So were Scully and Trengove. Before the draft. Both turned out to be "good ordinary" players for various reasons.

Im happy to trade for a known quantity because our so called window just narrowed like a clogged artery.

Think of the trade as a footballing Stent.

Going back to drafting young kids en-mass is a Bypass (rebuild)

Yes im desperate for a premiership before i die.

If GC get a priority pick and we go back to 3 then I reckon 3 + 2020 2nd for pick 8, Hill & Langdon would be around the mark.

so who is available and looking like picks 3 to 7 if Anderson and Rowell are stand outs

The value of the pick is always relative to the depth of the pool.

Last year there were 7 standouts who, as individuals, could have viably occupied top 5 spots in most draft pools.

This year there are 2 in Rowell and Anderson, which makes 1 & 2 more valuable than usual (and not necessarily reflected in draft points calculated value alone).

The next group is starts with Hayden Young (who is not far off to being up there with Rowell and Anderson). In the scenario where GC chose Anderson first and we still held pick 2, I’d select Young over Rowell, as he’d be an excellent fit for us. Reminds me of Heppell at the same age, but his kick may have greater penetration. Has super vision and executes under pressure as well.

After Young, there is Lachie Ash, Dylan Stephens (both with pace and good kicking skills, so also reasonable fits for us), Tom Green (GWS Academy), Kemp and Luke Jackson. There are others on the fringe of top 10 calibre, but potentially you have 8 or so identifiable top 10 quality talents (and being a ruckman, Jackson won’t go that high, but Serong probably will). Once you get to pick 8 you have variable quality, and I reckon comparitive first round quality goes to about pick 16 (this includes highly rated guys like Dylan Williams and Cameron Taheny whose stock took a hit after poor Championships).

2nd round quality runs to about 31 (short of our third round selection, 38 at this stage).

Given our 2nd rd pick is close to a first round selection (may be inside pick 20 after Tom Green bids are in), I’d package that along with our third (or next year’s second) to get a late first round pick to send to Freo for Hill.

Hello Chaser, hope you are well

The Eagles are very keen on Jackson as are Freo (keep an eye on Darcy being involved in a Kelly trade)

I really liked what I seen of Kent before he did the knee,  I see a lot of upside with him and professional environment could see massive development.

What's your thoughts on him

G’day mate,

I am very well, hope you are too.

Both WA teams would make a lot of sense as far as Jackson goes, will be interesting to see what maneouvres will be made to secure him. Probably the best rounded ruck prospect to come through since Grundy.

Was a big fan of what Kemp did in the Champs, particularly the last couple of games. His midfield game flashed a bit of Paddy Cripps, and his impact in the forward line pushed him up. He’s a true utility, i’m not sure where (or whether) he settles down in one area of the ground.

The only qualifier when trying to project how that translates into senior footy is that this crop overall is short on quality tall players (across the ground).  Kemp had a bit of a size advantage in all areas of the ground, and he used it well.  He won’t have the same advantage at senior level. He can’t do much about the size of his immediate competition at this level, although that qualifier works both ways. If I was picking between him and a comparable player (eg Sam Flanders), I’m picking Kemp because he has that size. His talent should translate, but would have been great to see a bit more of him post champs.

Given the balance of our list is currently skewed toward bigger bodied mids, I’d choose a few others ahead of him, but he’d be a great fit for almost every other club.

Have you seen much of Elijah Taylor?

I've only seen bits and pieces of Taylor outside of the Champs and I really like him, I think he's better than Henry and has more Xfactor. He will really develop well in the full time environment.

He's not really been part of the ststem here long, but he's good size, creates a match up issue as he is a threat in the air and good at ground level. He has speed but IMO his acceleration and evasiveness in close gives him more upside to Henry

Hi all, I'm back.

Thankfully there is at least one person with a sane head at the MFC and we will be pursuing Brad Hill with vigor.

Your personal insults don’t bother me so I don’t care if you’re banned or not, do your best.

That said. You haven’t actually provided an opinion on Hill’s value or anything about how he plays.

800k a season and a future first round pick that reasonable could be picks 7-12, might be higher or lower but that’s my guess, no thanks. He’ll be elite for <4 years, it’s too much for 80 games on the wing.

2 of the other top 5 wingmen right now: Ricky Henderson and Mitch Robinson. Both came free of charge.

We’re like a team with no ruck going all out at maximum price. Richmond had no ruck - got Nankervis for stuff all.

I support the May trade because gun key defenders are very hard to find. Meanwhile every team and every draft is full of guys who can get the job done on the wing.

