I like Spargo a lot. I'm not sure he'll make it and I agree he is probably lucky to get a game on current performances.

What I see is someone who creates and adds value to our current possession situation. 

Last year he would only have 7-15 disposals, but they would regularly improve our position by opening up space, getting a player on their correct side, creating a bit of time,  etc. His possessions often resulted in us having the opportunity to attack. 

This year it hasn't worked as frequently, with more turnovers and less possessions, he has been poor.

when spargo is playing well he's involved in score chains - they're backing his ability and competitive drive to get him back to being the player he was last year

anb and stretch had opportunities and failed; now it's spargo's turn to get a go to prove he belongs at afl level at the moment

if lockhart hadn't been ANOTHER of our 'wait...he's injured?!??' players then i doubt spargo would have the opportunity that he now does

re kolodjashnij, i thought his dinky little kicks and his ability to execute the switch were really poor - regularly missed targets or seemed to nail the oppo on the chest

he went hard when it was his turn tho, and best of all he was INVOLVED in the play

one thing i don't understand is whether or not they see him in the back flank sweeper role in the afl or more of a wing role?

he definitely looks more comfortable behind the ball at vfl than he did on the wing at afl (no surprise there)

if he does show the sort of form that warrants afl selection then presumably that will free salem up to play a more attacking role, which will help the side's disposal going i50 too

He is a natural footballer and team player 

Does what the coach asks

Had they not decided to turn him into a forward and part time ruckman

I believe he would have taken Oscars position this season and done a much better job

Lockhart: Genuinely all round classy game from Lockhart. Attacked the contest with such speed and power and used the footy well. 24 disposals 7 tackles and kicked 1.1.. On current form you would want him playing instead of Spargo. I am intrigued what a full AFL pre season could do for someone like Jay.

Lewis: Exactly what you expect from Lewis. Was clean and just marshalled the midfield around the contest with his leadership and experience. Really liked his game.

Preuss: Dominated around the ruck and around the ground. I felt at times he missed timed his leap. But that got better as the game wore on. He was a genuine brute today and honestly after watching that performance i would bring him in next week. Not only does he draw defenders and crash packs but also follows up with his 2nd efforts and pressure. Loved big Preussy today. 19 disposal 6 tackles 6 marks 41 hitouts and kicked 1.3

Dunkley: I honestly forgot that he was on our list until they mentioned his name pre game lol. But bloody hell he was very impressive! Plays a lot like his brother Josh when he is in the midfield and cracks in hard. Campbell Brown summed it it up well when he said he just gets in the right spots in the right time. Used the ball well and has a touch of class about him. Each quarter he would start up forward then rotate into the midfield for a 5 to 8 minute burst. Play another game like that and he'll be seeing AFL action very soon. 21 disposals 5 tackles 6 clearences and kicked 3 goals

KK:  Really loved his game today and really showed out with his composure and class. At one stage he courageously ran into on coming traffic and took a great intercept mark in the middle. The big thing that stood out to me was his workrate. He used his big engine to good use and at one stage he had it out on the back  pocket and kicked 40m up the field to a contest and by the time it got there, KK had already pushed himself to help out a teammate and get a handball receive.That would have really excited Goodwin. 

Wagner: He ia a genuine star at VFL level and today was such a complete performance. Used his speed around the contest and rarely wasted the footy. Going on todays form i just wish he could translate that into AFL level.

Special mentions to JKH, Petty and Chandler who all played really well also.

Dunkley also kicked 3 goals in his VFL debut for the Doggies just before we drafted him.  Seems hes a goalkicking machine.  Exciting stuff.

And Lockhart is a total gun,  hes way above VFL level. Too bad he isnt in the team tomorrow ahead of Spargo.

He is a good tap ruck. That is why he is part time ruck. But he isn't a forward. I'd have him down back and pinch hitting in the ruck. His asset is his versatility. He will struggle to get a game here on out though. Lever and May back push a couple out.

Lockhart and Bedford played well. Both will be in the AFL side regularly over the next 2 years. Lockhart is that far ahead of Spargo it is obvious

Bing, this is a bloke that has come in from no AFL pre season whatsoever and has showed glimpse of his talent. I watched him yesterday and he was such a dominant player using his speed and aggressiveness around the contest. Spargo coming in on the back off 2 weeks off with injury and then on top of a poor VFL game was quite bizarre..

