jane02 3,795 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Since the QB game, I have had this sinking feeling that the season is over for us. Its really sad - I hope we can turn thing around but I just cannot see it happening. 1 Quote

I would've actually taken the Saints scoring from every second entry - they went at 58%! I looked back at their games before GC and they were generally at about 33-39% for scores per inside 50. 58% today! In most games at the G in the last two years we've been too easy to score against. The opposition break from our forward 50 and just carry the ball uncontested into their forward line and score. There is a flaw in our system or personnel at the G. We don't need to change our whole style but we do need to make some adjustments in either the system or personnel playing the system - when a side like St Kilda can do what they did today you know there are problems. I just read that too - incredible. It was 39% the last time we played them. It may well be as simple as the G's dimensions. We just seem to get beaten the same way every time. Quote

As I left my seat in the QB game, a big ugly Pie supporter was clapping into my face, i just stopped and stared at him and thought, "thank God I am not you". I then left, as a king hit was a likely result for me if I said or did anything. Sorry you copped an idiot. He is probably related to the one I had. 2 Quote

Can anyone else confirm that the MFC put an official “please explain” request into the AFL umpiring department last week after the Port Game? If it’s true it explains the biases performance today from those maggots. I hope we go again because we seem to never win the 50 50 decisions. Not saying we didn’t play well but there were 6 decisions today that gave them goals/ scoring opportunities directly influenced by the maggots. 2 Quote

Nasher 33,684 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 His main point in the post match today was that we failed to run defensively. That we’re capable of doing it (ref: the 5 in a row) but it’s not ingrained yet. There was no double speak in there at all. It’s not a bad quite as exciting as “structure! Selection! Drinking own bath water! Team balance! Another failed season!”, but the message is there for anyone willing to stop thinking they’re the senior coach for long enough to listen. 2 Quote
Gunna’s 2,107 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 The agenda doesn’t stop with two articles on afl.com.au trying to rub Oliver out for the tackle just before half time. One - his head didn’t hit the ground. Two - he got up and played the rest of the game out. 1 Quote

Bonkers 994 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Goodwin and the brains trust need to have a good hard look at themselves. The same issues that have been costing us games all year still haven't been addressed. We are the easiest team to transition against in the AFL. I actually feel sorry for the likes of Petty, Oscar, Hibberd & Jetta today when the ball is coming in at the speed it does every game. The midfield is full of ball winners with not enough 2 way run. The defence is getting sliced up as they have barely any protection in front of them to slow the speed of ball coming into the D50. Whilst Petty may come good I think it's too early for him on today's evidence. Frost is most likely not the long term option but I think we have to lump him in the backline at the moment. We don't have much of a choice. Stretch, Spargo and Baker should all be considered for selection next week. I'm reluctant to say Vince but he would have been better than Tyson today. 2 Quote
Demon Dynasty 17,165 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 29 minutes ago, titan_uranus said: What an absolute disgrace. Mistakes made at selection - Petty clearly not ready for AFL, no crumber, too many talls/marking forwards. We carry too many players who routinely underperform when we're losing: ANB, Harmes and Hannan are the biggest culprits. Our gameplan has been worked out. Opponents drop a number (or two) behind the ball. Our forward line becomes clogged. We win plenty of it in the middle but we continually turn it over at half-forward because we're outnumbered and there's no plan. We then can't spread fast enough on wide grounds like the G and we get exposed out the back. It's all too common and all too predictable, but Goodwin's stubbornness hasn't worked out how to fix it. We can't keep having massive inside 50 counts but failing to score and then conceding goals and scores from every second opponent entry. It's not a sustainable way of playing. I don't think we're going to win enough games to make the finals, but if we do, then we will have beaten Geelong in Geelong, Adelaide in Adelaide, West Coast in Perth or Sydney. To do that, we're going to have to have improved, quite a bit on where we are now. Harsh on Harmes. Easily in our top 5 today. Hannan & ANB tend to be incapable of pushing back when the tide's against us. Harmes, Tyson & Tracc in the same team however, makes us turtlesk and is a huge error by Goody. Spargo (or Bugg or Jeffy) in for Tyson every day of the week. 1 Quote

I think ‘effort’ is a non-binary thing though. The players probably don’t even realise that they’re not working hard enough in the heat of the moment. That’s where good leadership is critical. I remember Gary Ablett Jr making a comment once that in his first few seasons he always thought he was working his arse off until he one day found another gear and realised he hadn’t been. Obviously there are a number of players yet to find that gear. We can only hope they do. 2 Quote
Mazer Rackham 14,972 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 We really gave the Saints a football lesson. That is: what happens when one team does the basics right and the other team doesn't? We committed every football sin. Playing from behind. Giving them plenty of space. When we had it seemed congested and no one was free. When they had it they had free players everywhere in plenty of space. When we had it, we kicked it over our teammate's head or to his side or generally put him under pressure. Too many flying for marks, spoiling each other. I understand we have a forward coach. Looks like he's been out for 4 to 6 himself. Maybe he's been coaching the Socceroos. They also can't finish. Yes, the umps were their usual atrocious inconsistent arbitrary selves but that only seemed a factor because we were so deperate for goals. At half time 15 players had less than 10 possessions. Including Lewis (6) Viney (6) Tyson (3) Our defending was the worst seen since the Neeld days. Everywhere on the ground. Made it look like a training run for the Saints. A team that thought it might be top 2 material, was sh@t on by the Saints who can't kick more than 60 points. Goddammit that was awful. Now one thing which I picked up on in the Port game but I am not sure if it's real or if it is my imagination. Against Port our big forwards could not get anywhere near the ball and it seemed like they were being scragged and held off the ball. But on TV it's hard to tell. Third Q in this game Hogan got a free & goal for being interfered with. Is that (the interference) happening to him and McDonald over and over or is it my fevered imagination. I can't accept that they can not get near the ball under ordinary circumstances. I saw a number of times our guys in general being monstered off the ball. On the other side of the coin, I do accept that our delivery into 50 does not help. And Hogan and McDonald flying for the same ball is just stupidity. 3 Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 (edited) I also thought the body language said it all for Melbourne today. A lot of slumped shoulders and little passion shown. When we kicked one of those goals to bring it back to 15 in the last they weren’t getting around each other etc. Didn’t show it for mine. Edited July 1, 2018 by layzie 4 Quote
