How is Baker clearly not ready his form has been just as good if not better than JKH in the VFL?

I don't think JKH has necessarily been in better form then Baker. I think its more about the role they want to fill, based around forward/half forward pressure which JKH at the very least provided last week.

With Baker I understand he has speed and has strung together a few decent games at Casey but you can see he is still very raw and needs to work on his defense and positioning. We saw what happened last time we brought in a 19/20 yr old too early and I think against a fired up doggies outfit Oscar might get a bit lost on the wide open MCG. Listening to Rawlings on the podcast last week he still sounds like he's developing well but not there yet.

I was surprised to see JKH selected.

Baker is not an endurance runner yet. Would have to be an impact player off the bench. Where as JKH will look faster in the final quarter and the time on period. I do like the aggression he may bring to the game.

Jeez Dom Tyson must be in the doghouse. He is now behind JKH in the pecking order.

Tyson plays inside mid.  JKH plays HFF/Wing/mid etc..

Nothing to do with pecking order and all to do with suitable positions.

One thing in Kennedy's favour...he might be running faster than many others..  in the final QTR

That Bulldogs side would have just about the worst collection of talls I've seen for a long time. If we lose it certainly won't be due to their ruck/key position dominance.

He has been in good form I'll back him to do well.

I sense he's building a strong 'tank', for spread.

Pace is one thing but building a tank and being able to continually spread, run two ways and make repeated efforts is a much better weapon to have.

If JKH has built the tank enough where he can do these things than he needs to grab the opportunity

Good luck JKH

JKH needs to be played (mostly) in the forward 50 if he is to have any impact IMHO.  If we play him off a wing he will likely struggle defensively.

Think we could have gone Bugg as another alternative as well but what you gain with forward pressure you lose in finishing in front of goal.  Almost the reverse of JKH!  Either way, playing JKH (mostly) forward releases Spargo to play a higher role (more of the time vs forward) allowing him to rotate with Melk and possibly Tracc, allowing JKH to play in his more suited position.  Knows where the goals are if he can find some space.

I have yet to see JKH bring any sort of decent sustained pressure at AFL level when we haven't got the ball and playing him higher up will leave us exposed on the counter.  I might well be wrong of course and his defensive side might have improved but for mine he is only dangerous offensively,  closer to goals (sub 40 meters or thereabouts).

Left mostly in a forward role he just might snag 3 to 4 and be quite damaging IF he can bring form similar to that shown recently at VFL level and up it a notch against the big dawgs.  If he goes into coasting mode when we don't have the ball i will spew up!  Let's hope he has found a defensive side.

Is Kent injured still?

No....2 games with Casey now.  Still looks a little off AFL level in terms of match fitness etc and hasn't really shown the form needed .....yet.  Hopefully he can find his mojo as he is one of our more accurate shots at goal when he finds form.  Something sadly lacking among too many of late.

I hope JKH plays well like I do every Dees player just not sold on him. I thought he was a certain delist candidate.

Kennedy-Harris' clean ball use in atrocious conditions last week was amazing.

He won't play the Stretch role, but instead I think he'll be used as a pressure forward inside 50.

It's his last roll of the dice, so will be interesting to see if he can reinvent himself in a small forward role.

Who plays Stretch's role Harmes maybe?

Fritsch, Brayshaw, Jones, Neale-Bullen, Harmes, and Spargo who links well.

There are a few players who can rotate outside.

I don't mind the Kennedy-Harris selection if he plays a tackling/forward pressure role.  I'm far less enamoured if he's been chosen for the Stretch role.  But I don't expect that to be the case.

Agree, that with JKH in, it releases Spargo. My guess Spargo will play as a mid.

JKH does love tackling and hurting in tackles but will he work hard enough to get to them? His other problems could be his decision making and being a team player.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