As someone that's spent time with Spargo in his junior days, i am obviously a big fan and knows what he is capable off. Right now he is extremely lucky to be playing today, and is on thin ice after several players put their hands up yesterday.

If he does not perform today then i would bring in Lockhart. Besides, for the good of his development it would not hurt him if he was at Casey developing his game and getting more midfield time where he was such a dominant player back at under 16s level.

It is truly amazing what a difference eight days can make in the life and times of a football club. It was a little over a week ago that the Casey Demons side were literally crushed into submission by the Werribee Tigers at Avalon Airport Oval. The losing margin in that game was not huge but the way they struggled to produce and cohesion in their play was obvious for all to see. 

On Sunday at Casey Fields as part of heritage week, the team wore the Springvale FC jumper and made its own turnaround in time against Collingwood VFL. And it was a dramatic turnaround that was told on the scoreboard in terms of a 63 point win that might well reignite the club’s season. 

The difference can be explained mainly in terms of the number of AFL-listed players available to Casey Demons head coach Jade Rawlings and to the infusion of a wealth of experience at the highest level which they brought with them in the game. This automatically added to the confidence level of every player and they were all able to take risks and produce efforts that have simply been out of the question over the past couple of months.

The return of Jordan Lewis from a suspension brought with it a significant amount of on field leadership and flair. Lewis himself spent a great deal of time in the midfield where he picked up 30 possessions, took eight marks and controlled the game’s proceedings.

The team’s intent was on display from the beginning as it attacked constantly in difficult conditions and against a cross wind that slightly benefited the visiting team. Six minutes into the game, Casey had three goals on the board and led 20-0. The Pies fought back but the home side maintained control with a three goal burst in the middle of the second term seeing them off to a handy 34 point half time lead. Throughout the day, the defence led by Harry Petty was superb as it strangled the life out of the Collingwood attack. 

Having forced the opposition into submission, the Casey Demons turned the second half into a cakewalk as they coasted away to a comprehensive 15.12.102 to 6.3.39 in which the incoming talent flourished.

Apart from Lewis, Kade Kolondjashnij was a standout showing glimpses of his early form at the Suns and collecting 28 touches. Jay Lockhart (24 possessions) underlined how much he has improved with a few AFL games under his belt, as did Corey Wagner who was brilliant in accumulating 27 touches. 

The Demons would also be pleased with mid season draft pick Kyle Dunkley who booted three goals, accumulated 21 disposals and showed enough to suggest that he might be heading for AFL honours at some stage as the season progresses.

Dunkley’s three goals were matched by skipper Mitch White who was strong in the air (10 marks) and around the ground. Jimmy Munro and Will Collis were also strong contributors for the Demons.

The Casey Demons cause was enhanced by the strength of Braydon Preuss in the ruck and around the ground. He was capably backed up by Declan Keilty while lightly built ruck rookie Austin Bradtke also showed promise in his maiden VFL appearance after spending some time in the NAB Under 18 League.

The team has a bye next week and then faces up to the difficult task of pushing a claim from a long way back for finals honours.

Lockhart was the standout in terms of playing a class above. His ability to break out of traffic, use the ball well, mark strongly etc etc was a cut above. 

Dunkley was really good to watch as well mostly around the stoppages. He has a natural ability to create room for himself to get a kick away and just as importantly he has the penetration to make that kick useful. I'm sure he has a lot to develop including using his hands more creatively but I can see why he was recruited. For some reason no Melbourne player can get a long snap out of traffic either at a stoppage or in the forward line so I hope we don't ruin Dunkley's ability to do it! 

Kyle Chandler is the other one who plays like he'll be a handy player. He's quick on to the ball or to tackle, seems to read it well and has a decent mark for his size. His sidestep to get on to his left is very nice as well. 

Oh and he's almost certainly too slow and small to have it work at AFL level but Mitch White dominated as a lead up 3rd tall. Played like Tom Lynch (crows). A little more speed and good health and he would've had a decent AFL career I think. Glad he's sticking around at Casey.
