He wasn't the only one that missed a sitter in the first quarter, but for a player that has played over 300 games, how did Lewis not realise you needed to kick at the left goal post?

Not only is this a personnel problem (baffling, as under 12s ask which way is the wind going when they take to the field), it is a coaching problem too.

Our poor kicking in the first quarter, when we controlled the play, lost us the game. As simple as that.

Not a great game by the big fella but he cost us a player who can’t make the North side either.

Oh i actually think Preuss is a fantastic get for us. I just think he should be playing at Casey. I can accept we need him playing right now because we have no key forwards, but if Weid is fit next week I'd have him back at Casey continuing to learn to be a ruckman, not a forward.

Possibly our best 3 games for the year are  Eagles X2, Crows and we fall agonisingly short. Liked the fightback from 30 odd down, used it smartly forward of centre most times but once again missing goals equals a lack of scoreboard pressure. Add in some errors at crucial times and good teams will find a way to punish you.

A bit left field to use Gus as a tagger on Yeo, played well i thought.

In all honesty, the next 5 weeks can’t come quick enough.

Let not kid ourselves Eagles were in second gear and just put the foot down when they had to. Being the second worse team is reality irrespective of today effort; injuries and appalling umpiring. The club is in serious trouble slow on the outside; poor skills and non existent forward line. The question is after a rebuild of years how can we be so bad. The constant reference to it will click next year is delusional. This is not just about Goodwin but the systemic issues at the club such as years of failure; lack of quality facilities; poor recruiting and an invisible board. Losing Roos and Jackson has been catastrophic. Beyond Goodwin it is impossible to have any optimism I truly believe next year maybe even worse

So Glouftis was dropped in May this year following a string of poor decisions, including two crucial errors in the St Kilda v WEST COAST clash which resulted in two goals to the EAGLES.

In 2017 Donlon gave a controversial decision when he awarded a free kick to Luke Shuey which then saw him kick the winning goal for the EAGLES after the siren against Port. The following week he wasn't given any finals games despite being an experienced umpire of over 200 games officiated.

These are the umpires which are sent to officiate the Alice game. Thanks a lot AFL. No quality for a team like the lowly Melbourne.

It’s well known that the poorer umpires get the least popular time slots (such as Sunday). Get used to it, because we’ll get a heap of Sunday games next year and we’ll be lucky to get one Friday night.

An absolute plodding game by Lockhart today.

Could not believe how slow he was. Not just straight mine speed, but a bloke that size should be nimble on his feet.

Lockhart played like a 170cm Garry Lyon post back injury. Beached whale.

Lockhart seems to give at least one HTB away a game. Not sure if it’s not being used to the speed still, or that he hasn’t learned to that seizure looking move players are supposed to do to make it look like they’re trying to dispose of it or what. Whatever it is, it’s bloody annoying and needs ironing out ASAP.

Late in the 3rd quarter and we had kicked 6 goals 9 behinds from set shots.

The Eagles 5 goals straight

That is the game right there.

Have been doing similar most of the year. Gifted the weagles 30 points before pulling our finger out.

We made the same mistakes as we do every week but seemed to run a bit harder.

Some decent decisions by Goodwin in terms of match ups: Lewis on McGovern, Fritsch forward, Brayshaw on Yeo

We are our own worst enemy. Its kind of pathetic actually.

Although l am gutted today for the loss l cannot heap enough praise on two brothers Josh and Corey Wagner. Josh had 21 poss and 7 marks and played his role and Corey kicked two goals with 17 poss 3 marks Both had an influence in the game and are real handy pickups for our club.

Well done boys.

We faded in the last due to fatigue but it wasn't all lack of fitness.  A lot to do with interchanges.  We had 9 players who played more than 88% game time; WCE had 3 so they had fresh legs.

We had the same no of i/changes.  The difference was Viney being out, managing Jetta's and Preuss's game time.

Fritsch played 96% so makes his game even better.  Had a poor tired kick in the last qtr but really held up well.

Happy to say it was a pleasingly unremarkable 8 kick, 8 handball, 2 tackle-game from ANB - probably our 15th best on the day :)

Today was good, issue is they are not consistent hence why they rotate in and out of the team every 2 weeks

Stand by for shittihad at 4.40 Sunday for about 5 games next year!

Renewing memberships next year a HUGE problem for MFC!

Yes I realize we mean nothing to the AFL, but I also thought wasn't it strange these two umpires made poor decisions which benefited the Eagles. Makes you wonder where their loyalties lie. Combine that with inexperience (did you notice Glouftis was the controlling umpire at one stage in the last quarter and the other umpire made a decision in favour of West Coast? Couldn't even see him in the frame of the TV coverage. How far away was he? Obviously doesn't trust her to make a decision by herself because she has only umpired a few games) and Melbourne are on the back foot every time. I'm sick of it.

Yes and no, the risk reward at half forward says take the game on and try to evade some tacklers if the reward is a clear shot on goal or spot up kick. Every circumstance will be different but there's times to take it on and see if the opposition can get you.

And a holding the ball is often a better result than spilling it out when surrounded by 3 opposition players.

The main thing I'd be teach Lockhart is when to pick it up and when to tap it on, try to draw a holding free or work the ball towards team mates. He goes hard for the ball in tricky situations a lot. Still think it's easier for fix than ANB who will run over the ball, get worked off it or pick up and rush a disposal that goes nowhere.

Yes, they’re borderline AFL - that’s what borderline AFL players are like. You’d always prefer they be held out by better players, but when picked they deserve to be given benefit of the doubt, at least until the game has actually been played, rather than mercilessly bagged by the “supporters” on Thursday night when they get named.

Field and goal kicking continues to be below AFL standard.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
