How do we know GC won't take Anderson?

Rowell is a smaller Gus.

I reckon they'll feel Rowell is a somewhat safer option.

So what's the goss. Are the AFL going to give GCS PP1 at #2 or is Anderson a chance? I'd love to get King.

gc17 will be gifted every advantage imaginable

What would you trade to bring him in? Would we trade pick 3 for him? A 2020 1st round pick?

You can be guaranteed what ever the FD end up doing will be short sighted and with the hindsight of history will end up being the opposite of what we should have done aka the Dom Tyson Josh Kelly  maneuver.

If the AFL let this kid walk away from GC they should close up shop on the Sunshine coast. What a disgrace.

(mind you it would be some nice justice for the whole $cully era drama if he came to us).

The kid can play.

I'd be happy to give up our first rounder (even if it is Anderson) for him. He's a kid who is displaying unbelievable potential.

We shouldn't kid ourselves, Hogan out was a massive blow. King in would go a long way to alleviating that (even if he takes a few more years to really get going).

Potential, you say?

That sounds like something we can help him fail to deliver on!

If Anderson's as good as some say he is, I wouldn't be disappointed to land him, but getting King would really straighten us up.

We already have a dominant Gawn feeding to the likes of Oliver, Harmes, Brayshaw, Viney, Petracca and even Salem.

If we added King to McDonald, Melksham, Hannan, Fritsch, Petracca and a speedy natural crumber, we'd start to have a potent list of forward options.

Then all we need to a game style that enables connection between midfield and forward.

I just hope we don’t [censored] it up and trade players out that we need and get ones in that won’t help our cause.

I’d prefer we take Anderson and persevere with Weed for now.

Agreed. Imo we need quality through the midfield more than a kpf. Our midfield is seriously overrated

I am leaning towards King, if we could get him which I doubt, as it would basically solve the key forward area with Tom.Mac, Weid and Petty and then Trac, Melk and Fritter as the mid size forwards.

That would mean we could concentrate on getting pace and small goal kicking forwards, with our other draft picks and trades.

A deal for Langdon would help the pace off the back flank and we could really concentrate on trading/drafting outside run and a couple of young Jeffy's.

IMO Jeffy is gone and Jetta is slow and nearly gone.

Ugh, this topic is making me mildly ill, just thinking about how impossible it is to assess list needs when every part of your list is so far away from what might be their realistic form.

If McDonald/Weideman 2018 is the 'normal', then Anderson for sure. If Mcdonald/Weideman 2019 is normal then absolutely go after King.

Same thoughts in reverse for 'if Brayshaw/Oliver/Viney' best vs worst.

And defence, are we going to write down the value of our two big defender trades and go for yet another (such as the frankly worrying Keath rumours?), or plan for the better result of Lever & May getting preseasons and some form and structure together? Are Michael Hibberd and Neville Jetta still top-quality defenders who have had poor run lately, or are they both sliding towards retirement at barely 30?

It even makes the later draft selections a challenge - what do we make of the likes of Hunt, Hannan, Kolodjashnij, Vandenberg, Nibbler, Smith, the Wagners and even Lockhart? All of them and more are hugely variable prospects, whether by injury issues or the sheer fluctuation from 'frustrating but useful roleplayers' right to pointless list-clogging depending on which season, moment or mood your happen to observe them.

I do not envy Jason Taylor as he tries to organise a draft strategy out of this mess.

I was the one who initiated the Ben King thought train back in the trade+draft thread.

I still think if we lose Anderson, aka pick 2 gets pushed back to pick 3 due to GC gaining a PP st start of first round, then we attempt to trade pick 3 directly for King. We’d get a decade out of him as a quality KPF. It’s fill one of our biggest holes.

I’m hearing whispers Ben King will seek a trade back to Victoria and if he doesn’t, he’ll be staying put. You heard it here first. #ETthetradebreaker #Ihearwhispers.

Thanks for clearing that up?

Michael Warner just said saints heavily into Ben King.

He's a bit late on that news 'dazzle'...

...but seriously the Saints have been into him since he was drafted & probably before.

Too bad we have a pick that trumps theirs :(

Everyone forgetting about Petty's impact, He's going to be a great forward, why do we need a to use a pick on a forward? we need small forwards and midfield pace.

We shouldn’t be Trading Pick 2.

Pick 3 Yes or Yes to 2020 first rounder and player.

Needs to work on his goal kicking from the 40 metre plus range if he's to make it as a forward.

Can certainly take a contested mark though which is a great sign.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
