Nasher 33,686 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 If we drop Weideman for Preuss, our tall forwards are Preuss and Smith. Preuss was going alright before the injury but I’m still pretty unconvinced he’s any good as a forward. If he’s not marking it there’s not much else he does - he doesn’t know when or how to bring ground players in to play, and he is too slow to do anything about half backs who want to escape with the ball. I liked Smith’s game last night, but he’s a medium sized forward who is borderline AFL level. He tries his guts out though, which is hard not to love. We’ve definitely got a problem at the moment as Weid was hopeless again last night, but I’m still confident he’s got the right attributes and will come good. If you drop him now and go with a makeshift Preuss/Smith forward line, I see that as giving up on the forward line before the game has even started. At least with Weideman in, there’s at least some prospect of the miraculous happening and they start to fire, no matter how minute it is. I hope the TMac back thing is only temporary. We desperately need him to return to last year’s forward marking form. 4 Quote

Tim Smith is so much more versatile and mobile than Preuss and arguably shown that he has been our best forward target we have had all year. Preuss may be of use resting forward, he is so slow though. Frost has been our best back so far this season. It is run this team needs more of. If you are going to sacrifice a forward to play on Sicily then you are playing into their hands and Sicily has won the battle. The way to beat Sicily is to have a good forward make him have to earn it. We've been killed all season by how easy other teams have intercepted our forward 50 entries and rebounded, I don't think it's a bad idea to make the opposition's best 1 or 2 at that accountable. Frost has been very very ordinary in defence, he has little football IQ so is too easily out maneuvered or lost whenever the ball is not straight in front of him, he can however stick to a man of given 1 job. Garlett is there to help if the delivery is crap, that's his main job, crumb and pressure, he did neither effectivity last night, ANB was far superior and I wouldn't say he had a good game. Quote
Wrecker45 3,381 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Out: Tmac (rest / injured), Weid (omitted / weights room), Viney (injured) In: Petty, Keilty, C Wagner Petty to play back Keilty forward - guaranteed to have more influence than Weid. Better in the ruck and a more reliable mark. Give him a go. Move C Wagner back and Fritsh forward we win the inside 50’s, Frish has the skill set to kick goals and benefit from the inside 50’s If Pruese is ready bring him in for Petracca. Sit him in the goal square for the long bomb. When the ball is in our forward line with congestion he should be standing 70m out where if it comes to him he can take a few large steps an kick it through. It can either come through a quick panicked kick from the opossition or if we get it kicking it backwards to him. Jordan Lewis is a shadow of himself but is still a beautiful kick. We need to develop a strategy for him to kick it into our forward 50 and ANB to follow his man back so we don’t get slaughtered on the counter attack. Quote

So who do you think has done a better job down taking the best opposition forward? Frost's best position is as an intercept marker and for the last few years has been encouraged to run and carry. It shows he is versatile and only matched for that by Salem and Fritch who are also being played out of position. Garlett's work and pace up the ground were good and better than Jones and Lewis. Tim Smith is as close as we have seen this year to a forward target and had a good game. It is the delivery that is the problem. It is what you get when the only plan the team has worked on is chaos ball and that is Goodwin fault, some brand. Quote

The dropped mark in the goals after some great body work showed he can play at this level with a bit more polish to be added. Should string games together. 8 Quote

Acrossplanet 13 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Put Weid. at CHB. Leave T Mac to play on Roughead. Frost 3rd tall. Move Lewis to forward pocket with short runs on ball where he made his name. Smith CHF. Pre use full forward. Can Petty play forward. Try that at Casey. He's got the size. . 1 Quote
La Dee-vina Comedia 17,137 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 (edited) The rest of the year should be used to make decisions on fringe players and respectfully farewell two veterans. Now that the year is effectively over, we can actually afford to play Jones and Lewis. We should also start playing Petty, Keilty, Sparrow and the Wagners, etc so some get seniors experience and others get fully tested so we know who to persist with. We also need to decide where some players belong. Is Hunt a forward? Where should Lockhart play? Should Petracca spend more time in the middle...or none at all? Where is Fritsch's best position? etc Edited April 25, 2019 by La Dee-vina Comedia 2 Quote

From where I was sitting he spent a lot of time on Caddy which I thought was odd at the time. Caddy had no influence at all on the game. 4 Quote

Adzman 2,154 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 I think the club needs to make some decisions on a few players heading into next season, and would suggest those with question marks get a game. They need to see if players like Petty, Keilty, Maynard and Baker are worth investing beyond 2019. Only way to see if they are up to it is to play them. 2 Quote
don cordner4 55 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Not to fussed on changes, please just drop ANB and never play him again 1 Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,773 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Not much use sending Weideman to Casey. The same with Hunt. They need to be played until the bye at least and then reviewed. Keep Garlett in and hopefully he is replaced by an in form Spargo after the bye. Watch for a game or two to play Petty and surely Keilty deserves a shot at some stage. And of course change the gameplan. Goodwin is in danger of losing the playing group if he continues with it. Doesn't matter one way or the other if we win against the Hawks but lose in the manner we have every game this season and the morale will plummet. 2 Quote

Frost is not an intercept marker at all, he doesn't have the ability to read the play well enough for that. Hore has been doing this over the last few weeks and has probably been our best defender, but it's really hard to give any of them a pass mark this year. Salem is probably the only one, Frost, Hibberd, omac, Jetta have all been very ordinary. I was happy to see Hibberd in a different role, and thought tmac got better as the game went on, but our defence as a whole has been bad all year Quote

Petty, Frost, Salem, Hunt, Viney and Hibbard as back 6 Middle of Gawn, Oliver, Harmes, Maynard. Bench of TMac, Stretch, Trac, C Wagner Viney to half back he cannot kick over 30 metres is slow as hell might as well not pick him and leave us one short. Quote
