Is it really too much to ask for both teams playing in Darwin to have a bye the following week?

It is a pain in the ass but if the money is right, and this inequity can be addressed then I guess it is tolerable.

But it is unfair to both teams  not to have the bye following.

I was dead against the Darwin game, but the facts are we beat a decent Port the week after in 2017, and then had a dominant second half against the Dogs this year.

We’ve handled Darwin recovery with aplomb after 9 seasons up there.

Two NT neutral games is a luxury.  We need the wins and playing at the MCG v Port v Freo v Suns v Giants etc is a better chance of winning than at NT.  The $$ are now not as critical.

we have very much over complicated what all of this NT was/is about

Its called MONEY

We whored ourselves..simple as. In destitute times we panhandled and took the first bus to Moneysville

.......and then some bright sparks/spin monkeys  tried to dress it all up as another really good idea. ( mutton dressed as lamb )

It's never been a good idea to play up there. Yes by all means  camps.,..pretend games etc etc...but to go there in the real season...as a HOME game...is again....all about the money

Surely we dont need this anymore and the tradeoffs far outweigh any gain these days.

Common sense would dictate bringing it to an amicable end.

Common sense .....hmmmmmmm

its about money....nothing to do with growing memberships...nothing to do with finding our  'roots' ....its been about money.

I agree beelzebub. Our club has sunk low. We need to restore pride.

'Melbourne' Football Club!

Travelling to away games or practices matches is okay, but not for 'home' games.

The Suns have apparently taken over our Darwin home game as of 2020.

I haven't been able to get a lot of info as yet, but seems like we will still have at least one Alice Springs game, but Gold Coast will play a "major" Victorian club (so, likely not us) as the home team from next season.

This ties in to the news already out there that the Suns have been given Darwin as a recruiting zone. Source

As well as the earlier reports of the Suns being in discussions with the NT: "GOLD Coast is in ongoing discussions with AFL Northern Territory about the possibility of forming a mutually beneficial arrangement." Source

Just the alice game is perfect. Make it against Freo every year. More winnable and less support than crows.

Great news if true.

That NT game will no doubt be transferred to Marvel rather than the MCG, but at least most of us we'll be able to see it live.

Will be up to Pert to make up for the missing revenue that the Darwin game provides, unless we play 2 Alice games a year.

History will show that the toughest road trip for most MFC supporters/members is crossing the Yarra and heading down to Docklands.

You're dead right.

Funny how thousands of VIC based MFC supporters spent in excess of $2,000 to go over to WA to watch our prelim. Yet a great deal of others (and probably a few that made that WA trip) can't even be bothered making the 'road trip' to the fringe of the central business district.

I’d feel good about it if we had other better ideas to make money. Id like the Alice game to stay. Darwin was always a crap idea but watch the suns get a bye the week after straight up.

Possibly the real reason why the MFC and GC presented to the AFL. The MFC will have to find the shortfall in the income tho’ - will the AFL stump this up?

So Gold Coast IN and West Coast OUT

Breaking news which may please many posters. Demons apparently have played their last game at Marrara and the Gold Coast Suns will instead come to Darwin from 2020. Goes with the territory re: AFL concessions to Suns for exclusive access to local recruitment?

Interesting to see any associated drop in membership numbers. I expect that some of the support by the NT government would be in buying three game or similar memberships.

Won't miss it.

Any news on which club is Port's bunny for the Shanghai massacre round?

So we lose a game that we've put a lot of time and effort into developing over the years, and the AFL are also going to give the Suns our pick 2. That seems fair

Good news.

The only team we could beat up there was Freo.

The AFL kept sending up WC and Adelaide which were ostensibly home games for them.

Will the home game be transferred to Marvel or Alice?

It does seem rough and unfair, but I'm happy to get away from the joint from a winning and recovery point of view.

How will Pert and Co address the shortfall in revenue lost?

Add Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide and West Coast Eagles? to that list BBP.

100% happy to move on from Darwin for a number of reasons. But the club decided it was worth the investment of time and resources, and to have it yanked from under us like that is absurd.

You’d think the AFL would’ve discussed the proposal with Pert and brainstormed ways that we could make up the shortfall in revenue?

The AFL want to share the pain for the mediocre clubs. The lucky SA and WA clubs must drool in anticipation of getting easy 4 points in the NT every season.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
