MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 16

I apologize in advance for mentioning this, but while I still think Weid will make it, it appears we have let a future champion in Curnow, who we were considering at the time, go, by selecting Weid. While Weid is still struggling to cement a place in the side, Curnow has better stats than Jono Brown at the same age and is being hailed as a future champion. Not sure how many champions we have and he was there for the taking.

Jesse, Tom and Charlie, a seriously good key forward trio.

Yes I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but just saying and I did apologize at the outset.

No need to apologize Mr. Leg. One will play 250 games and the other 50 no guessing which is which.

My perception of Weed will change considerably when the ball starts sticking to his mitts. He's never going to be the mobile/agile player that Curnow is so our best hope for Weed is that we sort out our shizenhausen forward entries so he can get a better crack at the more conventional leading forward role.

On Jeff. I only saw the first quarter last week but saw him lay 3 tackles, including one in the defensive 50, and a a 50+ metre sprint to lay a bump resulting in our first goal. Perhaps this is more what the footy department were after.

That's good to hear. I only watched the second half of that game and was really disappointed in Jeffy's effort and application.

At one point he chose not to not to go to a contest and Bugg came from behind him to jump on the ball and force a ball up. There was at least one other contest he totally squibed. When the game was there to be won, from the senior dees players it was Vince who stood up. Jeffy was ineffectual.

For context here are his stats for his VFL games since being dropped.  7 tackles is pretty good last week - no doubt that was KPI for him, so perhaps i am being a bit unfair on his effort in that game but really they are not a particularly compelling set of numbers. 7 goals in seven games , one of which we won by 100 odd points games - is a pass mark at best for player who averaged 2 goals a game at AFL level last year.

An interesting stat is that in his very first game after being dropped he laid 7 tackles in the games against the cats (and as it turns out had his most disposals and VFL dream team points) and didn't get a recall.

  •  1 goal 2 behinds 7 kicks 2 handballs 9 disposals 1 mark 7 tackles 65 dream team points
  •  1 goal 7 kicks 5 handballs 12 disposals 1 marks 4 tackles 56 dream team points
  •  2 goals 2 behinds 9 kicks 8 handballs 17 disposals 2 marks 5 tackles 84 dream team points
  •  1 goal 1 behind 9 kicks 7 handballs 16 disposals 2 marks 1 tackles 59 dream team points
  •  1 goal 1 behind 7 kicks 11 handballs 18 disposals 4 tackles 63 dream team points
  •  1 goal 2 behinds 12 kicks 7 handballs 19 disposals 1 mark 4 tackles 84 dream team points
  •  12 kicks 7 handballs 19 disposals 3 marks 7 tackles 87 dream team points (v cats)

When   the only good games you can play are against Coburg then your future is not bright.

This.

Hopefully the nuffs read this.

I am assuming the nuffs you so eloquently refer to are posters questioning the logic of Jeffy being picked. Which of course includes me.

Not sure why me and my fellow nuffs should read  a post from a fella  who saw one quarter of football and noted that Jeffy applied a bit of pressure. Is that supposed to be evidence his recall is justified?

That might satisfy your level of analysis STMJ but not mine.

This nuff will take on board the feedback from of regular VFL watchers whose opinion i respect (eg Drunkn167), the stats as listed above and what i ave seen of Jeffys VFL form (as limited as it is).

I for one am happy Jeffy is back. I was unhappy he was dropped (but it did give Spargo a run). And obviously i have no idea what the internal KPIs were he had to meet to get a game again - maybe x number of games with more than 5 tackles, better application at training, skin folds - who knows?

But i maintain on performance alone it is hard to understand why he gets a call up.

By the by there is a certain irony in you having pot shot at nuffs implying you have greater footy knowledge than said nuffs.

For those with short memories Jeffy in the latter part of last season requested time off for a personal bereavement, when he returned his form was quite ordinary. This year he has had one good game, that's one good game in nearly 12months. I fear he's either lost it or he's mentally checked out, it's a big risk picking him. For the record I hope he has a blinder but I can't see it happening.

i also hope he has a blinder and returns to form from there on in. We really miss his sparkle up forward.

But you make a good point. It is long time since he played well week in, week out.

Maynard is a delist.  We have 15 of his type, even if he does learn how to play footy.

Hahaha just because you're in the football department doesn't mean you're any good.  Have you thought that every MFC Football Department over the last 12 years have known what they were doing, because they must if they spend so much time with the players?   Spose Neeld knew best too did he?

Goodwin's selection mistakes have cost us 3 games this year.  Blind freddy could see Maynard and Wagner did nothing in the pre-season to justify a game against Geelong in what was an 8 point game.  The teams we selected against Port and St Kilda have been the biggest, slowest sides you could select, and to not play a quick crumbing forward when Richmond play a dozen of them raises some serious questions over the football department.

They may not be any good but they would know more than anyone posting on this site

The way the ball is bombed into our forward line I’m surprised that Goodwin didn’t go with a couple of smalls weeks ago.

It’s just a band aid solution to our real issues of inefficient inside 50’s in my opinion but I hope it works. Need our big forwards clunking and converting.

This goes along way to seeing our forwards clunking the long or low ball. Removing Weid and Hannan means no more seeing Hogan and TMac fly in a pack with two others. Hannan did it continually last week when we need him at the base.

Were we into Curnow? His drink driving escapades sealed the deal on our No [censored] Policy implementation. Imagine if he turned into a Yarran or Jurrah right now. We're in a decent and conservative position now with Weeds development and did not need to take a massive 'culture' risk on a player with where we were at the time. I've been guilty of hindsight on Curnow v Weeds last year, but i'll trust the FD for this in the longrun.

A friend knew Parrish well and was rapt his team, the Bombers,  took Parish, and couldn't understand how he slipped past Melbourne, depressing me no end.

Turned out OK, so as above, need to trust someone I guess. In the Oliver case  a brilliant outcome.

Mate, you’re a bit of a chump poster on this site. Quite ironic really the way you rubbish others contributions and shitcan the site in general.

You’ve posted a little bit about actual footy so I’m thinking you might be able to contribute more at some stage.

Should I wait in hope?

Yes the no problematic player policy has come at some cost and it is not just us by the way, a lot of clubs have been gun shy of problem players but we had the draft picks that count and went past Hurley, Dusty, Darling and Curnow for behavioural questions. Oh well thank god we are conservative and let’s hope the Weid fires up.

Then again, it was the likes of Sylvia and others, the dudes who wouldn't run the Tan etc who made Melbourne Footy club a halfway house for recalcitrant youths twixt the MCG and Pentridge...

I'm happy those days are gone. At the same time I really sympathise with the blokes who didn't make it. Our society is cut throat and one dimensional. My heart goes out to the Jarrahs, the Sylvias, the guys who tried ....

No Fyfe, no Sandilands. This is a very winnable game. Dockers by 37.

Agree, I had dockers by 36 now Fyfe is out, was 68 before that.

In all seriousness, we should not lose to the Freo rabble, they were pitiful last week and we should pump them. But I’m always wary of an injured Ross Lyon side.

Weather will be nicer up there than in Melb today.
