Agree this must happen without fail or the club is again on its last legs. I for one won't be tolerating a lack of accountability for what has happened.

With all due respect @stranga, what does that even look like?

Kind of reminds me of the hollowness of  David Warner fully apologising re: Joe Root and telling us all he has 'taken full accountability' without actually doing anything more than saying those words.

I'm not expecting public accountability or apology as i myself hate Hollow PR ,  I'm meaning I would expect as a minimum a full and thorough internal  review of all positions club wide and some tough decisions to be made that perhaps would normally be avoided by a club like Melbourne who have tended to accept certain levels of mediocrity.

Is Goody too nice? Fair question I reckon. As a supporter and an outsider looking in our coach looks to be very ‘matey matey’ with the boys. As the assistant coach under Roos for several years it is understandable (and preferable) he developed this type of rapport with the playing group but as he is now discovering in his second year in the hot seat, things are a far different proposition as top banana at AFL level. Relationships become far more complex. Tough calls have to be made. Noses on occasion have to be put out of joint and very occasionally a few cages rattled. I don’t know that I’m convinced on what I’m seeing publicly, at least not so far, that Goody has what it takes to rise to these types of challenges and command a respect that goes beyond friendship with people and into the realm of genuine leadership and man motivation. He comes across as overly measured, robotic and clichè driven in media press conferences. Certainly got all the footy industry speak and jargon down pat. But we need more than that. Much more. We’re talking about a fetid club culture here of ‘near enough’s good enough’’ acceptance that dates back as far as I can remember following the club. Back to the early 80’s. Many of you old timers will declare that  it extends back even further than that. Self-satisfaction and rolling along in a comfort zone is now a deeply ingrained part of the DNA of the MFC.

The worry here is that Simon Goodwin inherited the fruits of Paul Roos masterclass in footy club rebuilding , rode that wave without too much stress in 2018, but is now finding out just how truly gargantuan the task is going to be to have this club genuinely challenging for silverware. It’s the Mt Everest of jobs in this competition.  Matey matey clichè robot man is simply not going to cut it from here on in. Nice guys do often finish last. And right now - lo and behold - that’s exactly where we find ourselves.

That is true, but Simon doesn’t have a Jordan/Pippen or Bryant/Shaq to take over games singlehanded.  Phil was blessed with that.

i cannot remember the last Melbourne player to continually grab a game by the scruff of the neck and will us over the line. Phil never had to Tell MJ or black mamba to do that.  They took it upon themselves.

Goody needs the Gawns, TMacs, Oliver’s, Melks to stand up, it can’t all be on Simon, the players have to appear to care.  We have slotted back into the Melbourne before Roos, get smashed, boys out having fun on the socials.

Like you I want the MFC as a power in the AFL long after I shuffle off. As long as that happens then wether we win a flag or not is minor to me in my years left. I appreciate that it is probably vital to younger members and necessary to build membership. If it's happens fine but I long ago gave up on it as a must have.

My first time visiting the early threads here.  Some fabulous posts but this one was up there OD.  Talk about laughing out loud.  I really think you need to reconsider and nominate.  I'm sure you've heard the saying "never too old"

The current form slump is part of the reason it was important to contact Goodwin before the start of the season.  Can you imagine the further instability which would be floating about were he presently not contracted beyond the end of the season?

Whilst our start to the season is regrettable and constitutes unexceptable team performance, it is hardly unprecedented in AFL terms.  It would be more unprecedented if our climb from the bottom of the ladder continued uninterrupted.  Peter Jackson expicitly made this point in his final Demonland podcast last year that history tells us there will be setbacks, sighting the examples of mid 2000s Geelong and Richmond that I recall.

It's is a sign of a stronger club in times of hardship to keep the faith and persevere.  No doubt there are lessons for our players and coaches to be learnt from this period, but that's quite different to the questions of their fundemental character and ability that might be thrown about.

I think you are off the mark here.

What do you call the punting of Jack Watts to Port? 

Goody has also shown he is more than willing to send star players like Brawshaw back down to the reserves fix their deficiencies and to earn their place in the side when it's the right thing to do.

The impression I get of Goodwin is that he is hard but fair, a good comunicator and that players respect him because they know where they stand with him because he clearly comunicates his expectations of them and acts consistent with those values.

There were reasons Roos picked him as a sucessor.

I am Not sure it is the coach, the playing list, or an unhappy group following the addition of the GCS twins .

perhaps it is a bit of all the above.

Whatever way you look at it we are crap in 2019 no dispute about that.

one thing that is certain is we are following standard MFC procedure. 

After the worst coaching performance I have seen in my lifetime against the saints, Goody came back with a vengeance against the Tigers with some common-sense changes at selection and on-field.  He finally found a way to strip the magnets off his board and actually move them.  This week, he is contemplating sending McDonald forward again this week.  3 cheers from me.  Don't pigeon-hole him.  McDonald's 2018 was all class, and class is permanent as Clive Lloyd once said.

E - Saints - The wings are no place to hide anybody.

B+ - Tiges (actually A in that he did it in a short turnaround)

Goodwin's coaching and selections were abysmal in the first five weeks, but he had a much better game on Anzac Eve.

Clarkson-coached sides have regularly had us beaten before we have even taken the field over the past decade, so Goodwin will need to be at his absolute best for us to be competitive this week.

Good thread. I think the coaching should be calmly rated as you have done.

The Hawks are more like the Saints gameplan wise so this weeks ranking will be interesting.

While many have criticised our defence it is the lack of scoring for long periods which is killing us in most games.

I disagree, I thought they were ridiculous.

Oliver to FF (He's our only A grade mid)

Brayshaw to wing (came 3rd in Brownlow as a midfielder)

TMAC, Hibbo and Melk moves worked but then that takes away a 50+ goal FWD from last year, our in form forward this year who is the only one looking likely to hit the scoreboard.

As I repeated last year, I'm very concerned with the way Goodwin coaches, people should not be satisfied with a half of effort. The game style stinks, we still leak easy goals over the back, he's the poorest tactical coach in the comp.

Another thing I did say last year was he needs to be surrounded with experienced assistants from successful clubs. I thought there would definetly be changes post 2018 but I think it's one of their biggest mistakes going into this year. No Roos or Stone, the guy needs help. His attitude and endeavour are refreshing, but he needs some ideas from fresh minds.

Melksham in the middle was okay.. the rest were average. Harmes to Martin would have been the 1-wood.

 

He is clearly a man struggling without form players to make him look better than he is.. 

We average 56 inside 50s a game and 10 goals per game.

So that's one goal per 6 entries... remarkable...

 

 

To not be a fan of Goodwin is in imo a similarly harsh critique of Roos. He is after all part of the Roos/Jackson rebuild. It's about more than list and player development. He was chosen.
