titan_uranus 25,255 Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 Port beat Sydney, in Sydney, in Round 1 last year. It was their only win, all year, against a top 8 side. Will be interesting to see if they can beat any other decent side in the remaining 20 rounds. 1 Quote

Edit: That was exactly my point, both Watts and Pederson played their role for the team without hitting the scoreboard or dominating the game. In modern footy having a 2nd or third tall forward who contests, sets their teammates up and tackles can be enough. I thought those in this thread who were having a crack at Jack for being a “downhill skier” or being “quiet”, were being unfair and clearly didn’t see the role he played in a great win. I used a Melbourne player who plays a similar role to the one Jack plays at Port (and did play at Melbourne) for comparison. Edited April 1, 2018 by deejammin' 1 Quote

A few of his passes into the forward line to Jessy Hogan were spot on. Though I don't really recall him clunking many yesterday, he provided a pretty good aerial contest. Hogan and Jeffy were on fire and were very enjoyable to watch. Couldn't care less how that other bloke played for Port, any more than any other player in the league. It's done move on. Go DEMONS. I don’t have a problem with Pederson, my point was even though he had low numbers he played a role for the team in a win just like Watts did, I’m not bagging him. As for talking about a bloke from another club, this is the thread dedicated to non-MFC games, there’s going to be a lot of talking about players from other clubs in here, I suggest you get over it. Go Demons! Edited April 1, 2018 by deejammin' Quote
Lucifers Hero 40,716 Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 (edited) Have to admire Hinkley's great coaching yesterday! Even when they were being outplayed, he held his nerve by keeping a kid (Dougal Howard) with 12 games experience against Buddy for the whole game. He kept another kid (Tod Marshall) with 4 games experience in the forward line who rewarded his coach with 3 goals. He then got creative and made some matching winning moves. Instead of being defensive and put players behind the ball he did the opposite and made really attacking moves: Dixon in the ruck, Boake forward which allowed Vines to come into the game. Hinkley decided to 'go small' to open up his forward line and it worked. A very refreshing change to the somewhat 'automatic' defensive strategies coaching boxes employ when the momentum is against them. That was a very good game. Lucifers Hero 40,716 Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 (edited) Its quite baffling to read all the media going on about Geelong's 'holy trinity' midfield. They are all 'star struck' or desperate for 'click bait'! Have they not noticed that Clarkson's midfield is none too shabby with Mitchell and O'Meara? I bet Chris Scott has! It will be fascinating to watch; not just the game itself but also how two mastermind coaches play their cards. Edited April 1, 2018 by Lucifer's Hero Quote

Agreed. Pedersen busts packs and pressures opposition players and by doing so creates many loose ball opportunities. A low possession count does not tell the whole story as far as he is concerned. Has the coach lost the players? They’re just not very good. Won a flag off the back of some very good pressure football but have since lost several key players. What’s their development programs like? They’ve got Boyd and Shache, number 1 and 2 draft pick key forwards running around in the Magoo’s. A few cultural issues of late would’ve set them backwards too no doubt but I don’t think Bevo is the catalyst or to blame for any of that. Quote

Two bottom of the road sides tasting success and then drinking their own bath water. Bevo lost the players last year, if it was the EPL he would be gone, bevo tasted success early, everyone was saying what a genius he is, just by it was McCartney's team that he built, that went on to win the flag, and now this is bevo's team. 1 Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,773 Posted April 2, 2018 Author Posted April 2, 2018 Hard on the television to see running patterns but on at least two occasions WCE had three players running into goal without a Bulldogs opponent. Okay I understand getting caught on the turnover etc but it smacks of over commitment when you let three or more opposition players run back against you. Interested to hear from the tacticians their thoughts on this play. Went along to see GWS v Collingwood on Saturday. GWS were the better side from a skills perspective but just couldn't get their total game going. In a radio interview Pendlebury said that they knew the Giants were a high looping handball side which gives the opposition a chance to spoil Quote
