Spargo has some of the talent that we need in our best 22 moving forward - he runs, he lowers his eyes when he kicks, and he has a bit of goal nous about him.

Not sure he has much goal nous at all, which is one of the major problems. In 2017 he averaged 0.8 goals per game and 0.7 goal assists per game.

Fwiw, I thought Garlett was pretty horrible last year but he not only averaged double the goals (1.6) than Spargo, he also averaged more goal assists (just - 0.8).

First time poster on the board. Its pretty clear the real changes need to happen within the recruiting department.

We havent drafted (at 18) a good small forward since Wonna a decade ago, we havent drafted a good winger since Scully a decade ago, we havent drafted an intercept defender since Rivers in 2002

For all the pats on the back Taylor recieved for Oliver, we have failed to draft any of the 3 most important types of modern footy.

Wasted way too many picks and time on Smith and Maynard who are both 28, and continuously extended Keilty and JKH who have no place going forward. We were forced to spend 3 first round draft picks in the last few years on May and Lever because we cant develop any of our own defenders. Oscar Mcdonald isnt going to be around in 3 years. Hes an average at best key back.

Not only are all of these things problems, but Jones and Lewis are looking like this should be their last season and Neville Jetta and Hibberd arent going any better.

Feels like we are 3 years away from having a crack at the top 4 again

Which Smith are you referring to?

While Weid may be one of a number of passengers right now, it’s Tmac who’s a broken sleeper in this train-wreck, with Spargo little more than a pebble in the path of the outbound train. And just to murder this locomotive metaphor even further, Jones is the incompetent train-driver from the coal-fired era when others have already switched to the efficiency of electric, while the Wagners are unwanted stowaways. Hibberd got drunk and disruptive in the dining cart.

Disembark: Hibberd (forcibly removed), Spargo (who would’ve thought there would be no room on board for someone the stature of Charlie? - needs a rest), anyone with a Wagner in their surname, and Tmac – the MFC isn’t some Saving Private Ryan endeavor where we need to ensure at least one brother survives.

Embark: Garlett and Lockhart up in the front carriage, KK in seat HB, and Keilty and May to share the remaining tickets wherever they can find the best spot up front or in the back.

Lucky: Jones again

Unlucky: Stretch

Keilty for TMac. He's had a shocker all year but last night took the cake. Looked lost,  despondent, injured,  ordinary.

Jeffy for Spargo.

Stretch for C Wagner. Our season is cooked. Stretch is not the answer but at least give the kid a run, plus he will be fresh.

If it wasn't such a big occasion I'd consider Petty in for Hibberd but the kid could be permanently scarred if he puts in another stinker.

Jetta is clearly injured, shows how desperate we are to have him playing.

So many other blokes should be dropped but nobody banging the door down.

Man on man footy against Tiges or we will witness a mauling.

So I ended up re watching the game .. I just don't understand why we continue to play the same [censored] game plan with no plan B and expect different results. Goodwin has been found out, yet refuses to try anything new. It's embarrassing to see us week in week out get outcoached out run and those forward entries are about as good as you will see in the under 12s. The season is done now IMO... It's just so sad what has happened to this team in 8 months...

Goodwins presser was also beyond embarrassing. Literally said the same thing week in week out there hasn't been any changes. Viney saying we will need to look ahead is the same throw away comment which has been made by a senior player at the end of a [censored] performance. Why is no one getting mad? Show some [censored] care and passion.

It'll be a wasted year.

Out.  Unfathomable skill errors: kicks straight to the opposition, dropping uncontested marks, continuously handballing under pressure (skills aren’t up to it this year)

in.  Insight and Courage in the coaching box

Looking at Petty yesterday, and in the few times I've seen him he takes a nice intercept mark but is slow.

I know he was a later pick but I fear he will be a one game bust...

The sad thing for me is that after watching Casey yesterday I don't think there is anyone playing better there. Plenty of players to drop but no replacements.

That would have us back in the Bailey era FFS!

I fear that’s  exactly where we are. A better core this time for sure but we have three or 4 older players that are cooked and no really good talent coming up. We have next to No pace and a need to redo our approach and game plan.  Hate to say it but yes It’s another  rebuild . The game just moved on and passed us..... again. Sigh. Hopefully this is just a mini one.

If TMac isn’t put to CHB get him out!

(listening to the presser he is staying forward so)

OUT

TMAC C Wagner Spargo

TSmith Lockhart Garlett

Lewis would want to never play that bad again or see ya later! What bathwater did Goodwin feed these players over summer??

Nobody banging down the down, but we have to bring in some run.

Stretch is an obvious one. Neal-Bullen is no good, but I think we have to play him, even if it’s on a wing to run and cover the oppositions spread a bit. Garlett for some nous around goals. I’d also swing the magnets around a bit and put TMac to play much further up the ground, or in defence.

