general feeling:
pick 1 and 2 - rowell and anderson (gc17)
pick 3-5 - green (gw$, cos someone will nominate him out of us, crows, and swans)
pick 4 - jackson (dees)
pick 5 - flanders (crows)
pick 6 - ash / young / kemp / serong (swans)
pick 7 - robertson (dockers)
pick 8 - traded or ash / young / kemp / serong / weightman (dees)

Jackson won’t get to pick 8 apparently

I'm not buying it, surely where not actually considering taking a prospective ruckman/forward....

Does not make sense at all.

On top of Jackson being a bolter, Taylor has a poor record with drafting talls. He’s good at identifying mid sized players, but has been poor with talls and smalls. Here’s his track record for talls since he started with the 2014 draft.

O McDonald

Weiderman

Hulett (Delisted)

King (Delisted)

Filopovic (Delisted)

T Smith (Delisted)

Keilty (Delisted)

Petty

Other than Weideman (who could still be a player), all of the listed players were drafted 3rd Round or lower. You can hardly expect to hit on a KPP taken with a low pick - with the exception of ruckman, good talls are overwhelmingly drafted early.

We should consult Prendergast and do the opposite to what he says.

Ran into him in a cafe this morning and can confirm he believes Luke Molan is slightly better value at pick 3 this year than Jackson.

We are considering taking the player we think will provide the most value over the next 10-15 years. Positional needs have no bearing

Fair enough, and so we should.

But would in particular stands about him, besides his "athletism".

Most of us have no idea obviously, unless they can say they've followed them through out the year and even the previous to gauge development.

This is such a bizzare time of year.

Athleticism - tick
Ball winning - tick - he's not all potential, he was the 2nd best player in the national champs
Skills - hand ball looks good, tackling, marking needs work, kicking not as bad as people are saying

But the big one is character that always plays a huge part, if they think he is really coachable and can develop as well as be a leader then that might get him over the line.

He’s a real talent, and it’s very likely that he will be a great AFL ruckman.

But, is he what we need and/or is he best available at pick 3?

That I’m not sure of.

From that footage, I didn't see any of the dire disposal by foot everyone's been talking about.  Looks an impressive player.

Because they haven't seen him properly play. He's a right footer, but he also uses his left foot to get himself out of trouble around stoppage. He is a whole different breed of a ruckman.

His upside is scary.

I'm sold, is there a strong go home factor though?

We might draft both the WA boys in Jackson and Robertson. The Dees have been heavily linked to both, It could reduce the go home factor being drafted together... much like Anderson and Rowell.

I like this idea but I'm sure Freo having that pick before us would take either one available.

Oliver was once a bolter and he turned out to be a great player. However I don't think the Dees need another ruckman, considering we have a project ruckman in Bradke. I am leaning towards Kemp at pick 8 , not sure on pick 3.

Another way of saying he has huge potential.

I hate the 'p' word. A fancy way of saying what could be and not what is.

We have had very few success stories recently with regards to developing that potential into actual talent. Jackson is far too raw for my liking.

A reminder for about the 100th time in this thread that Jackson was 2nd in the Larke medal count, so whilst he has a long way to go to play excellent AFL footy he's not all potential when it comes to games against the best players his age.

We've also drafted a lot of players who had excellent starts to their careers and then have faltered, regressed or failed to reach their potential. Angus Brayshaw was pick 3 and had a great debut year and whilst he was very good in 2018 I think the jury is well and truly out on whether he'll be a talent or just a guy for the rest of his career.

Meanwhile someone like Fritsch was left out of TAC teams and came through local and VFL footy and I hope will be a big success.

Cale Morton is also a former Larke medallist, as is Josh Shache, David Swallow and Andrew Hooper.

Means squat in terms of making the grade in the AFL.

Then watch The Eagles and Dockers offer him the world in 2 years to go home, if he is any good.

Great... then we get two top ten draft picks in a few years time... happy with that.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
