Anyway by my reckoning we may now have five first 22 players missing for Rd 1 and there's a few yet to prove their fitnes.

1) Viney. 2) T-Mac. 3) Lewis. 4) ANB (he's still not allowed to do competitive work). 5) VDB (he's a favourite of mine, although like my colleagues above I accept that I'm living in the past).

You can also add O.Mac and Oliver, who are racing against time with their niggles, but I suspect will get up.

Such joyous news

AFL players to play match against Box Hill at Casey Fields on Saturday.

"The Demons have decided to take the opportunity to get valuable game time into Jeff Garlett (rib), Neville Jetta (quad), Dom Tyson(calf niggle), James Harmes (head knock) and Dean Kent (shoulder) after interrupted pre-season programs due to injury".

Sam Weideman and Joel Smith will also play for Casey.

Other updates:

  • Melbourne expects Jordan Lewis (calf) to be available for round 1.
  • Tom McDonald will need to prove his fitness in a solid training session planned for the rest of the AFL squad at Casey Fields on Friday.

Good to see that so many players are ready to take the field at some level.  If they all get thru it should be a pretty good list to choose from for round 1.

There will be a few unlucky players at the selection table next week.

You would really doubt the sense of playing any player against the Cats who has niggles or who has not had recent match time, such as Lewis. We need players who can run all day and play 4 Q of high intensity footy, otherwise the Cats will run us off our feet.

Misson injury report video up on the club site/app.

Essentially, after Viney tipping Tmac to be good for round 1, we only have Vanders, McKenna and Viney as the only not available players.

That’s bloody good.

Are you applying this to Geelong also ?

It was encouraging; Vanders was particularly good news in terms of recovery - we could use a little of his aggression and ooomph!

Prior to JLT1 Lewis hadn't missed a session all preseason.  And with about 15 preseasons under his belt I suspect he'll be fine as long as he's getting in plenty of match simulation sessions at training.

Fair enough, you are better informed than I am. I thought that he had spent a considerable amount of time in rehab.

Having said that, my main concern with Lewis this year will be his lack of pace and slowing reflexes. .

The roller coaster begins before the season even starts: in the space of 2 days we've gone from having half the side out to nearly everyone bar Viney available!

Tom Morris on 3AW (whoever the heck he is) just said TMac is highly unlikely to play round 1....but doesn’t know the actual nature of his “foot soreness”

Yeah good news if it’s true.

Time will tell.

Interestingly no update on Jones. That probably tells me they expect him to play which is good, but they also don't want to go public with an update on his back.

I think Lewis and ANB get through, always have. They were back running a few days after the injury and have had a lot of time.

I'm not confident on Tom. There's a big step between not running and being ready to play and at best that step using takes 2 weeks no matter the injury.

Not even round 1 and Vanders is still wearing the indefinite tag. It feels like he has been injured for more time than he has been fit. Its going to be a long road back, feel for the bloke.

McKenna seems to be in the same boat, always under the injury cloud. I do wonder if either will make it on the park this season.

t mac report - another metatarsal injury ffs: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/melbourne-swingman-tom-mcdonald-in-doubt-for-round-1-clash-with-geelong-at-the-mcg/news-story/47f971e45c3636e4fef6068f80175a56

looks like jones needs injections to manage his back, and lewis is battling

turf toe?  we need TMc right for sharing ruck duties.

I would rather sacrifice the first couple of games if need be, to get them tight & come home strong & fit.  We have Pedo, we have Frosty.

We can cover for Viney for a couple of games, so they are not carrying serious niggles right thru the season.

Better have them just right for mid season,,,  that entering this season NQR.

Melbourne injury list: pre-round one

Jordan Lewis (calf) – available
Tom McDonald (toe) – test
Pat McKenna (hamstring) – indefinite
Alex Neal-Bullen (quadriceps) – available
Aaron vandenBerg (ankle) – indefinite
Jack Viney (foot) – 1-2 weeks

This injury update was seemingly the first bit of positive news in a long time for both of them. With McKenna it's hard to imagine that they can't fix his hamstrings eventually. Foot problems are on a different level but it's nice to here they plan for Vanders to run outside, being in rehab for an entire year is bad enough without having to do most of it without even joining the group outside.

Just another Nuffy having a guess, if he doesn’t play he can claim it was true if he does play no one will care. I like that he is highly unlikely but doesn’t know what the injury is lol

Injury report: pre round one

This one interests me. No mention at all of the metatarsal injury - so it’s either migrated from the toe to the metatarsal and back to the toe or it was always the toe and there was no hot spot?

Tom McDonald (toe) – test

“Tom’s just had a bit of a sore toe for probably four to six weeks, and we’ve been managing his loads. But we just felt we needed to bite the bullet and get him off legs for 10 to 12 days. We’re going to start to load him towards the end of this week, and just see how that goes. We’ll make a decision on Tom next week.”

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
