administration centre, which will be at Caulfield Racecourse.

Definitely an easy assumption to make and I would have thought the same before I moved to the area. Having seen it though it's chaotic from as early as Jan where the grandstands and other marquee structures are almost fully up, the bump out period takes ages and feels like half the year.Β

Would be an amazing spot but seems beyond the realms of possibility. I do like the hospitality idea though!

I used to be involved on a committee level at a soccer club, when the GP held in late March some of the clubs that play out of Albert Park (Middle Park SC, Albert Park SC etc) were still locked out of their grounds for a few weeks after, always got fixture reversal requests cos Football Victoria's super computer simply doesnt care about requests/preferences aha

Yeah it's crazy isn't it!

By the way I always liked Albert Park SC better, Middle Park seemed a bit up themselves.Β

I just wanted to make the important note that one of the new Melbourne Demons board members in Chris Barlow is part of the Barlow Family which owns/owned 7-Eleven. The Barlow Family net worth is about $1.95 billion dollars.

So, hopefully, Chris Barlow, and other wealthy Melbourne supporters are generous enough to help financially contribute towards the development of our new Home Base at Caulfield Racecourse.

I would most certainly contribute a significant donation too, but I am still waiting to win the lottery. Fingers crossed though! πŸ˜‰πŸ€žπŸ»

I had forgotten that the AFL paid $200M for Docklands.

While not quite broke the AFL has spent all its rainy day money and is looking to put away $100M ($20M x 5 years) to replenish its future fund.

As this money has to come at the expense of someone be prepared for some hard lobbying.

The article below by Caroline Wilson is a good read on where the money went and how they hope to replace it.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/revealed-dillon-s-100-million-plan-to-disaster-proof-the-afl-20250320-p5ll45.html

The war chest would amount to the re-establishment of the future fund first created by then AFL boss Andrew Demetriou in 2007. That fund is now empty – first significantly drained with the 2016 purchase of Marvel and later emptied during the COVID pandemic.

The AFL is also apprehensive of the current media landscape and the clubs have been warned that the game should create an insurance policy against the threat of its media backers, the Seven Network and Foxtel, struggling to honour their contracts.

That unlikely but still feared prospect sits alongside a costly and unprofitable AFLW competition, the competition’s expansion with a 19th team in Tasmania, and ongoing concerns about the debt-ridden weaker clubs.

Don't hold your breath Mr. Leg.Β

I'm sure someone would be able to give me a good reason why it was never a chance but I reckon the missed opportunity (apart from the obvious Olympic park one that we all know about) was the Elwood 9 hole golf club that's now being turned into wetlands. It's right next the VFA base of operations, already has two existing ovals, tennis courts, could've easily added swimming facilities as well, and it all could've been in one revamped complex. Also near Elsternwick station and trams so easy for public transport, could've made it a boutique sized stadium for AFLW.

It's obviously a moot point now as the local council has committed to turning it into wetlands.

I really hope this Caulfield project pans out.

I think you've nailed it yourself.... wetlands. The water table there is horrible - prone to flooding would not be ideal to build onΒ

Been chatting with someone close to this opportunity in the venues industry and many contacts in AFL.

Not this budget, but the next one - this goes ahead was their belief. Looking forward to very likely but a few things to sort. AFL wants it to happen.

Agree.

Alternative talk is like trying to come up with a system at the casino to cheat at blackjack.Β

If we have another poor year on field, I suspect that supporter attention will turn to off field progress (or lack there of). Frustration for poor team performance will also exacerbate current annoyance for the lack of meaningful info given by the club and heat will be turned up to 11.

  • NON-MFC: Round 10

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury toΒ  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - β€œnam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is β€œevery heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeatΒ  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?
