I thought that the umpiring was fair and we played really well and we just couldn't finish it off.

Thats what I thought.

There's always next week.

Who gives a stuff about next week we are NOT UP TO IT !!!! NEXT!

3 blokes going out with bleeding from mouth/head in the last quarter. It would have been a miracle to hold on with shite like that going on. Enough umpire comments have been made so I won’t even bother.

It just hurts, this game should have been over at half time. Time to play natural footballers, like Petty, Garlett.

To those saying Oscar was horrible, WTF? The fifties against him? @ ridiculous. He was in the air both times the Port players marked the ball. What the fluck do you want the guy to do?

We dominated just about everything with so many players ineffectual.

Oh yeah....Fritsch is special..pity he missed that snap in the last.

Gutted....that’s all!

Proud of another loss on the big stage? Yeah, nah.

anyone who constantly calls for lewis and vince to be dropped doesn't understand how important the roles they play are for the side and we have no one else who can play their role available

people say 'jones / brayshaw / player x' can rotate through the half-back line but we are so much better off with them in the guts

i have no issues with petracca - it was bloody tough for forwards out there tonight, and everyone who thinks he's going to have a 'break out' game needs to understand he's probably always going to be a 15-25 possession, 4-7 marks, 1-3 goal a game player...tonight he had 17, 6 and 1 straight - more possessions than any other nominal forward

hogan looks completed out of sorts

On mmm they said the umps went backwards massively in the final term

@dees189227  What do you mean backwards? At one stage in the last they had paid 9 or 10 straight against us.

I was at the Dogs game 3 weeks ago and watched Hogan mark absolutely everything and just dominate. Chris Judd said on the following Monday he was the best player in the competition at the present moment.

What has happened in 2 games of football?

@At the break of Gawn 2 weeks ago they brought Pedo in. Hogan was in form when playing with Weid and then Smith.

Gutted but we will win more tha lose for the rest of the year

Oh, and Viney is back!

They emerged tonight

Thought Lewis really struggled again tonight. His time has probably come, but who comes in.

We cant forget Port averaged a full season of experience per player more than us. That’s a massive. It showed in the composure throughout.

Garlett simply has to play next week. It’s obviously every time we play a decent team. Probably could play Spargo as well.

Who'd have predicted two weeks ago that we could go from being one of only 3 contenders to struggling to stay inside the top 8? Forget about cementing the top 4, this has consecutive disaster years written all over it.

Sometimes it feels like this team never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Our record for these big stage matches is just horrific, consistently fail to show up. Have we won a single Friday night game in the last 5 years (admittedly we've probably only had a handful of them)?

You all need to take some pills and leave the umpires alone. Whilst they were ordinary they didn't lose the game for us. WE DID OURSELVES. Never seen a more dominant team for most of the game and lose it. Ollie Wines even mentioned in post match presser with Fox that they stole it. Our forward entries were pathetic and worse still our forwards other than Macca were just as bad. Plenty of soul searching for Trac, Hannan, ANB, Hogan, Harmes plus a few others. They should not be gifted games. Seriously look at Trac and Hogan at Casey next week even if it is to teach them they need to work hard at every contest and actually make a contest for their team mates.

The detractors can shove it.

That was finals football and we kept up the intensity all night.

Lost out on some equivalent umpiring calls both ways in the final quarter on opposition turf.

Super proud of the boys tonight.

Again, I view this as an important match in our development.

Edit: Cracking footy match btw. I mentioned in the match thread that I would love to see channel seven's viewership numbers after half-time. I doubt many turned off due to the 'boring' low-scoring match.

THIS.

Check the stats and report back how many contested marks Dixon, westhoff abd Marshall took? I don’t think it aligns with your perception.

We went inside 50 68 times for 7 marks.

Port went in 39 times for 10 marks.

Now this is partly because we butchered the ball, but they also have 3 big talls to crash packs in Howard (199cm), Clurey (193cm) & Westhoff (200cm) who plays both ends.

We had Oscar (196cm) and Smith (191).

I know we will be better as Petty gets older and we get Lever back, but we really need to find another option down back. Joel Smith is just not good enough to play as a second tall.

The Hogan missed snap with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter was critical. The bloke is on $800k a year and was under no pressure 20m directly in front of goal. An absolute pretender, just like Petracca.

I don't even accept the inside 50 differential  because ours shouldn't be counted as inside 50s. They are junk hacks forward by a midfield bunch always under pressure thanks to a lack of pace and class. It is easily the most unbalanced midfield in the afl.

Goodwin got what he deserved for loading up with guys like Tyson and Harmes at the expense of Spargo, Garlett and even JKH.

If we had lost by a lot I’d understand some of the comments on here but I really thought we were desperately unlucky to lose. A lot went against us.

The boys gave blood for the team tonight.

I for one are sticking with them.

Not ONE player took a backward step in a very hostile environment

Q: If only we had a good quality fast crumbing forward to bring into the side(!) playing at Casey – Could have made the difference with all the bombing inside forward 50?

(A: Garlett)

#SoMelbourne

Garlett's form in VFL has been below average. It's a tough position to get into this side. For all you know Garlett could have kicked 1 goal and been a passenger in a physical game (like he usually is in physical games). This one's not on the coaches. It's on Garlett for showing nothing when the heat was on earlier this year before he was dropped (and since).

More fundamentally if the club doesn't ask serious questions -- in the media (wear the fines) -- about the umpiring using specific examples they are not doing their job

If they do ask the media, in the media, and get fined... then they're NOT doing their job. They can send please explains to them behind closed doors. For all we know they've been doing it all year. Worked with Maxie after last year. Umpires were shocking, but I give Goody no points for being an amateur.

Lost that in the first half with so much wasted opportunity. We had them complete on toast but persisted with the long bomb inside 50 to a pack of 10 players system which NEVER works for us. Just dumb footy.

umpiring sucked bad but we lost that ourselves

Totally agree. Should have smashed them in the first half. Our long bombs cost us. The game.

Umps were a disgrace and this was the worst result of the year for me. We had the top 4 spot right there.

Jetta TMAC and Viney were inspirational.

Not sure why we dropped Spargos for Tyson

The ten marks were all in 50 to their talls  were they? You story is not stacking up my friend.

Effort fine

Umpiring deplorable

Unfortunately we'll never be more than a run of the mill side until our forwards get separation from each other and our mids start looking for targets. Bombing it in to a clump of forwards continuously is playing into the defenders hands. Surely this can't be the way our coaching staff train the team to play

Even more disappointing, our two captains lead the charge of usual suspects in this department. Dumb. So dumb.

We should have had the game in our keeping at half time

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
