Mentions Goody as still being unsigned beyond 2019.  A bit concerning as I recon there would be a good half dozen teams in the AFL that would like him as senior coach given the opportunity.  Not that Goody has given any indication of wanting out (quite the contrary in fact), but I'll be happier once it's a done deal and he has been signed on for another two or three seasons.

I don't see a concern for him leaving the club and the team that he has put together over the last 2 years or being lured to another club. Goody would have loose screws in his head to even think of that. He is too devoted to his boys and the cause. There is some unfinished business that is awaiting. I have faith that he is in for the long haul.

Would be the strangest thing for him to leave next season, he helped build where we are now and he's been given the daunting task of completing the job. Wouldn't make any sense for him to leave.

That's the impression I get too, but if say an Essendon, Adelaide or Port were to have another horror start to the year, sack their coach and start throwing big bags of money around, it might introduce a risk (particularly with the Adelaide clubs - we all know about the 'go home' factor).  Sounds like they are trying to get his contract extension sorted before the season proper, which would be good, otherwise I see potential for it to create an unwanted distraction for our season as it goes on.  Last thing we would want is to be half way through a season and heading for finals with speculation about will the coach be there next year.

You don't understand how Goodwin ticks if you even think he'd contemplate leaving for "big bucks" at the end of 2019.

A couple of years back when he was in the process of signing up to take the reins from Roos, His good mate Mark  Rucciuto tried to convince him to fill the vacant Adelaide coaching position. He didn't then,  not a hope in hell he will now after spending so much time gaining the respect of the players, plus he and Viney seem to have a great connection (looking in from the outside)

The more he was told not to do it due the club's history the more determined he became.

Good on him for looking to expand his knowledge base. He and the coaching team are not afraid of innovation (the 2 players off the back of the square plan) and looking at other sports to change the game in our favour. If it doesn't work, tweak it or drop it.

Interesting to see Craig is so involved with England Rugby. Massive operation.

Clubs hold on to good coaches.

Coaches rarely leave unless they are sacked, or about to be sacked. 

They invest in development, game plans, coaching staff and most importantly their players.

Think Clarkson, Buckley, Hardwick, Longmire, Simpson, even Scott Bros. Goodwin will join their ranks.

Agree with what you are all saying, but I don't think it's wise to think that Goodwin's comittment to the job he has with us is unshakeable and unchangeable if circumstances change.  Let's say we are struggling mid way through the season, Goodwin remains unsigned beyond 2019 and there are noises that maybe he isn't the guy.  It might be harder for Goodwin to resist a return to Adelaide if he was not contracted beyond the year with Melbourne and he might weigh up his families finacial stability above any sense of pride of commitment to his present playing group.  Real or not even just the media speculation could create a sense of instability within the club.  I think the sense of stability within the club over the past 4 years has been a key driver of our sucess.

Just my take - Goodwin has shown enough to provide better certainty and stability for all by providing him with at least a 2 - 3 year contract extension now.

I can see the potential and speculation that it  creates for this season and beyond. However l see that Goody is well respected and in control of his own destiny and will one day eventually move on like  all coaches do  one way or another. For now l think he is well focused for a tilt at the Premiership and won't be going any day soon.

In most cases, the "unwanted distractions" you speak of really only distract the supporters in the end. Otherwise the club, as a professional organisation, continue onward understanding that delayed contract negotiations does not explicitly mean someone is thinking of leaving. 

It is abundantly clear that he is fully invested in the club, and if he puts off contract negotiations till later in the year to leverage his contract worth, then good on him. He deserves that autonomy. 

Relax, its only November and Goody is going nowhere - I'd bet the farm on it.

It's quite possible that we could be struggling mid-year for a number of reasons other than the coach, but he will enviably bear the brunt of scrutiny.  Just listen to PJ's podcast and he is also quite conscious that there could be some speed bumps still to encounter on the road to ultimate sucess.

Would also agree that alot of the noise would just be media driven fugazi (as Goodwin would put it), but it might not be helpful to have all that around if we are say for instance trying to resign existing and/or trying to attract other players to join the team and/or it as much as the club would say that the noise was being ignored, it would still be somewhat there as a distraction none the less.

As I stated in my original post, it sounds like the club are working on an extension to Goody's contract, and based on everything the man himself has outwardly projected to date, I don't have huge concerns, will just be glad when it's in the bag.

Richmond dipped to 13th after 3 years of making finals, before winning a flag. Hardwick was riding the players too hard & evidently he realised or was made aware of it, made some coaching and cultural changes. Football approach was simplified, players started enjoying the game and boom - flag.

Pies after slowly going backwards for Six years under Buckley, as he was too hard, changed his approach, Nick Maxwell influenced the culture, players started to enjoy playing and they got within 45 seconds of a flag.

Melbourne players evidently very happy with Goodwin, shows in continued improvement and with a bit of luck will go close 2019 or 2020! 

Sounds like club will extend him before 2019, he has been part of developing the right culture, it would be hard to see him leaving if he gets signed up for a 2-3 year extension.

It’s his club. As if he’d leave.

That said, sign him up for another 5 years please.

Sign him for 5 years?

Perhaps not a leap of faith but an act of faith. 

These days 5 years is a long time in most employment fields. 

However, most of the top coaches have been in their jobs for 5 or more years. 

So signing Goodwin for 5 years would appear not to be a big risk if you rate him as a good coach and feel confident that the team is on an upward trajectory. 

A more conservative approach to appoint him for less than 5 years is perhaps safer but sends a different and less positive endorsement of the coach and the direction of the team. 

Having said all that, if the relationship between Coach and Board remains strong the contract issue and duration should not be a  matter for conflict or disharmony. 

Also, it seems that today, footy contracts are fluid and flexible  or in plain speak, don’t mean much. 

Barring an absolute disaster in 2019 you would expect Goodwin to be around for some time, so extending his contract for 5 years would probably not be a big risk.

It would be a vote of confidence in the coach that would be reinforcing for both coach and players. 

Also, it would maintain the current perception that the footy club is strong, harmonious and going places. That transformation of public thought and speak is important to the clubs development and the way it views itself.
