I'll let everyone else argue the point, but I'm already heading in to next year with a modicum of optimism.

I won't convince those on the opposite side to think otherwise, but to those who do, then I'm with you all the way.  Even if there is only one other person in that group.

Bring on the review, bring on the tough decisions and bring on finals in 2020.

Book it.

We played terribly for most of the season but still lost 7 games by 19 points or less.  We could bounce back quickly but a lot needs to go right, starting tomorrow with the exit interviews.

Devil's advocate: we led in the last quarter in 11 games in 2014. End of the day we lost and our % was pretty average.

Finals far from a guarantee and we are more likely to miss than make it. A lot of work required.

C'mon, big fella.  Do the right thing and back us in.  It won't hurt you too much to do it!

This might be obvious, but every other team will be looking to improve in 2020. To make the finals, at least one of this year's top 8 would have to drop out and we'd have to improve more than 8 other clubs. Big job.

Not really the competition is so even, no real standout teams. Next year Brisbane will be up there, Richmond likely again, West coast generally do well enough to make finals but the rest are all just as likely to miss as make it.

I remember the Daniher years
We could make the finals.
But we'd only be making up the numbers.
Not enough class and too mentally weak to get the job done.
And the job is winning flags, not just making finals.

For us to make finals we need the following:

- Majority of our whole list to have injury free pre seasons.

-  The Tom McDonald form of 2018

- Jake Lever and Steven May to play 22 games.

- Petracca to play big midfield minutes

- McDonald, Weideman, Melksham and Fritsch to all finally play together in the forward line.

- Oliver, Brayshaw, Harmes to take their game to another level. They're the key to our midfield.

- Pick 2 to make a Jesse Hogan/Jayden Stephenson first year impact.

It absolutely can happen. But we need a lot of things to get right.

What's the "opposite side"? Everyone wants the Demons to do well.

Perhaps if the club apply a bit of George Constanza logic and do the absolute opposite of everything they did in 2019 , every instinct that comes to mind , then do the opposite ... for example , when they get the urge in November to use pick 3 to draft a promising inside mid ....  then don’t just draft some outside mid with speed ,

Another example , when Goody thinks it’s a good idea to continue with the current leadership group and keep plugging away at getting better with that connection thingy to make ourselves more accountable  .... no , no , back up.... let’s change things up a little , let’s make Gawn sole captain and spend most of the summer doing kicking drills , and let’s see how that turns out

So if we do the opposite, we make finals, and I suppose it’s an even year too , which helps !

Simples !

And making finals in 2020 is supposed to be an achievemen?

Winning a final is the minimum to claim we have improved and show that 2018 wasn't an aberration.  It is the minimum for fans, sponsors, FTA time slots, fixtures etc etc.

Anything less than winning a final and we will be a financial basket case again.  And we can kiss good-bye to our own club facilities.

Winning the big one is all I'm interested in.

Let's be honest, the happy-go-luckies will host a jamboree of we finish 16th next year.

Because that's what we have done this year?

Righto.

All I said is that we will make finals. That's it. You can draw your own conclusions from that.

Righto.

Obviously not this year.

But next year, finishing anything above 17th will be a 'positive'.

It's upsetting that I needed to explain that.

To dazzledavey36's prescription.

This would guarantee a good year. All things are possible. A better game plan would lock it in.

2020

Go dees.

Making finals is a low bar.  You might be satisfied to simply make finals.  Most won't.

And, the club cannot afford to simply 'make finals'.

Well, my expectation is to win a final and anything less will be a failure by the club.  And the off-field staff changes that are to happen will also have failed.

Ahh, but you see, we've twisted the system and have created an opening here. Every club was looking to improve in 2019, but we broke with convention.

Now, everyone else has to try to improve all over again, while all we have to do is look to get back to where we already were!

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
