We're elite in that stat.

Nope.  Papley + later first rounder for 3.

If Kelly is worth 2 top 10’s

Langdon is worth about 22

Papley is closer to Langdon than Kelly

I love how we decide what we will give, when we aren't even being mentioned as in the race.

this ?

Not sure if he's officially nominated Carlton but when a player wants to get somewhere he pretty much always gets there especially if interest is mutual.

Maybe we should wait until we're in a conversation to sign/trade for a player before all the hypothetical's? Maybe thats a silly thought.

Side note: The Jamie Elliot thread got to almost 2000 posts to no avail...

He’s kicked 120 goals in 4 seasons after being taken as a rookie and will only get better.

We have a serious lack of small forwards and one of the worst forward lines in the game. I think Papley would address our deficiencies very well.

Possibly, Papley may be capable of: (1) form and consistency improvements, and (2) changing the effectiveness of our goal-scoring and forward line in general. However, what is there to say about the young 'uns that we attracted last year - a swathe of smalls each attracting comments to indicate goal-scoring aptitudes - and of these new players, surely we must have some confidence in their improvements for 2020 and beyond, and start working (developing) them into training regimens for such an outcome prior to the season beginning. A great forward is for pick 3, not for a small.

Also getting rejected for that sort of money is such a Norf game thing to do.

At least when we pay overs the players come to us.  :P

the theory goes that the sooner north melbourne make a big money offer for you, the sooner you are to re-sign with yr original club

will papley stay at the swans rather than head to north melbourne?

If I was a player looking to bump up my salary I would tell my manager to speak with Norf. They'll offer ridiculous money which you then take back to your club and say 'see what I am worth?'

Kind of like what Elliott did to us.......

The article was written a few weeks ago.  Is North's offer still on the table?

They need a bit of coin to pay Keath and Bruce that they have effectively committed to.  They even made Keath cancel his overseas holiday and into surgery.  There are no highly paid Roos leaving so can't see them getting Papley.

Edit:  See Drysdale Demon post below.  I have the wrong club.  Keath and Bruce are on their way to the Dogs.

The 5-10 position is irrelevancy. Only going deep in finals makes you relevant.

That's not right when you are one of the also rans such as ourselves, Bulldogs Saints etc. It's all about giving your supporters both a competitive team and some hope. Whatever you may say North have done that very well over the last twenty odd years.

I think most of us on this board would be quite happy to have North's record rather than our own

Keath and Bruce are supposedly going to the dogs

Thanks.  So they are.  My research is slipping!

must say I wondered the same thing but at the very least it gave some context to what he will be asking for and one can assume that it is in the ballpark of what the Blues are offering.

If they officially nominate someone they usually get there.

There is no point swapping 3 for Papley, when we can get Sarong.

I understand that the top 2 of this years draft is head and shoulders above the rest, but there would be a few more names i'd be calling out before Serong's at this stage D11.

This is not the case.  Serong and Young have massive upside.

They will be just as good if not better than the top 2

I think we should tease and drag it out, then reject the offer and take pick 3 to the draft.

The though of it going to bombers via syd makes me a bit ill... (unless it’s an absolute ripping deal).

Is that a guarantee?

Well of course but there are no guarantees on a trader in player.

Thats the beauty of the draft, the player we pick could be our greatest ever.  You just never know.

Papley would be great, but haven't we already ruled him out as he is asking for, or is on, too much coin?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
