Weid coming 12th in leading goal kickers with 23 from just 9 games.

Leader at 36 and most above him have played 15 games.

Also looks to be the only player to have kicked 7 in a game so far.

I had not noticed that Richmond have played one more game than us and yet we are on equal points.

Could be a top of the ladder end to the season.

Sandringham are 11th in the 15 team comp. With our fast reducing list of MFC talent and the need for a carry over emergency this could be a tough game.

Richmond play Williamstown who are fifth at present so that is no walk over either.

Remaining games for Casey are: Hawks, and Williamstown whereas Richmond's only game after this weekend is Frankston. Richmond have a 10% better percentage which will probably see them on top if Casey drop a game on the run home.

With Oskar Baker’s injury, there are 17 MFC players remaining and available for selection in the squad tonight but once the final team is announced another 4 players go out. Then there’s the carry over emergency leaving 12 AFL listed players in the Casey team this week.

My tip for the four to go up are Vince, ANB, JKH and J Wagner who is the replacement for J Smith. I favour the Weid as the emergency over Pedo.

It would appear Casey will have a distinct advantage in this game, given Sandy seem to be planning on having only 17 players on the field (given they have named no-one in one of the back pockets...!  LOL)

KC, always appreciate your reports. What are your thoughts as to the effect of the removal of the VFL reserves on the development of players like Filipovic?

It seems as though he may have benefited from playing a full game in the ruck in the reserves each week, rather than a few minutes here and there in the seniors.

I'm of the view that Melbourne needs an experienced backup from Gawn, which makes it even harder to develop young rucks.

It was interesting to read about St Kilda striking an agreement with another VFL club so that Lewis Pearce could play full games in the ruck as he was always behind either Hickey or Longer in their own VFL side.

Agree that MFC needs an experienced back up for Max but unless that person has a second string to his bow, he isn't going to be playing much footy at the highest level. You would need to recruit a player who is prepared to play that stand in role as Jake Spencer did the last couple of years.

Lachie Filipic has had his chances but I'm not sure that he is going to develop into an AFL player based on this year. Big men take time but he hasn't shown enough for me.

Agree with this part. Which means you need to look for a state league ruckman or someone who's currently 3rd in line at their club, and coming to Melbourne would essentially be a promotion for them.

Someone like Darcy Cameron or Tom Campbell would be ideal IMO.

I agree that Mitch Hannan is the likely carry over emergency for the MFC.

Normally, I would be concerned about the low number of MFC aligned players in the team but with the likes of Corey Wagner, Lockhart, Hutchins, Munro, Machaya, Gent etc. the VFL contingent is a lot stronger than in the past and in good form. They should at least provide the extra depth for a win today.

That said, Cam Pedersen has been an important component of the team structure to date and his presence will be missed.

Time for Keilty to step up and show he is capable of selection. It was around this time last year he had one of his best games for that season against Sandy so fingers crossed he does the same.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
