Well done Charlie congratulations.

My son will be spewing as he is a Kangas supporter and rates Charlie highly and cannot belive the Roos didn't pick him. They couldn't get him as a father son as his old man played 81 games with North. Charlie has followed the path of his father, Paul (North Melbourne and Brisbane), grandfather, Bob (Footscray), and great grandfather, Bob snr (Footscray and Melbourne), in making the big-time.

"Charlie out of the spa and ready to go" (MFC website).

Is that the worst pun of all time?

Absolutely stoked about this! I feel he is one that'll play better and more suited to the more quicker tempo of AFL rather then the VFL..

And just quickly, I've had a bit to do with young "Spargs" and I posted this back early January this year.

Gday guys, on one of the training thread there's been a few doubts on young Charlie about his size and whether he can translate his ability to AFL level. Thought I'd bring this thread up and have my 2 cents worth.

Just on Spargo, I had a bit to do with him when he was in the under 16s bushies . I didn't bother to write anything up on him when we drafted him (lack of interest in demonland at the time) but I thought I'd post my thought a on him now.

Goody is going to fall in love coaching this young fella, he is 18 years old going onto 25 in terms of maturity and level headed. He was driven right from the very young age to succeed in footy and make AFL. He started playing senior footy for Albury in the strong Ovens and Murray league (step below VFL) at 16 and was still running rings around former AFL players with such ease. It was tipped right from then that this kid could potentially be the next big thing despite his size. He was quick, tough as F**k, and most importantly, driven and determined to make it.

Despite being a quiet and down to earth sort of fella, he just oozes leadership on field! We played a praccy match against Bendigo once and he was captain for the day. The whole day he was barking orders, setting up midfield stoppages, encouraging teammtes, and giving direct feedback to coaching and senior officials on what was going right and wrong. He'll be in the leadership group in a couple of years. Mark my words.

Obviously being in boarding school this year I barely got time to see any of his games (injured also). But we got word back from some recruiters that if it wasn't for injury he would be top 10 without a doubt. 3 clubs had even made mentioned that if he was just a smidge taller and injury free, they had penciled him for top 5. Every club rated him and the giants were absolutely filthy when they lost first rights to him. He is a genuine talent.

If I was to compare him to someone in terms of toughness, leadership and skill? it would be Joel Selwood. He has everything that you need in terms of the culture you're trying to build and set.

Yes I've pumped up his tyres, but the biggest test for him will be the transition to AFL level. The likes of Caleb Daniel and Eddie Betts have shown that it is possible if you've got the ticker and drive to succeed. I believe young Spargo has this.

The likes of Jones, Viney, Oliver and Lewis will crave having this kid in the side running full tilt into packs and come out ball in hand.

I don't want to put too much pressure on the kid but in my honest opinion, he is an absolute beauty!

Hope that helps.

Great story.  Great news.  Go Charlie

Very nice debut from the kid!

18 possessions, 2 goals is an awesome start. The kid is born to play football, well done to him.

Congrats Chas.

One of our sparks when we needed them most.

Great debut to remember for life.

First goal - Clean hands in the contest.

Great debut - good hands - hard at it - loved him taking on Goddard!

Great debut today! Was in everything early, loves the contest, clean hands, reads the drop of the ball well, 100% disposal efficiency. Loved him getting into a scrap with Goddard too!

As soon as we drafted him I knew we were onto a winner, injury is the only reason he wasn't a top 10 pick. All he needs to do to solidify his place in the team and thrive is bring that intensity consistently and play to his strengths. Well done Spargs!

At last a rover who kicks goals, crumbs packs and has attitude. Go Charlie

Great debut!

He smacks of Macaulay Culkin though. I thought the game against Essendon was another home alone movie...

Nah, that’s Zac Guthrie.

My 14yo started calling him Charlie Spargoal!

Great debut from the big burly fellow (he is my height!)

I wouldn’t underestimate the impact he had today. He was a team lifter. Used it really smartly and finished off the hard work early when others couldn’t. Like Fritzel he’s looking an excellent pick up

GREAT debut by a kid who to me looks like a footballer first, and built himself around that.

Not sure if this is too relevant to the thread but just wanted to pump up jonesy for getting in on spargos scuffle. Captain who's got your back from game one.

Could be our first rising star nomination in a long time. On that, is Fritsch too old for rising star?  Had another good game and clearly too good for VFL.

Too small they said, a bloody midget.

I was seated behind the goals during the third quarter. Charlie was being minded by Andrew McGrath and their was very little difference in their height (if at all).

This whole discussion about Charlie’s height is a bit silly really. The kid’s going to be very good! Nice debut.

thanks for that mate, do you think he will stay a small forward or go for short bursts into the middle?

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
