Fair call @dazzledavey36. Like so many Vic kids this year,  Kobi didn’t get on the park this year. I saw him in a game in 2019 for the Stingrays and he has an excellent sidestep, skilled left foot disposal and moved at pace with ease. I was optimistic which is something as Dees fans that we have to hold onto. I think he’d be one to put on at Casey in the squad or hopefully play for Stingrays as a 19yo in 2021.  Will Bravo was another kid out of the Stingrays that showed real pace and goal sense.  He’s another that might go late/rookie or be in the Casey/Stingrays group for 2021.

afl.com.au reporting we are likely to invite smith to train on with us for that last spot on our rookie list. i wonder what the rules are on them training on and then joining as a B rookie as they were technically academy players despite not being nominated. if that's the case could we see Smith and Farmer both invited and both given a chance one as an A rookie and one as a B

"Melbourne has two spots open and may add Next Generation Academy prospect Deakyn Smith to its training squad from January."

Hard to know if afl.com.au have actually heard anything or they're just speculating...

Deakyn Smith | Outside Midfielder/Forward
22/08/2002 | 179cm/68kg

Part of Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy, Smith is a lightly-framed outside midfielder who can also rotate forward. He has good speed and plenty of raw talent, but is working on adding polish and consistency to his overall game.

Smith and Laurie are mates, so it'll be interesting to see if we pick up Smith.

I hope we do. He can be a category B rookie can't he or has that already past?

Not sure.

As mentioned in the Jason Taylor interview, Deakyn has been invited to train with us over the summer.

I'll be very shocked if he ends up on an AFL list.

Good on the kid for securing a training gig, but jesus he would want to show massive improvement from when I watched him last year.

clubs dont often offer train on spots without following through especially with 2 spots open and u can basically pay the players entire wage outside the cap and u may as well fill out the list if u can cant hurt really as a development player on a 1yr deal.

makes me laugh when people on here have an issue with mbrown getting a year when he's 30 as depth coz they wanna see an unproven youngster with upside get a chance and then we hear about a youngster getting a chance and its godforbid we give him a go.

No point giving him a go unless we think he will make it though.

With covid financial impacts our resources are limited. No point taking up a coach, physio or other for a player we think is a really long shot and only given a chance due to being tied through our academy

Daw and Smith get rookie spots.

Farmer and Declase don't.

Deakyn Smith - had a good game for Casey yesterday playing back pocket, he's smart player, good disposal and courageous, I think we have found a good player, reminds me of Richmond's Baker

Great addition to the young depth

Much better player than Kobe Farmer

Is he a lockdown type defender?    We are desperate for a Jetta replacement

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
