Why is Max representing the Demons at AFL Captain's day?

We deemed it better than Viney and Jones train rather than attend. Given their limited preparations, I think the club has done the right thing. Max will kill it there as well, he's loved and respected by all.

so, we have two captains that haven't attended...what do the conspiracy theorists read into this?

Yep, Jack and Jonesy both said in their interviews they would be put through their paces today out at Casey, to prove their fitness for round 1.

Theory 1          Jones was swimming at Cheviot beach and was captured by the Russians in a submarine off Portsea back beach. He is currently on his way to Vladivostok for interrogation.

Viney was the one behind the grassy knoll and the Americans have taken him in for questioning.

Theory 2         There was a bloodless coup and Maxi, as the tallest player, has deposed Viney and Jones and taken on the captaincy by    himself.

As others have said, Jones and Viney need the run at Casey more than the photo op.  Max is next in line on the leadership ladder.

If there was a closed session out at Casey today perhaps it was more important to get run into the legs of Jones and Viney than with Max.

Or maybe the AFL wanted the more recognisable face of Max Gawn to be front and center for the paps.

They both gettings miles into the legs with a big training session out at Casey.

ESSENDON has failed to have a player represented in the official Captains Day photograph.

Defender Cale Hooker was originally flagged as the player to replace absent skipper Dyson Heppell.

The AFL has suggested it will photoshop an Essendon player in the photograph before its official release.

Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn was the Dees' representative, replacing co-captains Nathan Jones and Jack Viney, while Jason Johannisen stepped in for Western Bulldogs skipper Easton Wood.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the point of captain's day anyway?

Gotta give the media something to do...!

It's the AFL, no rhyme or reason needed

I see Essendon couldn't even get anyone there??

AFL says the Essendon captain will be injected into the photo at a later date.

Good old Essendon still thinking they can just do as they please

The rules don't apply to them, apparently

No conspiracy - below link to the Triple M news site confirms Jones and Viney to skip the AFL captains day to prove their fitness at a Casey Fields closed session (AFL sanctioned their absence). Need to get through that well to play v Port Adelaide.

Clearly the clubs think attendance is a pointless exercise. It's made even more so by those clubs - including ours - who have more than one captain. There were only 17 in the photo when there should probably have been more than 25.

It’s a marketing/ PR exercise!

Essendon might be the only club smart enough not to waste any of their players time with this.

Max just casually leaning there ?

I think they also usually tally up the captain's predictions on premiers, brownlow, rising star etc. at this event.

That information has already been published somewhere (I heard it being discussed on breakfast radio today). It might be a tie-in, but it's not the reason for the get-together.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