All in all, I am going...

IN - Stretch, ANB, Garlett, Lockhart

OUT - Spargo, C. Wagner, Lewis, J. Wagner

Hardly inspiring, but that at least adds some run.

Why are there people here who defend spargo? He is hopeless. Why does he make himself a leading target constantly ? He is 4 foot nothing and consistently leads upnthe ground and demands the footy. Who do you think you are? Has he been instructed to do this? If so, what a fundamental f. Up by the coaches. He is never going to win a mrking contest. Then, when we need him crumbing inside 50, he is never there! So he can have all the pace in the world, but right now he serves no purpose in the side.

Yup... wasnt sure about who to bring in for T-mac but anyone who has some burst speed and hits the contest hard can't be any worse than old concrete boots.

Makes a pretty big statement to the rest as well that no one is sacred....step up or step out (hindered pre-season or not).

Edit: one more roll of the dice with Lewis provided he is played at HB and not on the wing.   No point selecting him if so.  If he plays a similar game to yday across HB against the Toiges then i would sack Chaplin and immediatley appont Lewis (ie, not.an FD decision either....Board / Pert needs to send a shot accross the bows of everyone in the FD...players and Coach/es!!).

We can’t continue to pick players on reputation or what they did last year so TMac, Hibberd, Lewis and Spargo have to go.

The Wagners have added nothing so we have to give others a go.

Petty and Kielty to replace TMac and Hibberd.

Lockhart, Garlett, Stretch and Baker to replace the others and finally give us a bit of zip.

Nobody on the sidelines inspires any sort of confidence in me to make us better.

Our yet again long injury list means we must continue to play VFL standard and out of form players.

I would say at least 9 Years.  4 years of downs downs & a bit of up under Goody.  Appoint new coach (year 5) ...Renovations and learning new game styles under new coach/FD (takes us to year 8)... plausible shot at it Year 9....roughly 2028/2029 (also assumes alot goes right over the 4 years post Goodwin).

Obviously Goody has to restructure again and decide on whether he will stick loyal to a few players whom he had pencilled in as his best 22 at start of the year. He also has to make a few tweaks to his game plan, but that's difficult in four days.

But I have four certain outs.

T-Mac - I said three weeks ago he does not look fit and by that I mean speed and agile fit. He's had turf toe and whilst I suspect he can still run a very fast marathon, I can guarantee you he would not be able to pass any zig zag test with speed at the moment. He should not be allowed to play VFL or AFL for two weeks, he has to go back to getting his body right. He carried a huge weight for us last year but he's been carried for five weeks now and Goody has to say no more.

Spargo - Another coach and fan favourite who has to get the chop. I love the way he goes about it, but he's just not able to break from tackles and he's not impacting on the scoreboard. His inboard kicking howler made the VFL non-negotiable.

Weid - yep he looks like Tarzan but unfortunately he just can't get it and the dropped mark off the inspirational Petracca play made it clear he has to go back to the twos and get some confidence back. Five goals in five games is bad enough but one tackle and just 15 pressure points tells the other story.

The other out for me is Corey Wagner and it's not that he doesn't have a strong work ethic, it's just that he just isn't providing the link up excellence that we need.

I also suspect Nev will be out injured and to be honest we can't carry injuries at this time and especially given the short break will mean at least one player from either side will most likely get sore very early.

The three certain ins are:

Garlett - Spargo gets to the crumbs but hasn't got the pace or strength to break free. Jeffy isn't clean but invariably gets free and we need his pace up front and it will allow Hunt to go back and take one of their very quick forwards.

Stretch - A straight swap for C.Wagner. Billy is cleaner with the ball and makes position well. Goody doesn't rate him, (we know  that because he has been given so few chances in the past three years) but he deserves a decent shot at it. The Richmond game will probably get ugly but he's the only guy in the twos at the moment who can probably make a difference if he can step up a level.

Lockhart - Over his injury and ready to again have a solid crack at it.

The fourth in is between Keilty and Oscar. Oscar will probably get the nod because Goody has always rated him and will have to play on Tom Lynch because Riewoldt will be back. The good thing is that Lynch is still slow in movement from his knee, so that gives Oscar a chance of keeping up with him.

Assuming Nev is also out, then the final spot comes down to either Sparrow or Keilty and conditions should determine that. Personally I'd still have ANB in because even if he butchers it a bit, he will cover 14-16km and the night conditions suit his style more.

Exactly. And there are some calling for the recall of Omac. What planet are they on.

Planet Reality.

Do we have a better option if Reiwoldt plays and they have him and Lynch? Then there’s Caddy who plays tall and small well. I’m sure most of us would want to see Hibbo and Fritsch taking key forwards again, not.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
