I'm truly grateful for all the reports from our track watchers at this time of year. But, let's face it. Summer is boring. So, we need diversions. I'd like to ask Demonlanders, which famous first line best sums up your feelings about the MFC. I've proposed three below, but feel free to add your own from any written work whether it's a book, play, song, etc. My top three, in order, are:

"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." (from "The Go-Between", by LP Hartley)

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." (from "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy)

"Now is the winter of our discontent." (from Richard III, by William Shakespeare).

'Yesterday I woke up sucking on a lemon' - from Everything in its Right Place by Radiohead.

Edit: Bonus points for the first line of second verse: 'There are two colours in my head'

Edited by Skuit

"Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was given an MFC membership."

Shakespeare;

’as flies to wanton boys are we to the Gods, they kill us for their sport’

Shakespeare sums up 40 years of the last 55! Unfortunately !!

Made Finals 13 times and missed closely  out in last round in 1976 and 2017 which I think caused far more discontent than any of the 40 years many which F was only a dirty word to Dees fans:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" - A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens

But mostly the worst of times.

The whole first sentence would be even more befitting for our preseasons on Demonland; '. . . it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”

Thomas Hardy - The Darkling Thrush last lines:

Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.

Cohen's lyrics in Anthem:

".....Don't dwell on what has passed away or what is yet to be...."

".....Ring the bells that still can ring ........there is a crack in everything that's how the light gets in,"

or closer to home, old Ernie wrote in the Old Man and the Sea:

"It is silly not to hope, besides I believe it is a sin..."

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?..

How did I become a Melbourne supporter?

This dream is for you, so pay the price
Make one dream come true, you only live twice...

Nancy Sinatra

"Your mission is to proceed up Punt Road, pick up coach Goodwin's path at Gosch's Paddock, follow it, and learn what you can. When you find the coach, infiltrate his team by whatever means available and terminate the coach's command. He's out there operating without any decent restraint, totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct, and he's still on the field commanding players."

I am quoting from schoolboy memory

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
