The point was to make a statement and make them better players.  Hinkley was prepared to take the risk.  They all put in exceptional games in the SANFL.  They are all match winners on their day. The success of the move can only be assessed once they are back in the team which they will be.  I suspect Port will win more games from the improvement in the dropped name players than losing the game on Sat night.  The alternative was to let them continue to play below expectations.

As to who we bring in?  I've given up on this season so I don't care who we bring in.   The goal imv is to build a team for next year.  If that means making a statement and drop Oliver or Brayshaw and we lose so be it.   Give JKH a chance to show he deserves another contract or give Dunkley a run to see how he fares at AFL level.  Nothing to lose.

I don't disagree with most of that mate, really good points. I agree there needs to be a wake up, and I think we've definitely gone backwards in terms of our culture of team selection, it's completely unbalanced from an outisders perspective. I'm just not in 100% agreement with dropping Oliver ahead of certain others (including Brayshaw & Viney, if we're talking the core midfield group), and you need to manage how you do this kind of thing as it can completely backfire. The other aspect is the destabilization after so much has happened the last few weeks.

i see Oliver was rated second best player in the comp from round 11. I know the points system can be mis-leading but it would be a travesty to drop him. Brayshaw is the one that needs re-booting and Harmes has been ok but not able to shut down players like last year. There seems to be a problem with the midfield coaching if talented players like we have cant capitalise on Maxxys dominance.

Very much agree mate. Sure, Oliver has some things to tweak in his game, but his intent and effort is there, but you can definitely question those aspects to Brayshaw's game this year. Gus just seems off, not sure if he's carrying an injury or has something happening in his personal life, but he doesn't seem himself onfield at all. Was 'dropped' last year for his training standards but somehow is escaping scrutiny this year.

Please not JKH, he will be delisted, there's no point playing him, he's had chances galore and has shown SFA. Crazy that he's stayed on an AFL list this long.

I'd really love to know. If McCartney told supporters on Thursday we'd win the next 6, what the absolute [censored] went wrong? Is Rocket Eade available for a celebrity coach gig this weekend?

The private conversation went like this.

Me "We need to win 4 in a row".

Brendan,"We will win the next 6".

Me, "Get the best out of them"

It really makes you wonder Kev, if the coaches were so confident we were back on track, what the hell went wrong?

Thanks for the info by the way. Love your reports as well.

We need to be planning for season 2020 and that begins by avoiding the temptation of playing your Lewis, Smith, Maynard, J Wagner types who should not be on the list next season.

Preuss has to come in. I don't care where he plays, we need to find out if this guy can cut it and he needs a 5-6 week stint in the 1s to give us an idea of where he fits in 2020.

JKH is in the same boat. Has been teetering on the edge of retaining/delisting for a few seasons now. His VFL form suggests one last stint before a decision is made in his future.

Bitter pill to swallow but Petty and Weid will probably get gifted more games even though their form doesn't warrant it. Lever probably gets wrapped in cotton wool so Petty has a role to play.

Also, it's time to stop rolling out guys under an injury cloud. In pains me to watch Hibbo at the moment. Never have I seen a guy in such need to rest and recovery.

Out: Smith, Hibbo (needs a few weeks to heal)

In: Preuss, JKH

Petty got thrashed last week what was it 4 goals in a quarter of footy?? Nar needs to go!

Weeds on very shaky ground

Smith ?? Deplorable

ANB Fumbles inc!

Oh and on Big Max with the season gone if they play him this week it is tantamount to negligence IMV

Give him 1-2 of at least

Ins

Pruess

JKH

Dunkley

AND WHOEVER SHOWS PROMISE FOR 2020!

preuss needs to come in regardless of whether max plays or not. if max plays he needs the backup support. i dont see why we cannot just keep one big man resting on the bench so preuss, weid, tom mc and max can rotate there. just dont have them all on the ground at the same time.  this is not just about ruck work but being able to take marks or stop the opposition ruckman from owning the ground we need to be competitive and give ourselves the best chance of getting the ball first from stoppages.

ANB is fast but does not seem to put that speed to any good use, he needs to be replaced, I would try lewis down forward, that would also give you the ability to move him back if needed, or swing Jones forward and lewis back.  Hannan was not great swap him for JHK, he seems to have earned a chance, he looks to have the good at times but often stuffs up by kicking the ball too low and turning it over. he is worth a shot up forward.

Dump on me for this but reading between the lines of Gawn's injury I'd say rest him. He is too valuable long term to mess about with. They hope the swelling goes down in time because it's a seven day turnaround? No thanks. Preuss deserves a run and was by reports in decent form the past few weeks. He looked OK in Sydney but ran out of steam. His fitness must have improved. Give him a go and let's see what he has.The midfield was rubbish last week with Gawn so let's put the challenge on them to do the job without Max as a crutch.

So Preuss in for Gawn.

JKH also apparently was dynamite at Casey. Well, against expectations he was pretty handy late last year and was unlucky to cop an injury just when he was starting to look like he belonged so

JKH in for ANB who had little impact.

No other changes needed. Some pride required.

Rest Gawn. There is no miracle cure or treatment for that amount of ankle-turn. So what if the swelling goes down? The ligaments and tendons have been weakened and will continue to require RICE before further stresses.

Any half-witted opposition midfielder would know that Max is going to win the tap and two of them makes a normal brain - so they rove to Maxy themselves - and our blokes allow this to happen around 50% of the time. When ours win possession, they bomb to take the heat off themselves - the effectiveness of the clearance is irrelevant to them.

It would be friggin' stupid to play Max.

Sorry, it got caught up in an overlapped post with other contributors; that is where I found the blurb that I wished to comment upon. It went up like lightning - surprised me, too. Apologies, again.

Any chance Pedersen may be available?

Had a good chat to Pedo on the long weekend minutes after the Phillip island vs Cora Lynn blockbuster finished in a draw. He was BOG alongside the CL full forward. Played Ruck all day for PI. Lovely guy.

Lever playing VFL this week, so what will the changes be?

Do we think Casboult will play fwd? They'll have a very small fwd line if not.

Makes me think we'll bring in either J.Wags or Lewis for Petty. Purely because of match ups.

What does everyone else think?

Playing Gawn would be the most mind-bogglingly stupid decision we've made this year.

And that's saying a lot as there have been more than a couple.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest .. It'll be the Joel Smith 2.0 decision. The club has had an uncanny way of shooting itself in the foot this season.

Gawn still in doubt. https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-07-04/star-demon-still-in-doubt-as-final-fitness-test-looms Ankle still very swollen.  Will be tested again on Saturday.

Lever will play VFL.  Goodwin:  "We just want to ease him back into it."  Should have done that a month ago rather than bring him into AFL on barely a full game in over a year.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
