I wonder what old mate Garry Buccanara thinks of Harmesy getting a new 5 year deal?

Seeing his ranking of Harmes proved to me that commentators look at clubs in isolation of who they think they should be watching. Harmes had a dip like most of the list but he was still a B+ and easily one of our better performers. 5 years might seem like a lot but he's worked hard to get where he is and being a Dee through and through he'll be stoked he's tied to us for the foreseeable future.

Really like the way he goes about his footy - hopefully he continues to improve on the same trajectory

Love the fact he is a Demon supporter - how cool is that for him to live out a boyhood dream

Keep up the good work Harmesy hopefully the ultimate prize is not far away

Good on him

Five years... front or backloaded...

My guess is backloaded..

Agreed. Harmes still had 2 years to run on his contract, so fair old extension.

Wonder if his contract has been structured (or re-structured) to give us some flexibility as early as this offseason.

Good stuff Harmsey

Good news story from the rookie list. I did like what I saw early days from the #43. A duel sided player that had a bit of grunt and pace and wasn’t scared to go in.

Be interesting to see how he goes off half back at times in 2020. Plenty to work with. Good set of hands. Good signing.

Harmsey is quite literally living the dream of all us supporters.

His legend will continue to grow as the years unfold.

Kane Cornes on SEN was going to say something about a recent Melbourne signing, but I got out of the car. I assumed he was going to criticise Melbourne for signing Harmes to such a long deal.

Correct.

I really like Harmes, by the back end of 2018 he was one of the best 20 players in the AFL for while there. However, not sure we needed to sign him to a five year deal as I doubt he was going anywhere else.

That Buckenara rated him below one of the Wagner's tells me all I need to know about his footy knowledge.

If that's true, Bucky is an idiot.

Just for accuracy he signed a 4 year extension/deal, currently contracted until end 2020.

Very happy with this and I think there is still a lot of upside. I dare say he fancies himself as MFCs Dusty, and I reckon and assume he'll be striving to achieve that level.

With his durability "touch wood/head" he can play 200. Absolute fairy tale that would be for a kid who grew up a Demon!

Five years for this bloke.  Wow.    You only give 5 year deals to certified superstars and even then thats a lot.

He is signed until the end of 2024. This is the first season of the deal and he has been appalling.  Heads must roll.

He played so lazily tonight,  avoided contact. Looked slow. Another ridiculous decision from the mfc board

You guys were watching a different game from me. As soon as he went into the midfield we started to win the ball and get it inside 50.

He needs to play midfield or forward.

Trade Viney to open up space for a legit winger and get Harmes in as the fourth mid in the rotation

I said this in the post game thread. He got us going with his run in the last quarter after he was finally shifted onto the midfield..

Who would have thought huh..

I've changed my mind on the letting Viney walk as a FA. I think we need to keep him. Particularly, when we'll need more mids in the longer format return next year.

He should be very rarely played as the number mid though. His go is defensive mid or pressure forward.

Of course they were - look at the three who posted before you.

He was given a crack at a midfield/forward role and he immediately looked better than he has for weeks.

The mind boggles with some of our recent contract decisions.

Four years to Goodwin and five to Harmes, with seemingly no threat of either being poached, are just two for starters

It’s laziness. Long contracts = less work constantly renegotiating and renewing them more frequently.

Love him being signed up for 5 years.

Class player who is being played incorrectly this year.

Get him 70% Forward / 30% Midfield.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
