SCREAM by Whispering Jack

The Norwegian Expressionist artist Edvard MunchĀ painted a number of versions of his famous work ā€œScreamā€ and, every time my mind goes back to last year’s Preliminary Final at Optus Stadium between Melbourne and the West Coast Eagles, each and every one of them reverberates through my mind as if my head is being pummeled by a sledgehammer.Ā

When I think of that half time scoreboard from that match showing West Coast at 10.9.69 to Melbourne 0.6.6, I feel like the man standing by the railing, hands cupping his ears in horror at the disaster unfolding at theĀ place where, only a matter of weeks earlier, the Demons had sealed a place in their first finals series for a dozen seasons against the very same opposition.Ā

After the game, I Ā thought time would heal the wounds and the Demons would take the result both as a character-building lesson and a stepping stone to bigger and brighter things. They were, after all, the competition’s highest-scoring team for the season with plenty of attacking targets fed by a potent midfield and underpinned by an adequate and improving defence that had recruited a top notch key defender in Steven May and was expecting the early return from injury of another in Jake Lever?

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, you could fill the pages of the Encyclopedia Brittanica with the answer to that question and the various solutions that have been posited by all and sundry toĀ restore the confidence of the Demon faithful and to end the nightmares enduredĀ Ā since the 2019 season began. Not even the last two matches with their come-from-behind, get out of gaol free, nail bitingĀ winsĀ against Hawthorn and the Gold Coast Suns have put an end to the screaming fits.

The most common attemptĀ to explain the reversal from last season to now, hasĀ been centred on the team’s decline in attacking strength from oneĀ that averaged almost 105 points a game in the home and away season to this year’s output of less than 70 - a startling statistic, especially in light of the fact that week after week, they are still getting the ball inside the 50 metre arc manyĀ more times than their opponents.

So far nobody, least of all, Simon Goodwin has been able to explain the club’s impotence in attack. Perhaps there is a light on the horizon after last week with Tom McDonald getting his biggest return for the season (3 goals) or perhaps they can take heart from the fact that in the space of 40 seconds at the end of last week’s game, they scored more than 10% of their entire score?

But even that will need to be augmented by a lot more work on the defensive side. For much of the season, the Demons have been leaking goals too easily and the following statistic shows up the fact that they have been unable to impose sufficient pressure on opposition forwards.

Since the opening round against Port Adelaide when they fell victim to sheer fatigue, the Demons have conceded 31 goals and only 9 behinds.Ā

In three of their last four games, the opposition have been deadly straight in these final quarters  – Ā St Kilda managed three straight and Hawthorn and the Gold Coast Suns kicked four. In between, Richmond kicked 5.4, while earlier the Cats scored 7.3 (after 6.0 in the third), Essendon 6.1 and Sydney 2.1. In other words, the pattern shows Melbourne struggling to kick goals while, at the other end, its opponents rarely miss.

If Goodwin can overcome this phenomenon, made all the more difficult by the fact that the club is ravaged by injury at the moment, he will be entitled to the tag of ā€œgeniusā€. Ā

The fact that the club has been hit by those injuries might in fact help because he has no option but to make changes to his line up this week.

Hopefully, he will find a way to ensure that, we the fans, will be screaming with delight on Friday night.

However and unfortunately, I can’t see that happening this week.

If we had a full-strength side, we'd be pumping up this Friday night as our revenge and a chance to embarrass the Eagles like they did to us.Ā

Instead, it feels like we're limping over there and an honourable loss will satisfy most.

I hope I'm wrong and the boys play their best game of the season to really kick-start our season.

Suspect you're right tho

How much are flights for this one?

$1,500 one way from Melbourne via Helsinki like last September?

Will Jetstar againĀ put on an additional $300 one way flight that gets you there 3 hours after the games starts?

A 3-4 goal loss is probably the best we can hope for given the depleted side we will taking over for football's toughest assignment behind Geelong at GMHBA stadium.Ā Ā

I'm thinking of going via Phuket... But skipping the Perth leg !

Ā

Honestly, we're **censored** this week!

I don't think I'll even post on DL during the game as it'll beĀ just plain unfair to expect the 2s side that we'll have to field to put up more than an honourable effort and try to be gallant in defeat!

Blood the young players, stack the backline, hope for the best

I hope the players aren't as pessimistic as the supporters!Ā Even if some of the players would not be considered to be in our top 22, those who will be playing are being given anĀ opportunity to show they belong at the top. I expect nothing less than a spirited performance.Ā

That one went well if I remember correctly.

Luckily there have been so many huge losses by MFC that I am able to merge them into my collective forgetfulness.

Would like Friday to be a night to remember but not counting on it.

I think it'll be closer than expected 2 goal win to the eagles...

I'm not prepared to write off the season if we lose.

Fremantle, Hawthorn, Bulldogs, St Kilda are all projected to lose and if so they'll all be 4-5. Even with Essendon beating Freo they'll be only 4-5.

Port will beat GC at home this week but have to travel to Launceston the week afterĀ and could be 5-5 after round 10.

If we beat GWS we'll be 4-6 and in the thick of things. Yes percentage is a problem but if we start winning games it will obviously improve.

GWS next will be our season on the line.

I have my third positiveĀ feeling going into a game for the year. The previous two have been Sydney and Hawthorn so I’mĀ looking to keep a 100% strike rate. I was nervous going into last week and the performance justified it.

No Melksham will make it tough but Preuss and Bull Smith being the strongest performers in the VFL gives me hope that we canĀ cobbleĀ something together which will see an improvement on our 33% inside 50 conversation rate.

Whether or not we win, I have a feeling we’ll be more competitive than is widely expected.

IfĀ we doĀ win,Ā it will be the best win of theĀ Goodwin era given our injury list.

Too many injuries but wet coke are not in form. We will get done.

Unfortunately I predict absolute carnage. I hope we show something and make it close at least. I actually don't think I'm physically ready to see West Coast smash Melbourne again so soon after watching it in person with my hopes so high…

Their forwards will dominate our inferior backline. I can’t see us being within six goals come the final siren.Ā

I hope we go in with anĀ  'attitude',Ā  to take the game on.Ā Ā  Believe Dees.Ā Ā  Be aggressive.Ā  Play aggressive.

Will be fascinating to see how Goodwin prepares for this tough assignment.Ā

Win and we are right back in the mix.Ā

tell me, where are the goals going to come from to kick a winning score? I'd love nothing more than to be wrong

And their backline will dominate our inferior forward line.

McGovern, Hurn, Barass (if he plays) will have a picnic. They will take intercept marks reminiscent of the Filth/Oxley match a few years ago.

What's with all the negativity?

I'll be furious if we dont win by at least 8 goals. If 5 days of the team watching the prelim final replay while Goody and Macca eyeball each player yelling "You're a c$&t" doesn't spur us to win big then I'm afraid all is lost.Ā

Dees!Ā

Ā

Playing them for the 3rd time in 14 games. Hoping we are within striking distanceĀ for long enough to make the EaglesĀ poop their pants in the last quarter.Ā Stay close enough for long enough and anything is possible in this weird season.Ā

Preferably, it would be better to do what the Druggies did to them over there around the same time last year.

I was sure we'd lose until I just came across this

  • NON-MFC: Round 10

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury toĀ  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - ā€œnam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin ambā€ which roughly translated is ā€œevery heart beats true for the red and the blue.ā€ >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeatĀ  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
