Slightly left-field

Back :                     Jetta                  May                  Hore

Half Back:             Salem               O McDonald     Hibberd

Centre:                  Kolodjashnij      Viney                Brayshaw

Half Forward:       Petracca           Weideman        Neal-Bullen

Forward:               Melksham        T.McDonald       Spargo

Rucks :                  Gawn                   Oliver                Harmes

IC :          Jones        vandenBerg        Fritsch         Hunt

EMER:        Hannan          Lewis           Frost           Stretch

Obviously Lever not considered

Without Lever's intercept marking I'd be looking at playing Hore as a third tall.  His trick is intercept marking, much like the similarly sized Langdon at Collingwood and I think he can complement our two tall defenders.

I like Hunt's attributes, but concede he may find it hard.

We'll be playing over 30 players, so plenty will get their go.

Needless to say, it will change before round one.

Pruess will play, I think West Coast shows the rest of the league how to play Gawn in our last final. Pruess and Gawn to swap out of FF.

I don't personally agree just how I see it playing out. Pruess and MFC must have sat down and agreed on a plan for him to play, even from a financial point of view the more senior footy Pruess plays the more he earns(?)

I think 2nd Rick is the most valuable player on a list nearly.

I don't think that's slightly left field at all. looks pretty good to me, structure and personal wise. only changes I would consider making is maybe Preuss coming in for Hunt, considering Port may play 2 rucks like others have mentioned, and maybe Frost for Oscar but there's not much in that either way.

I'm just not a fan of playing Preuss and Gawn.  I very much doubt it's sustainable.  I see it only happening on the odd occasion and it will largely depend on matchups.  If I'm wrong I'm wrong.  I won't be.

I've also gone from being a Joel Smith advocate (look at my posting history) to being dubious.  He's a scatter brain with poor foot skills.  I don't think his incredible athletic prowess, courage and attack on the contest will overcome is low football IQ and decision making under pressure.

I watched his game again recently at the Adelaide Oval in round 19.  It would have done Tom Gillies proud it was that bad.  Sure, it's just one game, but I'm no longer confident he's best 22 in a top 4 team.

Joel and Frosty have similar attributes...great athletically but little to no footy IQ.

I think Preuss is a good chance for round 1 given that Port go with the 2 ruck option.

It will also be a matter of seeing if the new rule changes make any difference to whether you get a real advantage running 2 rucks.

I'm a bit dubious like yourself but will wait and see.

yeah i'm not that keen on playing 2 ruckmen either really. but I'm coming around to the idea on certain occasions where the oppo will likely try and double team Max with 2 decent ruckmen of their own, like WC did in the final. I see possible games for this likelihood are against Port, Pies and West Coast. don't think too many more teams could trouble us with it, off of the top of my head.

I also don't think J.Smith is best 22. think you summed him up pretty well. reserve fwd who could provide a contest if needed. think that's about all he really offers.

Obviously fair bit of water to go under the bridge before March 23rd with JLT form/injuries etc. but I’ll have a ping

Unavailable: Lever

B: Jetta - May - Hibberd

HB: Salem - Frost - Hunt

C.: Fritsch - Viney - Kolodjashnij

HF: Melksham - Weideman - Petracca

FF: Hannan - T.McDonald - Spargo

FOLL: Gawn - Brayshaw - Oliver

INT: Harmes - Vandenberg - Jones - Neal-Bullen

EMG: O.Mac - Lewis - Hore

unlucky: J.Smith, Preuss

Very good team, but looking at last years team selections, OMac will get nod over Frost, Lewis over Hunt(early in season).

Round one -

Preuss in against Port onto bench, ANB into pocket and Hannan out for mine.

Harmes on wing Fritsch on bench.

In waiting room:

Backs: Lever, Hunt, Frost

Mids: Stretch, Sparrow, Maynard

Utility: J Smith (has the speed and can close opponent down)

Forwards: Garlett, Hannan, T Smith, Keilty

Team just looks a step up from last years finals team!

I think Omac is a year off his best yet. His brother blossomed late. Frost has different attributes and may not be a smart footballer but his better short passes that he showed late last year and his gung ho make me choose him in big games. I havent seen training this year so Im possibly wrong!

I've been toing and throwing about which is the better combo May and O.Mac or May and Frost. Frost's speed gets him over the line for mine, but I think the club prefer O.Mac.

I wonder as well, IF OMc will spend many games with Casey this year, as Hunt has done.   Rebuilding his game and confidence.

I sense it might be an in and out year for OMc.

Once lever comes back in,  it will be verty interestink.

Ok, attempt number 1.

B: Jetta, May, Hibberd

HB: Hunt, O Mac, Salem

C : Fritsch, Viney, Harmes

HF: ANB, Weideman, Spargo

FF: Melksham, T Mac, Petracca

R: Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw

I/C : Jones, AVB, Hannan, Lewis

EMG: Garlett, Preuss, Kolodjashnij , Frost

Would like to see Trac play deep forward as much as possible with the occasional stint in the middle.

No doubt there will be a surprise selection or two come Round 1.

He hasn't played a good game yet and hasn't shown enough assets that will ever make him a sustainable AFL footballer IMO.

I could never understand the love for him on these boards (particularly from you mate) prior to him even playing. He's a ferocious tackler, with reasonable agility and that's about it.

The footy department rate Omac over Frost and Omac clearly wins in the footy IQ stakes.

I do wonder though if Frosts furious pace suits our manic game style more. In combination with May we could have two massive bodied backs who are lightning quick and highly aggressive.

I hope you're wrong but part of me thinks you'll be right. There's a good reason he wasn't getting a game at North.

I wonder if we're playing two bigs to take advantage of the new ruck rules and/or not having others take advantage of us when Max rests.

Werridee just likes making up teams.

Well, he has done well in the miasma of depth at this stage of the year. There are obviously going to be some week-by-week changes to a core team across the coming season. It is difficult to imagine that AVB, Stretch, Hunt, Preusse, Spargo, et al will miss out Rnd 1 but there just is not room for everyone. Hore is a worthy opportunity, it seems, pre-season form or no pre-season form - experience is another consideration. I don't mind at all that OMac is not picked.

It has been a while - whilst in the interim, bleeding in the backline - that we have had a rebounding and speedy backline.

Some of the tools were there on a variable basis, season to season but this current backline array looks poised to destroy opposition forwards and mid-fielders like fly-swatting road runners.

Frosty, May, Hibberd, Jetta (and Lever when returning), will be a core - a mechanised unit of role players - a great defensive barrier and destructive for those who might attempt to get in its way.

I'm a sucker for some of his attributes: aggression, courage and speed.  I also liked his first quarter in AFL footy against St Kilda at Etihad before he was injured over the boundary line by Riewodlt.

But I've seen enough now to be very concerned by his decision making and kicking.  I think he's one of those boom or bust footballers with little in between.

I see too many polished footballers ahead of him at the MFC.

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
