the thing I don't get is Freo get little or no advantage from the umps over there.  Do WC fans cheer louder?

the stats shown a few weeks ago were an absolute disgrace and the media seems to accept the umps would be influenced by fans cheering?!?  what is going on, is this professional sport?  call what you see.  why don't the Tiges have this advantage with 70K at the G each week?

blatent cheating

That’s why I was hoping for ‘Look At Me Razor’, can’t believe I’m typing it.

50,000 fans screaming ‘Ball’ and Razor crossing his arms to spite them.

What really gets me is not only the discrepancy, but the where and when.  Gifted frees to get them out of trouble from the back line, or even worse, cheapies one kick from goal.  We will get a few 'marks as frees' (coulda paid the mark, but awarded a soft free instead), and some evener uppers on the wings.  We wont be dealing with a 'Dangerwood/Dusty factor', but only crowd influence and expectation that the Eagles are #2 on the ladder.  I expect them to get longer to dispose of the ball, have much bigger backs and longer necks, have the ability to handpass one handed and to make minimal illegal contact with Melbourne players.

After square up, 26-14 in the frees.  Costing us 3.1

Pretty concerned. I can definitely see us getting the raw end of the stick. Can only hope its not to the levels of the Port game, that was a complete tire fire.

Oh yes we will. It is called shuey. He is a direct replica of Selwood.

The other problem that no one has touched on is what if that tird Nicholls is one of the umps. Can the same umpire do the same team twice in a row ?

We are Nicholls free this weekend. Listed umpires are above.

Nicholls. What a c u next Tuesday. His doesn’t even try to hide his bias against us. He should be banned from ever umpiring another Melbourne game. Not that that would ever happen.

...After all, it is Sunday; one could hope that the Sabbath is observed regarding truth, justice and the rights of the downtrodden? Even from the Green Snot Goblins.

How about just dropped.

I can't understand why the afl doesn't pay them as professionals and drop them when they are crap.

Attract better people to do it and weed out the numptys

These are the non-playing aspects of the game that we have endured and now come to expect from our beloved competition and acknowledged AFL interests.

Free kicks v WCE in recent years at WA, favoring WCE

2017--- 27-16

2016--- 22-19

Don't forget the 23 - 2 at half time a few years ago. Can't remember the year but that was clearly the low point.

I think that was 2016 before they evened up from memory.

Some research while waiting for the final squad. Total free kick count against us in the last two years against West Coast over there is 49. Shuey has been awarded 9 of them. A percentage of 18.36.

Also one of the umpires from the 2016 game is officiating on Sunday. That Hosking guy.

Stevic also good.

The Footballistics book released a couple of months ago analyses the 'noise of affirmation' and it is real. Furthermore, it is the single largest source of home ground advantage in the AFL (as it is in most sports, it turns out: see Russia's performance in the World Cup as a neat piece of anecdotal evidence). It leads to an average of 1-2 goals advantage per game to the home side against an interstate club. The effect is severely diminished when two clubs from the same state play each other, as the crowd noise is more even. To further prove the point, the effect is greatest in WA and SA where they still get highly partisan crowds for the derbies.

The greatest concern is that that AFL umpring department refuse to acknowledge it. If they were to acknowledge it exists they could coach the umpires on strategies to deal with it.

Until the AFL can get it's rules into order, umpiring will continue to weighted toward subjectivie decision making, as opposed to objective decision making, subjectivity in turn is influenced by external factors such as the crowds screaming for free's to be paid etc. If our rules were more defined and clear cut, you eliminate or at least reduce the bias that occurs in games.

Because he's doing exactly what the AFL want, he's following orders.

The umpires are receiving instructions over their headsets, hence the increasing number of slow/late calls. There was 1 instance last week with Nicholls, where Clarry was tackled and Nicholls called play on and waved his arms after the ball came free. A second later, and nothing had changed, he blows the whistle and calls holding the ball. What changed?

Somebody else made that call.

They can't get simple things right, like kicks that go 15 metres. There is no chance they will do anything about home town umpiring any time soon. But as you say, first they have to acknowledge the problem.

So now they're undermining the on field umps? Way to go, AFL. That'll increase the poise and confidence of the guys out on the ground like no-one's biz.

How not to run an umpires department, playing out in real life before our eyes.

I will bet it is the same this week as last week with the ball only going less than 10 meters. Sydney got away with it so many times it was unbelievable.

Is all 3 Vic umpires a signal we might be getting the 4 points this week?
