Recruiting/drafting way too many injury prone players IMO.

Perhaps the MFC could ask that all future draft selections and players that are traded into the club sign an affidavit that they will not sustain any future injuries.

Perhaps they could just apply common sense and stop taking risks with players who have a history of being injury prone....

Lever to make his return on Queens Birthday?

Would be great to have him up and running b4 the bye....

Why do I get the awful feeling that JKH will be ready before Vanders or Joel Smith?

At first blush the Joel Smith situation is a disgrace.

Quite likely if he was removed from the ground in the JLT game when he hurt himself, the injury would have been less severe.

Like Hawthorn??? Forget Burgoyne...O'Meara

Geelong??? Selwood or Stevie J....

We can't play it totally safe 'Febes' or we get nowhere...

I do understand the frustration though.

May & Lever would be handy on the park now.

Have a look at the two clubs you're comparing with, we are not even close to a Hawthorn or Geelong.

...and we never will be unless we take the opportunities that present.

It's a good idea to have a look at what strong organisations do and emulate them.

I'd rather build a solid base, then speculate, just like the Cats and Hawks did. Our history isn't great with recruiting and the last few years may come back to bite us.

Which ones?

KK sure.

Lever had 1 major injury before in his career. May had a couple of small soft tissues but had played a lot more than he missed the last few years. A lot of our recent recruits - Melksham, Hibberd, Lewis, Garlett, Preuss aren't guys who had bad injury histories.

Same goes for our draft picks. I may be wrong but as far as I can remember in the last 5 years the only guy we've drafted who had a big injury concern on him was Weideman.

I don't think we've had speculative picks or trades that I can think of...

Clarrie was probably the only one to come close as being speculative, would you rather we played safe and went for a solid player like Parish?

Injury List - Round 5

Oscar McDonald (concussion) – available
Neville Jetta (knee) — test
Jordan Lewis (hamstring) — test
Jay Lockhart (shoulder) — test
Braydon Preuss (shoulder) — test
Kade Kolodjashnij (concussion) – TBA
Steven May (groin) — 2-4 weeks
Joel Smith (groin) —  4-6 weeks
Aaron vandenBerg (foot) — 4-6 weeks
Mitch Hannan (knee) — 6 weeks
Jake Lever (knee) — 6 weeks
Jay Kennedy-Harris (knee) — 8-10 weeks
Guy Walker (shoulder) — indefinite
Aaron Nietschke (knee) — season

From experience I'd say a 4-6 week injury is much longer than a 6 week injury.

All clubs take risks with players who have a history of of injuries including geelong and hawthorn

I think you can say season and hope it is not.

Just like Hawthorn did with O'Meara (sp) and Scully. Depends on your medical staff diagnoses and an A1 medical/fitness team to get them right. Scully I'm still not sure about but did I just read that O'Meara has extended his contract? You take your chances sometimes.

Don't rush him  after the bye is fine.

I'm convinced the talk around Scully was all a smokescreen. Kennett has taught every one at Hawthorn politspeak. We were told Scully would be lucky to play at all this year, his injury was so grave he may never return, Hawthorn were looking long term, blah, blah. Lo and behold, he has been playing since Round 2. It's a miracle! Win, win for Hawthorn. They got a bargain, and praise for the expertise of their medical/fitness team/programs. What a load of codswallop.

Possibly, but a bloke who is limping around with an injury, who continues to play and seems to be limping worse at the end of the game than earlier, has most likely worsened his injury , rather than improved it. I think that is a fair conclusion to draw, given The extended period he is now facing on the sidelines.

However, as you said, or not.

Otherwise known as "rat cunning" DG.  Something the MFC seems to lack but  must find at the trade/draft table.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
