Let me simplify it for you...

Maybe none of these players are good enough. The FD would seem to think that's the case.

We don't need more list cloggers but we can develop quality for our own needs and for future trade bait.

You are looking at things in a very one dimensional way and we are far from done and locked out of trading or drafting in 2018...

We haven't played finals for a decade mate.

Question everything the football dept do.

If Goodwin plays Pederson early last year ahead of Spencer and Tim Smith, we play finals.

If Taylor calls out Charlie Curnow instead of Sam Wiedeman a couple of years back, we play finals.

They are not always right. Too many sycophants on here.

^^^

This the so called superdraft next year is based on having plenty of depth in terms of

going very deep in quality players

A high number of quality talls

On another point our FD was one who got their heads around the Academy points system quicker than others. Don't be surprised if they have also prepared for live trading coming in fairly soon

If we take Parish over Oliver we don't get near finals

If Smith and Spencer don't get injured against Richmond we probably win and play finals

If St Kilda took Trac instead of Mccartin we struggle to win QB

It's full of what ifs

Thank god the FD looks forward not back

Some BF profiles...

33 Sydney - Harrison Petty Height, Weight: 194cm, 81kg
Petty was a stand out for the SA side in the Nationals. Has a great intercept marking game. Whilst I am not saying he will become the next Rance he has the ability to become a very valuable player for the Swans. He can swing forward as well. the Swans could do with a reinforced back half as they have an ageing Grundy and some dash and run from Rampe. With Rohan on the decline the Swans need a steadying influence who can mark, intercept and run out of the backline. If you read the below passage from the AFL website it clearly explains why the Swans cant let him slip through the net.
Some clubs rate Petty as one of the best tall defenders available at the draft, with his strong overhead presence and good rebound making him a contender to break into the latter stages of the first round or early in the second round when names are called.

Part of Petty's appeal is the view from various recruiters that he is relatively untapped, with this season his first in the elite talent pathway after coming from a regional background.

The 17-year-old averaged 12 disposals and four marks at the national carnival but did not complete any of the athletic testing at the national NAB AFL Draft Combine after rolling his ankle in the kicking and goalkicking trials on the opening night.

Some Swans supporters may be critical of this selection but a good defender can make or break you when coming up against the 'Gorillas' of the competition.

This kid is uncannily like a young Dustin Fletcher. Except .......a much better kick. He along with Lever will create a wall and carve the opposition up on the rebound.

Inspired drafting and a steal at this pick in my opinion.

Are you suggesting that he will be able to get away with tripping opponents his entire career, and also do PEDs and be lauded as a hero?

Don't forget sliding knees-first into grounded opponents.

I've been a bit meh about our drafting for entirely unreasonable reasons.

I wanted some extra excitement, as to playing style and the unknown re. potential ceiling and development - Liam Ryan, Jack P. etc. Also wanted speed and run, speed and run. A developing KPD isn't so exciting. However:

From my amateur perspective and with all the highlight package provisos (and I'll readily put my hand up and acknowledge that I'm no junior talent scout); this kid looks the absolute goods.

From the available footage: reads the play exceptionally well, technically sound, clean in the contest and by foot, and unflustered/steps up to the level of competition. With basically one year in the system. It's uncanny to me his early similarities to a certain recent trade coup in Lever.

He will also now be learning his craft in part from Jake Lever. My crystal ball: he will shine in the VFL from day one and cause some early selection issues/personnel reshuffles. And without intending to open a can of worms, is a step up on the natural attributes of Omac and will be a ready and fairly prompt replacement.

I'm willing to go early: steal of the draft. Somehow overlooked due to the sense that it was a poor one for KPD's and his rapid ascent making most recruiters a bit nervy to buy in on that spike.

Go Dees.

From the highlights package this kids looks to move really well. Seems to have plenty of time to get to the right places and knows what to do when he gets there. Will be interesting to see how he develops. If we get a good run with injuries I can see us running deep into finals in both seniors and Casey.

As opposed to what? The long list of 17/18 years old's available at that point that we're somehow built like men and are ready to play 22 games in 2018?

Question: how many shovel ready (to use Denial Andrews’ jargon) mids or others do you reckon were available when our turn came about?

Names?

I would not be replacing Oscar too soon. From what I can see from the highlights they both have similar attributes.

Highlights package = grain of salt.  But there is some tremendous judgement of the flight and one grab marking in that package - it's hard to fake.

Just had a look at the draft replay. They mentioned that he just fell over a fence and broke his elbow which will take 6 weeks to recover. Also he's very light so will take a while to fill out.

As others have mentioned looks like Lever 2.0.

Bit surprised we went for yet another key defender, would have thought there were other positions with less depth but clearly there wasn't a suitable ruckman or we would have taken one and I'm guessing he was seen as best available at this pick and if he turns into a star we'll be very happy irrespective of the depth in that position at the moment.

Here it is simplified for you.

We are out of the super draft next year, so there's another opportunity gone to get a quality midfielder.

3 of our mids are almost done.

Only 2 are proven AFL midfielders and will be there in 2020 when we are beating down the door.

We don't need another half forward flanker or key position defender.

Constable or Petruccelle at 31, and Worpol at 37 would have been better selections given our lack of midfield depth.

Out?  We still have picks from the second round onwards.  You are putting too much emphasis on the draft.  You can improve your list in a myriad of ways that doesn't focus on first round picks.

We cannot give up first rounders forever. Need to keep the flow of young talent

Lever and Balic ARE young talent m11

You use your picks to bring in talent, either by drafting or trading. We are loading up for a flag tilt, and were always going to trade top picks for top established talent at some stage.

Some people seem to prefer the excitement of the unknown. Give me a (quality) known quantity any day.

Petty should have gone in the top 10.

I know a player when i see one.  No idea where the phantom draft 'experts' had him, but anywhere outside the top 10 is laughable.

Great steal by Jason Taylor.

Did you look at the vids and all info available of every other player drafted prior to making that claim?

Otherwise it's your post that could be considered laughable.

I don't disagree. As stated, a step up on the natural attributes of. But see Fifty-5's post directly below yours as a starting point of difference. I will also add; better positioning (somewhat as an effect of the former point).

I like the look of his play and it was Buckenara who suggested we got a bargain as he rated him at 22 in the drafte and the best key position player available.

Red hair
Country lad
Late entry to the elite talent pathway after relocating to boarding school
Underdeveloped physically
Standout games with standout attributes
Unpopular pick due to already having similar players on the list with many wanting a needs based pick
Not overly quick but elite agility (for his position, 8.29 according to AFL draft central)

All of those criteria apply to Clarry and to Petty.

I remember many on here saying we should've picked Parish because we already had Viney, Tyson, Petracca, Brayshaw etc and didn't need another inside midfielder.

Talls take a little longer but if in 3 years time this guy is looking good and playing regularly there won't be any complaints. Personally, I think we needed a key defender, but even if we didn't I like the pick.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
