Funny you say that.  I nearly wrote 3 down, 3 to go!  But a lingering tinge of MFCSS stopped me - you know the counting chickens thing...

...but I'm with you all the way FF!

No such mfcss here haha

I'm cured ?

I loved seeing the former players there. Jeff White posted a opicture with his son at the game, the wizz was there, im sure many others were there to.

Goody was just on SEN. He is flying to perth because he said he has done so over the years just to see different finals matches. I wonder if he is thinking I better go and have a look in case we win next week.

He and a few other coaches were at the Thursday night game

Overall, the umpiring for both teams was quite poor.

However, watching the game from the boundary (I normally sit up top), it was amazing too see up close the amount of leniency Ablett, Selwood and Dangerfield get from the umpires.

As a result, the amount of staging for free kicks by these players (Scott Selwood and Menzel too) was ridiculous.

Jordan Lewis just said on 3AW, the crowd last night was in the top 3 crowds he’s ever played in front of. He said the noise and support for us was phenomenal.

There's a moment in the first quarter where Scott Selwood leads into someone's hip with his head, (rightly) doesn't get a free, then stops and looks at the umpire whilst the play carries on around him.

He's worse than Joel. Absolute [censored].

It’s probably been mentioned already somewhere  but I’m wondering if most of the boys went to the same barber during the week. Prime time and a lot of crew cuts.

Blame the coach.  It's hard to tell the players to just carry on, stop appealing for frees and whinging when they know you are doing just that in the coaches box.

If it goes Cats, Hawks, Pies, Tigers, that will be pretty much the perfect 4 opponents.

Breaking through the 2 teams who have given us the most pain through our dark years, then a preliminary final vs our ancient foe. Then a GF vs the defending champions. You couldn't script that better, and there's no 4 teams I'd like to beat more than them if we could do it.

One week at a time though…

What a night.

Our pressure was as god as any side's has been all year. We were tackling hard and they knew it, some of their players were just avoiding contact all night (see, e.g., Ablett).

The second quarter felt like the Port Adelaide or Sydney game again, wasting opportunities and then seeing our opponent take it down the other end and kick a goal. But we held them at bay largely, including through the third when they lifted, and we put them away in the fourth. Goodwin mentioned the belief we gained from the West Coast win, and I'm sure that includes how we fought back after they took the lead. I reckon the days of us not believing in ourselves are firmly disappearing.

I thought Harmes was incredible last night. His development this year has been as important to our improvement as any other factor, IMO. He does defensive jobs but burns his opponent the other way.

Weideman is going to be a star for this club. I didn't think we'd see that sort of performance from him this soon, but he clearly now belongs. His tackle on Dangerfield was delicious.

Frost did well on Hawkins IMO. Hawkins got into it when we allowed him to lead up into space. His two marks in the third were both a failure by the defence to plug the hole in front of him.

I've seen a few posts about VDB. At the game I thought he was our worst by a mile. Yes, he tackled a lot, but so did pretty much every other player and I thought he made more mistakes than anyone else. Might have just been me though.

And finally, I've been to plenty of games with big crowds but whenever Melbourne is involved, we're usually dwarfed by Collingwood/Richmond/Essendon supporters. But to be at a 91,000+ crowd where 80% of us were Melbourne supporters was surreal.

Here's the thing about VDB. He's probably the worst handballer of all time. Seriously, so bad. He's not a great kick either. But his tackling in a tight congested game makes him worth it. He did give away two goals though from turnovers. However, his tackling has the capacity to lift him out of our bottom 6.

The big skipper was there as well :)

How good is it to hear the commentators drooling over OUR top players. It's delicious. Did anyone else hear King say after the game that our back line has averaged the least points against over the past 9 games?

What a night people! Finally made it to the post match thread after a ‘bit’ of celebration.

It was great to be back! Walking into the G and just seeing a big crowd, two Victorian clubs fans everywhere, this is what footy is all about and we have missed it for way too long! Haven’t seen that much red and blue for a very long time!

The game - We came out breathing fire! That can not be overstated. We were ready for this contest and when Petracca nailed that kick to T-Mac and he goaled you could see how big it was! Coming from the clouds was Sam ‘Choofta’ Weideman who may have surprised the general public a little more than us who have seen his progress. In my opinion was in the top 2 on the ground.

Clarry and Brayshaw - What you see is what you get. Many times we’ve seen promising young talents go to water in their first attempt at finals but these guys went about their business as usual. Mate thought Clarry was a little quiet but every time you think that look up and realise he had 30 disposals and 18 contested!

Jack Viney - The talisman. Is there anyone with more heart and soul in this competition than Jack Viney right now? A touch off with match fitness but was imposing and had 11 tackles! Including a nice throwback to Rd 1 2015 in the centre square on Ablett! Seriously, G Ablett has to be scared of this guy and I wouldn’t blame him! And more seriously, who the hell doesn’t want Jack in their side!

Max Gawn - What can you say? He’s been doing it all year! Some might have had their doubts going into a finals match but he took apart an inexperienced ruckman. Great game.

Backline - Outstanding. Pressured Cats forwards all night and forced them wide at every opportunity. I expected Hawkins to get off the chain a couple of time but Frosty did the job! Jordan Lewis, this is what he was brought here for. Intercept marking king and back to his ‘3rd man in’ best at contests getting a fist on it and killing it. Christian Salem continued his great form, I’m so glad he’s arrived and is so important now.

The rest - No passengers tonight. T-Mac clunked them, Nibbler worked his socks off as usual, AVB continues to surprise with his worth to the team. It’s hard to believe he’s only in his 5th game back after a very long lay off. Melksham, Hibberd ah I love them all! Not many bigger roars then after Jones kicked that one in the 4th!

Everything from here on in is just gravy now. The season is a success. We get another game of finals experience to get into these guys now! Love this club like anything and wouldn’t trade it for the world. And I love you all as well ❤️

Drink it in man!

We rose to the occasion and were far too good. and fantastic to see our crowd was bigger than the night before's! Only empty seats I could see were right up next to the scoreboard where presumably you can't see the whole ground.

Our last two games had us primed perfectly in every way. Theirs, the opposite.

Second q, they were close to outright panic.

After 1/4 time their game was all about nullifying us. That's partly why we were so off beam in our goal kicking. (Same why they were so bad too -- pressure.) But there was bugger all in their game about scoring themselves. It was more or less hoping that Hawkins would kick a bag. Captain Selwood saw off that threat.

Watching Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw, Harmes conversing and geeing each other up before ballups. At the start of the year, who would have picked this 4 as our starting midfield?

Ablett looks like a footballer dismembered by mad scientists and sewn back together, badly. The "holy trinity" experiment has failed. He was in their team for finals success and it counted for nothing. He is like a Lewis or Vince gone one year too many. Still has his footy brain, knows where to go, what to do with it, but can't quite pull it off any more.

A little tacker next to me stood on his seat and sang the song at the top of his voice each time all the way through. Felt very happy for him.

This. In all my 39 years have I never seen (or noticed) the enthusiasm and connection between Melbourne players when goals are kicked... it's almost like they're not just stoked for the team...but genuinely, genuinely stoked for the individual that reaped the rewards. There is clearly so much love and connection at the club...

Has someone got a clip of Jetta smashing Selwood at 4.30 mark of the 1st?

I'm on to my second replay!  2nd & 3rd quarters certainly a lot more enjoyable without the stress of worrying about costly misses

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
