Congratulations to them.

- Harmes 2 years till 2020

Harmes:  “I didn’t consider any other options, even though my manager spoke to a few other clubs, but I wanted to stay as a Dee, as I was a Melbourne supporter as a kid".

- Wagner 1 year for 2019

Wagner: “I wanted to stay at Melbourne. I’ve got some really good friends here and I’m very happy here, so it was great to sign.”

Given they both started as rookies they have done very well to earn several contract renewals.

In no way can I see OMc being trade bait, and I'd highly doubt Brayshaw would be either.

Agreed. No chance they are trade bait.

Good deals for both as well. Harmes has quietly been having a good year, while Wagner is handy for depth on a one year deal.

Brayshaw May not be trade bait but their hand maybe forced with this one

Yes I'm surprised also.

Q: Are OMac and Brayshaw trade bait? (thinking outside the box)

Trade bait for ...?

Can't see us trading in better players than them for the positions they play.

A higher draft pick perhaps...not sure how that will help us...if we lose OMac and Gus.

A player/s.

Who out of OOC players could we trade?

I didn't say it'd happen, just that it could, every player is tradeable.

Last year we set the precedent to trade out player/s in contract.  So not sure our trade options are only OOC players.  The lack of love for Tyson, Garlett, Frost, and Hunt (when not injured) suggests they might be the trade bait that would have some currency.

Agree every player is tradeable but still not sure what type of player/s we would be going after that justify giving up OMac and Gus.

...this might be a discussion best in another thread...

Good to see Harmes locked away for a couple of years. I'm not a fan of Wagner particularly, but a one year deal is fine. There are about ten players to move on this year, before Wagner's spot on the list is in jeopardy.

Thinking positively,

It is great to see Harmes with a new contract. The kid has go in him and will mature into a dependant member of our team. Wagner deserves to be around as he has shown that he has plenty to offer.   He is a little unlucky given that  he has to battle with Lewis  and Vince for a spot on the backline. He will receive his chance in the not too distant future. Happy to support them both.

With a sooner rather than later l am hoping for Angus to sign because he will be so valuable a member that he has plenty of scope to do better. Let's hope.

I'd consider Wagner very fortunate to get a contract renewal, as he is among the bottom number of players' at our club, clearly the FD see this differently, but IMO he was a candidate to de-list come years end.

Harmes, well he plays his role, but he fails to inspire me, as he is among the first to go missing when things get tough. He is a depth player at most for mine (which we need).

both players off the rookie list

both players only 2 years into their AFL career.

I hope they both continue to improve

Harmes’ best is very good, however he’s yet to show that against strong teams.  His performances are somewhat endemic of our whole team at this stage- looks strong, fast and assured against weaker teams, but struggles for time and space against the stronger ones.

Personally, I’ve never been a Wagner fan, but the football department have shown time and time again that they are.  He’s got all the physical and athletic attributes to be a contributor, but I’m not sure he has it between the ears...

Good luck to them both!

I don't mind Wagner, always had more time for him than a lot of others have, but if he does get a game I think it has to be as high half back and the slowest defender. Given Vince is nearly certainly done at the end of this year and Lewis shouldn't be in the side either we will have plenty of spots in the team/on the list to fill so I'm not concerned about giving him another year. I think he can kick, mark and read the play at AFL standard and has good endurance, just isn't quick or overly strong so can get caught out. Playing up the ground with some athletes around him and he can do the job.

I also think there's a strong chance they draft his brother based on his VFL form and attributes so far this year so keeping Josh over some other bottom of the list players makes sense.

Harmes - still not convinced by him on the wing, but he has physical attributes to play well on ball, at half forward and to me at half back. If he's 22nd picked we'll have a very good team. How much his decision making can improve in this next contract will determine if he plays for a very long time after or not. 2 year deal is interesting, maybe we only wanted to commit at good money for 2 years, or maybe his manager is chasing a big contract and trying again in 2 years.

Wagner's extension shows that we are still waiting for someone to come through and take the Lewis/Vince roles.

While there are a few at VFL level it is apparent that even fewer are as they would say bashing down the door.

Hopefully someone surprises.
