Well, I do know for an absolute fact that we did not submit any offers for Dustin, Kelly, DeGoey & Coniglio.  The only player from all that list that we spoke to his manager about was Kelly.

As I reported a year or so back, All Clubs were told that Kelly was only interested in considering 3 clubs. GWS, Carlton & Kangas. He re-signed with GWS.

They might, however, on balance they have already a better one in Tarrant. Great player, great bloke, great clubman.  Plays every week, no fuss.

My point is that I used the Kangas to demonstrate a club that has really managed their TPP far better than what I believe the Dees have.

They’ve owned us for 10 years but have had a real crack at the superstars of our game and came within a bees [censored] of landing Dustin Martin.

So they say.

Loose lips.

Just because we didn't submit an offer, Damien, does not mean we didn't ask the question.  We may have rung, got told of either their lack of interest, or what the terms would be, and went from there.

Damn it... I wish we were good enough to nearly land Dusty.

Why would we pay a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract for someone like Martin, who would throw our cap out, and make it difficult to keep the likes of Oliver and Brayshaw?

Whereas, the Kelly approach would make sense, since his ball use and pace is exactly what our midfield needs. Sometimes to fill a specific need that compliments the rest of the list, you need to pay overs.

That all sounds like smart list management and strategy to me.

The offers from North to Martin and co has desperation written all over them.

I'm glad you're not in charge of list management. You'd have us sunk in 3 years.

Rubbish. Kangas shot for the stars and they missed going for the absolute best in the industry. My point was, despite massively outperforming MFC for the last 10 years, they had the Salary Cap to have a real crack at Kelly, De Goey & Martin.  MFC couldn’t.

FCS, don’t crow about recruiting a 3rd tall defender that had knee reconstruction history on enormous money and over paid with draft picks. Plus a fat, unfit May who we once again were the ONLY club in the picture because we had the very low Pick 6 and we were willing to pay him Hogan’s money which was far more than anyone else was willing to do.

Bottom line Kangas have recruited Higgins, Polec, Pittard over recent years, all players with pace and dash that walk into the Dees.

Higgins has been at north for 5 seasons already. Hardly recent.

Pittard is a turnover merchant, would have us all pulling our hair out. He’s barely afl standard.

Polec is a good player. That’s it.

Last night backed up my earlier impressions of him. He is just a bit part player, doesn’t really influence the game, but is tidy enough and can plug a variety of holes. I’m still not convinced he will add much to the side tbh, and also unsure what role we primarily have in mind for him.

Last night was easily his worst game for the season.

His best position is on a wing where his running capacity and marking are a feature. It has been stated by many that this is where he will most likely play with a faster type like Langdon occupying the other wing.

Do you understand the math... the highest paid players are in the 26 to 28 year old bracket.

We don't have any high performers in that bracket other than Gawn so of course we are managing our cap well.

If Oliver, Brayshaw and Petracca go A grade and hit 25 plus say Salem at A-  tell me how good we are then.

Anyway the fact remains that at 500k and above he is in the top one third salary wise of the league. Does he deserve that.

If you just want to say the "club know best" all the time why do you bother commenting.

You've already conceded you don't know the structure of contracts so even if he is on $2M over 4 years, he might be heavily front loaded and getting $200k in the 4th year when we need the cap space.  Do those maths.

Submitting offers and being told not to bother are two different things.

Makes the AFL FA a joke really. Good ol AFL integrity.

When was Hinkley sacked?

#checkfacts

For the record, Polec and Pittard have been very good recruits for North, especially for the relatively low cost:  The Kangaroos have sent Pick 11 and a future fourth-round selection to the Power in exchange for Jared Polec and Jasper Pittard, along with Pick 48.

It was shrewd play of their pick #11 as it enabled them to get their New Gen Academy player, Tarryn Thomas, for a handful of later picks.  Thomas was called at pick #8 which North matched.

So for pick #11 =/- later picks North got Thomas, Polec and Pittard.  On balance that is a better 'package' than anything we have put together.

Edit:  Thanks to @Salems Lot for correction of the first two lines and apology to Wiseblood for the hashtag...just having first coffee for the day.

Nonetheless, its not their fault Scott left and the rest of my post is valid which was to address negative comments about North's trading.

I think he is referring to Brad Scott

Dusty and his management used the Kangas as leverage to get the best possible deal from Rich.

There was no way in the world he would have gone to the Kangas, their list shape they were in and still are is abhorrent.

Wreaked of desperation at the time and still does. They are nowhere near a Premiership, they are just a top up club with no significant list plan.

Pretty sure they got rid of their list manager this year too who followed Brad Scott out the door.

No worries LH.  I was being a bit facetious with that line as, of course, it wasn't all their fault.  But they were recruited to push North into finals contention and it didn't happen.

As a side note, I wouldn't say no to having Polec on a wing.

Saints appear to have lost interest.

"Melbourne appears to be leading the race to acquire Tomlinson, with St Kilda linked to him again, although the Saints have other things in play right now".

I think it's more to do with the money/trade for Hill, Ryder, Zac Jones, etc is the reason they've cooled. They're targeting everyone, and only latching onto the ones that bite their line.

Also, it doesn't say they've lost interest, only that their focus is elsewhere (ie. Focusing on the Hill trade).

If we paid $800k a year for Polec this place would go into meltdown

They've lost interest because he has decided to come to us.

I suspect that these days deals are by in large locked in well before the trade period begins so little value in staying in a race you are not going to win.

Sure staying in the race might drive up the price another club has to pay but what comes around goes around and whilst the player managers love to play that game i doubt the clubs do.

At the moment it seems that if Wayne Carey was in his prime and wanting to join Melbourne that most of the board would go into meltdown about paying him 800k a year.

Lost interest on the back of his performance on Saturday night?

Sure why not. Coz that's how professional recruiting teams roll.

The assumption that any potential recruit would be evaluated off of 1 game is almost laughable, and I say almost because i couldn't fathom how stupid a recruiting team would have to be if they did so. The fact that some here have based their decision to recruit Tomlinson on Saturday's game, and haven't seen his last 80 games for GWS, is idiotic. Sure, he's no world beater, but he's a damn good pick up for the price we'll be paying him. Him and Langdon on the wings? We've been screaming out for something like it all season!

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
