Although we lost the game Gawny was a winner andĀ  wasn't concentrating on kicking for goal. However he was thinking of beingĀ Ā All AustralianĀ  RuckmanĀ  for the third time after wiping Grundy's censored.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to run with Shanks for his next food truck venture.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting Max’s kicking is our biggest issue. But itĀ is just such an obvious flaw, I am shocked it is still happening.

Regardless, he was huge on Monday. I shudder to think what would have happened without him.

The kicking of nearly all of our players is an issue for us.

Ā

I think since 666,Ā  there is a bit more run and carry happening,Ā  and more space opens up,Ā  than last year...Ā  so kicking on both sides of the body,Ā  IMO is a must once again.Ā

Ā

I think one-sided kicking was enough since the flood entered the AFL terminology...Ā Ā

But now its time for disposing of the Pill,Ā  on either side of the body.

Ā

We have to work on this again now.Ā  And IF Viney's foot is stuffed... then he MUST learn to kick right-sided.

Ā

Same with one-sided Petracca...

I love Max, but have an idea.....How about never have a shot at goal from near the 50m arc?

Someone throw in a block, Max handballs to a smaller mobile half forward or a mid fielder, they then have a shot on goal. Most other clubs do it.....

Ruckmen should never be having shots from the 50 m arc with a game in the balance, or am I talking [censored]?

At least he's consistent.

I wish someone could explain why he just doesn’t aim at the right goal post from close in and to the right of it when further out.

This has been going on for years and is nothing less than a joke, from a great player and allegedly professional sporting club to not correct his goal kicking.

Here is a thought maybe just run in over the man on the mark it's a proven goal kicking technique.

It’s like a golfer who constantly slices - they’ll aim further Left (RH golfer) to compensate and the sub consciously realise they need to leave the face open otherwise it’s going way left and the issue is compounded.

The flaw is the technique. For Max run straight at the man and kick over him.

There is an argument to be had that his height of ball drop probably doesn’t compensate for the rotation of the earth (sorry flat earth era) hence the shankery we see.

He's a shocking kick, but he still kicked the most important one down at the Cattery. Thanks Big Maxy!

Yeah been there, done that

It's like having a rattlesnake in your back pocket!

As for Gawny ... his kicks for goal are like the draw shot in golf so why doesn't he just aim at the right hand goal post (or just outside it)

A golf slice is easily fixed

Lessons

My golf coach from ages ago told me that learning golf is kinda backwards. You start perfecting technique from the green back.

Yeah I had a slice that turned wicked when starting further left, he taught me to set up right and now I have a draw…………though he started shaking his head when I walked up to putt with a driver in my hands.

Interesting

Could have a few beers - or soda waters - about that

Disagree

But I’m not a coach

Yes, eventually I reconstructed my swing and got rid of the slice ... but I'm still a mug golfer!!

For a good laugh have a look at Robin Williams take on the sport on youtube

Will do

I know from 35 years of playing it’s a horrible horrible game.

That and the 96 masters. And the 2008 open. And the rest

Let me know if you’re up Byron way for a hit

I'm 68 years old & haven't kicked a footy in 10 years yet I would back myself against Max in taking 10 set shots for goal 20m out at 45 deg.

Is it possible that he has actually got chewy on his boot?

So funny that at just a couple of absolutely crucial moments for our club he became goal-kicking champion.

If you're a golfer that regularly slices but has your swing somewhat honed in then yes I agree.

If you're slicing one minute, hooking the next and occasionally hitting it fat then you have real problems!

It bothers me no end that Max’s routine can be fixed and yet despite all the clubs goal kicking coaches it never has.

Step 1: Stop spinning the ball in your hands on approach it distracts your mind from what you need to do. Hold it properly in front of you laces pointing at the middle of the goals with the top of the ball pointing at your belly button.

Step 2: Walk or slow jog straight at the target. Don't skip, don't arc, just go straight

Step 3: In the kicking motion look at the ball and nothing else. Visualize kicking the ball through the goals to land 10 rows back

Simple and guaranteed to be way more reliable.

Yep. He won us a game at the cattery years ago but he'll cost us one eventually.

Terrible kick and should be dishing it off until he takes the time needed to fix his technique.

It's a fundamental of the game and he's paid to execute it properly.

Yes I love him but FFS he's cost us some goals over the last couple of years

Needs to do just one thing, stop kicking the ball super high when close to goal.

Kicking the ball harder adds risk for no reward. Should be more of a passing type kick

Describes my game yesterday. Birdie par 5s , 300m drive into a 319 par 4, then just a raft of double bogeys, some very handsy hooks. Blargh. Not a fan of Sim Max 2s though. 2 weeks ago during a lesson flushing nearly every single iron.

it’s all practice. And a horrible game šŸ˜‚

Many times I have made this suggestion that I believe will cure his problems forever.

He kicks a left hand hook shot. Not much but just enough to miss from straight in front.

Maxie should be encouraged to skip to the left before the run in and run in at a slight angle to straight.

The hook kick will then sail through the big sticks.

Easy. Just do it.

Even Maxy himself rates that goal as the most important…

This explains the answer to the question Why is golf called ā€˜golf’? Answer: because when the dictionary was first compiled the word ā€˜F*%#!’ was already taken.

  • CASEY: Northern Bullants

The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.

  • GAMEDAY: Sydney

It’s Game Day, and the Demons have a golden opportunity to build on last week’s stirring win by toppling Sydney at the MCG. A victory today would keep them firmly in the hunt for a finals spot and help them stay in touch with the pack chasing a place in the Top 8. Can the Dees make it two in a row and bring down the Swans?

On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark.Ā The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss.Ā The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.Ā

  • REPORT: Brisbane

ā€œMax Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.ā€ - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
