I think Robertson may be the target

Take Young at 3 having put it out there you're keen on Young and Jackson. Also mention Kemp with Robertson

Freo would love Robertson and Jackson and may gamble on taking Jackson with 7 and us taking Kemp

Starting to think if Robterson is there at 8 we'll snap him up. Taylor seemed to rate him quite highly and all the reports I have read is that he's leadership is highly rated.

How do you rate him @Pennant St Dee?

Also an inside mid so no doubt would be in the frame here. Completely agree.

Haven't seen a second of him, but based on the name alone he sounds super clumsy.

The beauty with pick 3 now that 1 & 2 are done, is we can say and do whatever we want.

We take whoever we want and we can play with the minds of other clubs on 8 which is more up in the air.

I think most clubs would know who we take at 3, as do most draft predictions. I can’t recall a draft where the first 3 picks at least, weren’t known by the industry.

After the first few you can get a surprise or 2 that can throw selections around a bit, but that usually doesn’t happen until a bit later.

in other words we play mind games over pick 8 and see where it lands.

After listening to podcast I’d be shocked if we didn’t trade one or more picks. He said that there’s 3 players we are looking at for pick 3. Also said if a club came to us for a pick swap and told us what player they want that might make it easier. If we split pick 3 with GWS and put a veto on 3 players they would still prob be happy.

Still think we will prob hold on to 3 but if we get the deal we want it’s gone.

I think pick 8 will def be traded. Really feels like we are trying to force Freos hand with seeming very keen on Jackson and also mentioned Henry, also mentioned doing trades with teams who have father son or academy players.

Still think we will split 8 into 10 & 22

My favourite part about Jason Taylor's interview is that so many listen to then then proceed to come on DL and explain why it fits in with their predetermined opinion on who we should pick/pick we should trade.

So anyway here's how it fits into my opinion.  I liked him actually saying that pick 3 is bring treated like pick 1, means we are unlikely to trade it unless it's an insanely good deal. He also spoke about 97 but without explicitly saying so it sounded like he thought that we would be trading in from there, which would have to mean that we're likely thinking about trading 8, hopefully we wait to do it on the night, just incase someone slips to 8.

On that note I was surprised when Cal asked about Serong at 8 and not at 3... given that he has had him right up around picks 3/4 for much of the year, wonder if he has mail that he might be slipping with the likes of Jackson coming up the order and clubs still planning on taking Kemp before 8.

On a side note: I'm also fascinated to know who JT wanted to play state footy but couldn't get it to happen. What I'd give to sit in on those meetings where they go through and plan their whole draft.

I like him for his leadership very much a Joel Selwood clone

He's not super skilled but absolute competitive beast and very much will grab the game by the throat when it needs to be done. Watch the Vic Country game and watch his 1%ers and attack on the footy at important stages of the game.

I think we will do well out of these 2 picks

Young and Kemp/Stephens/Robertson

Thanks mate, this is a good insight. I wouldn't be against Robertson at pick 8.

Luke Jackson just intrigues me though. I am starting to warm to him for pick 3, especially with JT saying they are more looking at him as a key forward then ruck which now makes sense. I really feel now e is right in the frame.

That was a super interesting half hour of radio. From a dees fan's perspective it was gold. Thanks dazzler.

Fascinating stuff and so refreshing to hear to footy media people who actually know their business and have done their work and research.

A query (to you dazzler, or anyone who has view). Taylor mentioned that unusually there was couple player's he 'sat on' and that usually he goes quite 'broad'. Am i right in thinking that he means there we re couple of players that he watched more of or focused on more?

Cal Twomey responded to that comment that he did see him at a couple of school games, to which Taylor laughed and said they weren't school games. What the hell does that mean?

The bit the I found interesting was when JT mentioned more than once about Jackson showing glimpses as a forward and how Young in his bottom age year had shown glimpses and now hes a top 5 pick. Made me think that JT has seen enough of Jackson forward to project him as an AFL forward in the future.Does JT view him as a bottom ager in terms of footy experience?

Id like to know how long has Jackson been playing footy. Did he play both all the way through juniors and only concentrated on footy once he dropped basketball this year. Did he play nationals last year??. Does JT view him as a bottom ager ??

I assume Taylor usually watches a wide range of games looking at a bunch of players trying to cover the whole draft pool. With our season down the drain he knew he’d have a top pick and so had a deep dive on top prospects, watching multiple games and maybe isolating on a player and seeing their off ball work etc.

A lot of these top guys play plenty of school footy. Ie. Kemp and Serong for Geelong Grammar. Taylor would go to some of those games regardless of focus. But I think he was saying the games he took a deep dive on were likely the carnival games, WAFL/sanfl or Nab league finals. The big games where big guns step up.

Casey has often had Gippsland players as the 23rd man right? I wouldn’t be surprised if JT wanted Serong and Flanders to play for Casey. Both strong bodies and good up forward, you’d like to see them win a few clearances and make an impact forward.

Reading the player description he was of little interest to me. Then after watching the game vs Vic Country, he was the the player that impressed me the most. Despite not having the skill set we are currently lacking I would not be upset if we were to draft him. Just has something about him and was very clean around the stoppages with an amazing attack on the ball.

If you watch from the 2.50 mark you will see his attack on the ball (number 10) and he had a busted shoulder at some point in this game, not sure if it was prior to this.

Hope not never pick a kid with a dodge knee, most kids that do a knee before 18 usually do them again, gawn done a knee as a kid did it again, lever did a knee as a kid did it again.

Yeah shouldn’t have picked Gawn, what a terrible pick that has turned out to be.

He was a colt in 2018 but still playing basketball but towards end of year devoted himself to footy. He was in WA side as an underager and showed glimpses.

He's pretty good below his knees for a big man, which is always handy

Pretty much nailed it, very composed and doesn't panic in congestion almost thrives on it

I like that everyone gets something different from JT’s interview.  How cool is it that he can say so much, yet actually say nothing at all?  He throws out a few hooks, partially agrees with some of the suggestions, and gets through a whole half hour without anyone actually knowing squat.  10/10

Lets face it JT was not giving anything away and why make the other recuiters job easy by ruling out a player maybe his stratergy is to make other recuiters take Jackson so Kemp is there at 8.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
