Wagner would be 4th or 5th in line that role, and lucky for him we are missing AVB, Joel Smith, Garlett and Hannan.

Hope he does well.

Shocked to see Wagner in there, but I like it.

Someone in graphics at the MFC really did a major stuff up with the half forwards/full forwards and followers.

Hope they don't fire the work experience kid...

Our 18 looks very strong but our depth is already being tested by our injuries. As evidenced by The bench and emg

I have a question mark over Viney. Named in the pocket.

Frost on watts. No. Omac on ryder. No.

So, from the 22 who ran out for the Prelim, it's:

In: Fritsch, Hore, C Wagner, Hunt

Out: vandenBerg, Hannan, J Smith, Tyson

Not terrible, but Hore/Wagner/Hunt is not 100% ideal.

It will not come down to pace but Gawn and the midfield and our contested footy.

Read my post, the one that Pro Dee responded to.

Decent looking side, more experienced and bigger bodies than Port (we also don’t have kings of flakiness Watts and Motlop)...should win my main concern is Jones Melksham and Viney are a bit underdone.

The AFL website lists each team's "notable absentees". It's hardly an accurate guide of anything but, still, Collingwood has 10 players named, then we have 9.

Some teams have 3 (e.g. Port).

The team won’t line up as printed.

There is no way they would be playing them underdone.

Still think Ryder won’t play, as they have Lycett, Westhoff and Marshall named.

The three tall emergencies is odd / interesting - Preuss, Petty, Kielty....then Sparrow. I thought Stretch might get a look in as an emergency.

I'm surprised you'd contemplate them lining up like that.

But I wish they wouldn't mess around. Even just seeing Jordan Lewis's name in print next to Robbie Gray's in a forward pocket makes me break out in cold sweats.

Sam Gray in their emergencies. Thought he was a good player?

I worry that philosophy (ie. individuals picked on form) dictates our selections rather than best team to win against the opponent. We have 3 small fwds on bench. Risk being out match in height.

Fair point and enough to make anyone shudder, if not get full blown hives.

I’m staggered the club let Angus Brayshaw play on after all those concussions.

One bump can be another concussion in a single Moment.

Risk assessment isn’t an exact science you need expertise, an understanding of previous similar risks and luck.

One of the weakest 19-22 players I've seen selected in a Melbourne team for 3 years.

For us to win easy, Port need to be terrible (possibly what the situation is). But I think more realistically, we should win by 2 goals, but I'm not as confident as I was.

With our injuries I thought Stretch would get a bench spot.

He now knows where he is in the pecking order.

This should just be pinned to every pregame thread...

must agree.. Wagner surprises me ...ok but not  a world beater

Memories of Corey Maynard's selection.

Hore... know very little about him

Hunt... hasn't had  a good game for over a year

The practice game for Casey could be very important for a few players

Fingers crossed we get through the next few weeks with wins and then get a stable team

Our backline is not filling me with confidence. I suppose we won 2 finals with a similar lineup. But May getting himself suspended is really going to hurt on Saturday.

A few underdone players too

Not confident as I was hoping to be, but maybe just MFCSS kicking in on the eve of a new season

I am going to have nightmares that Watts plays a decent game.
