Mahoney said during the members forum “Yes, we’re going to bring in players over time, but it’s not going to be massive changes. This list has been built over five to six years of going to the draft and adding players through the trade period and that is going to help us deliver to our ambitions. We think we’ve got enough talent to deliver what we want to as a footy club and that’s sustained success.” Young makes us a better team immediately and would be an asset with his kicking, whilst Jackson won't improve our team for a few years yet. spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Very raw ruckman from WA. No footy smarts. Basketball background. He’s no Natanui. Athletic. Absolutely. Where he can make a difference. But all AFL players are athletes. Do we need a young raw Ruckman? Probably not. We have Gawn, Preuss and development into Bradtke. Not sure if he #3 quality. A speculative punt at pick 3!!! 1 Quote

Port Demons 134 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Yes his kicking leaves a bit to be desired but his ability with follow up and win ground ball is unquestionable. Still it's a risky move at 3. Quote

Cheesy D. Pun 1,765 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 If I'm picking based on highlights, I'm taking Young but people bagging Taylor as 'stupid' or Jackson as 'worse than Lucas Cook' based on half the information the recruiters have at their disposal reeks of arrogance. 3 1 Quote
GCDee 3,202 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 I'm not keen on this pick for a few reasons... 1. I think we have greater needs than recruiting another project ruckmen with a top 5 pick 2. We just got rid of Jesse and this go home [censored], brace yourself for years to come of this if the kid shows promise... However saying the guy isn't a talent is just plain stupid. You can see in the package he has the ability to tap, follow up, rove and also has a burst of speed to get past opposing mids. It also looks like he can use both sides of the body. No other players of that size have that ability bar Grundy. I am a bit concerned there was no highlights of him clunking a mark or two in the forward 50 and slotting some set shots though... Time will tell and we will see what will happen, I would have been happy with Young at 3 and Jackson at 8 however we might get lucky to get Young at 8. 1 Quote
binman 44,843 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 The decision Taylor has to make is not on who is the best footballer now. Or even in the next 2-3 years. But who is the best over 10 years. One assumes most experts think jackson is untapped and given he has played relativey little footy and is still growing has a tonne of upside. Young gives us what we need but it is hard nor to be excited by a player who could become an out and out star. Or not. Same vibe as for buddy in his draft year. 5 Quote

He doesn't have Natanuis leap or explosiveness but I see a player with more mobility who covers more ground and can actually take contested marks on regular occasions. Contested marking will be what is attracting us I think 13 2 1 Quote

I think the bolded is what worries most on here. It's appears from us armchair experts to be a big risk. Our track record of developing draftees has been mostly miss over the past decade. I'm still in the Young camp because he appears reliable, driven and will probably make an immediate impact. Jackson on the other hand is an unknown quantity, he's still developing and has massive potential but can he develop into a KPF? will his height hamper him becoming a 1st ruck? Will he want to return to WA down the track? Quote

Will he want to return to WA down the track? All very valid questions. The club has a big call. Two other factors are relevant I reckon. The most important of those is that really, really good bigs are very hard to find. The draft is stacked with good flankers (could be rhyming slang?) and mids. So perhaps we get ash instead of young. But we won't get another jackson. The second factor is more speculation on my part. I wonder, given his athletisim, whether jackson might actually be played as a mid (ie with gawn still rucking). Say rotating wirh petracca. Would be formidable I would have thought. 5 Quote

Don't take this as a slight on Weid, I think he'll be a player for us, but it was passed on to me that a few former Dees think Jackson would be a very good chance of starting ahead of Weid round 1 next year. They're not recruiters obviously, but have played the game at the highest level so I'd give it some kind of weight. 4 Quote

Taylor has said a few times that he's seen him play forward and was excited by that, this is something that's been completely ignored by most on here who see him as mostly a ruckman. I know some clubs think it's possible that he'll potentially develop into a super tall mid as well. 3 Quote

I don’t people are ignoring the possibility, a few posters have asked the question of is there any footage of him playing forward and having shots on goal. 1 Quote

Unfortunately Bombay, there are a heap who've gone early on the criticism of Taylor/Goodwin for looking at a 'ruckman' who's going to be worse than Lucas Cook and can only kick floaters. I'd love to see some vision as well, I was just pointing out the Taylor has expressly said he's gone to see him play forward on a few occasions and doesn't see him as just a ruck, 2 Quote

Nah the criticism of Weid is warranted, he was terrible last year and I was a big fan however he would want to show some form and consistency this year, age is on his side though. It would be nice to see a bit more footage of Jackson up forward. 5 minutes ago, Red and Blue realist said: Taylor has said a few times that he's seen him play forward and was excited by that, this is something that's been completely ignored by most on here who see him as mostly a ruckman. I don't want to pick up a "ruck" at pick 3. Gawn dominates in the ruck and around the ground and we still get smashed in the middle. The only issue I have re KPF is I haven't seen much footage of him clunking marks and nailing goals? Surely if there was a bit of that footage around it would be pumped out by now? I guess it's this kind of unknown that doesn't sit well with me. 2 Quote