When the Hawks turned their list around in 2009-2012 they made one big item deal for Burgoyne. A superstar. Then they found value with Gunston, Gibson, Lake and eventually got Frawley for free.

They got Tom Mitchell for a great price, that helped them. Paying overs for O’Meara and Wingard hasn’t.

Agree, his combination of traits and size (185cms) appeals, as an overall package, more to me than Henry. I think he has the highest upside in the pool.

A trade for someone who isn't over the HILL ?

Why would Brad Hill want to come to the Dees......Just looked at his stats & averages 5.2 turnovers a game, 5 contested possessions & 2 tackles per game...... Goody & Macca won't like that!

Serious under 18 guns and that’s all.

Josh Kelly is a star but Salem has been brilliant this year and will be even better when we improve.  We also got Hunt in this deal, so it’s not as bad as everyone says.

Excellent summary really apprecciate as I am sure others on here also

We’re rated as 16th for talent under 23, no way we give up pick 2 in a trade to get Hill. We need to retain 2 to have the best chance at getting Anderson. Hill’s worth an early second rounder.

I think we strategically leaked interest in Hill to have all parties think about Melb as an option, without us putting fwd a hard commitment, b/c we're only interested if it's the right price all round, including Hill wanting to come, salary and trade price.

In a subjective list compiled by AFL writers. Not really a reliable assessment of our list, and if you look at our players aged 23-25 it's a very different scenario. I agree pick 2 for Hill is not a fair deal, but there's no way we get him for a 2nd round pick either. I don't see us getting him anyways tbh.

I'm no good at the drafting, trading macinations. But fir a number of reasons we need to go to the draft with pick 2.

Firstly we simply must draft in a player with elite foot skills.

Secondly we have to take this opportunity to get young high end talent to the club. I'm hopeful this  will be the last draft for some time where we'll get a top 10 pick.

Thirdly,  getting pick 2 would be some small consolation for the pain the club has suffered this year.

All that said we still need hill (or martin) And it sounds as if we have Langdon. I leave it up to the dl's resident draft and trading gurus to work out how we manage keeping pick 2 and getting hill or martin and Langdon. Oh and Greenwood too if possible please.

Agreed, P2 should have nothing to do will Hill.

Freo paid P26 for Hill 2 years ago, his value will have only gone down or stayed the same given he is now older.

P20 sounds pretty fair to me for Hill...

On trading pick 2 , I don’t think anyone is suggesting we trade pick 2 straight up for Brad Hill.

The question would be whether we trade pick 2 for Hill AND Freo’s first. Currently that’s pick 7, and i could see it dropping to pick 6.

With a bit of horse trading it’s not impossible to see Langdon included in the deal. Should we be exploring whether we could walk away from this trade draft period with Hill, Langdon as well as someone like Dylan Stephens (Ash or Serong are possibles here too)? We could deal with our (glaring) immediate needs and get a first round talent in one deal.

A lot of the commentary around pick 2 is predicated on Anderson being the player available at 2, but I would not be surprised (assuming that GC aren’t gifted a priority pick at the start of the 1st round), if GC went with Anderson at pick 1. Rowell may have a few more runs on the board, but Anderson is 10 cm’s taller and can play in other areas of the ground. If I’m picking first, I’m leaning toward Anderson.

What if it wasn’t Anderson, but Rowell we were talking about being the player available at pick 2? Would we want to pick the pure inside midfielder if we held pick 2?

1964 was too long ago,  87 and 2000, were disasters, much like 2019 but we did not go on.    The players should all get in a line and kick the bloke in front a fair dinkum KUTA. and I think the coach should be in the front of the line.

10 goals down Saturday I think   but WTF   Go Dees !!!

Spoke to some mates who support Fremantle and they think Hill is worth a second round pick, somewhere around 25-35. They all had a good chuckle at the suggestion of pick 2 for Hill and pick 7.

Scratching my head trying to remember but could somebody enlighten me - do we get much say in whether or not Gold Coast get a PP? Can we oppose it? (Who stopped us getting one a few years ago? Wasn't GC was it?)

Sorry if this has been covered before, but we need all the help we can get -  we are a real team, with flesh and blood supporters, not some Hollywood franchise bunch of clowns. We should do everything we can to stop Gold Coast getting a Priority pick.

I think all clubs get the chance to put forward wish lists and they get consulted on significant decisions, but ultimately 17 clubs could reject the notion and the commission could still sanction a pick before the draft.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
