    Cast your minds back to last week and recall that feeling you had when the ball went anywhere near the vicinity of Buddy. In a similar exercise, think about when Tomald had the ball.  Therein lies your answer.

    Is the opening 'we' referring to supporters, or the players and coaches who played with him.  The supporters' views would hardly matter.  Also I hadn't realised that our incompetent medicos had examined him and rejected him.  Sorry, I have a niggling doubt you are right.

    IMO,  buddy likes the curtain around Sydney.   He gets to do his stuff in relative anonymity.  I don't think its he who wants to leave Sydney.

    Each time WE, or others,  takes a way too highly payed player off the Swans books,  it will come back to hurt us,  as it frees up the Swans to go spend on younger players we should be after.

    He is 32 years old, unable to train, is starting to lose his long kicking and has another 4 years to go.

    not that outrageous..let's say they had given him a five year deal which had run out at the end of 2017. They probably would have needed to pay him an extra $100k for each of those first five years. At the end of 2017 he would have commanded a three year deal at say $1.2M.

    Assuming he retires at the end of 2019 (big assumption) the difference is only around $1M. Not chicken feed but to get Buddy to Sydney it was well worth it.

    His reported contract is 10 million over 10 years.

    Under your scenario... 

    2013-2017 : 5 x 1.1million = $5,500,000 

    2017-2020: 3 x 1.2million = $3,600,000

    Total = $9.1million

    So yeah, in hindsight not too bad. But you only have him contracted till 2020 when you could reduce it right down or more likely let him retire. Plus you would much prefer this option as a club when signing as you get to renegotiate in 2017. 

    The AFL advised at the time of the trade that Buddy's salary would stay in the salary cap even if he retires prematurely (which they will probably go against). If he is forced to retire at the end of this year (as you say unlikely but possible), he will be chewing over a million per year for the next three years. That's huge.

    Sydney have been lucky that he has been able to produce at such a high level for so long. It really could have been a lot worse. They took a punt and it has largely paid off, but it was outrageous at the time.

    Just checking we are talking about the same player. I thought the thread was about a guy named Lance 'Buddy' Franklin . . . currently playing for the Sydney Swans and formerly of Hawthorn. The one that hasn't played less than 17 games per year for the last ten years (19 last year and all four this year), has kicked at least 50 goals a year for 11 of the last 12 years (including 57 last year), averages at least three goals a game (including 2018) over a career spanning 294 games. 

    Obviously I'm thinking of a different Buddy Franklin . . . not the "overweight, overpaid, has-been" one.

    Hi BAMF

    I really cannot see Buddy playing past 2020. That's why I did the comparison in the sense that a "reasonable club" would have offered him a five year deal and then the next would be a three. After that it would be year to year.

    No disrespect to Frost but if he can hold him to some cameos I'm sure that most backmen will do the same.

    His inability to train must also impact upon the team ethos

    I would take him in a heartbeat , He  would command the best back man every week. Put him sitting in the forward 40 area  and stays there, even in a  pocket. Could be the icing on the cake we need, with Lewis gone at the end of the year, we are losing lots of experience. We will be chasing a experienced player . We have the salary cap room, we have already started that we have room for one more star. If what i've read is correct he will earn approx 3.5 to 4 mill over the next 3 years, then he worths a second round pick . if the swans pay some of that expect a first round pick. But remember we have salary cap space and need to use our first round pick ! 

    Would you pay Boyd 6 mill for 6 years to win a premiership ??  there are no guarantee's but Buddy would get us closer !!

    And I want to see us win at least one Premiership !!

    thanks... that means he has five years to run including this one. On that scenario his 5 year renewal would have come at the end of 2018.

    Would have been interesting to see what he was offered assuming he was recontracted at years end.

    To make the original deal "work" they really need him to play this year and next.

     Good point.

    Maths is the same as its based off the number of years Diamond Jim proposed and a ten year contract which he is actually on.

    However that does mean that he has in his 6th year and has another 4 to go. That's a long time left to be paying over 1 million per year. 

    Would any club take that contract over? I don't think so

Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
