Peter Moore offered his help to Melbourne a few years back, saying on camera if there is anything i can do to help i would help.

I couldn't be more happy to see Watts go. This is like Christmas coming early.  Whoever wants to keep Watts can't see the forest for the trees. You can't carry soft guys like Watts, especially in finals. Every week he plays we know one thing and that is that he isn't going to give 100% and that his tackling efforts will be disgraceful. Pedersen played better in 5 games than Watts has showed in his whole career. Give him away for some steak knives and thanks very much.

And yet, in our biggest game in 11 years - our resident soft [censored] was one of the few to stand up.

And that is rewriting history that nonsense about Pedersen. That guy was dropped as many times as Watts this season...

I'm suggesting the trade looks like

Melb Out: Watts, Pick 10, 27, 45

Melb In: Lever, Pick 29, 35, 53

Adl Out Lever Pick 35, 53

Adl In: Pick 10, 27, 45

Port Out: Pick 29

Post: In Watts

Everyone a winner

Losing Watts in this scenario for a slight upgrade of picks seems 'overs.' Given Watts has met with PA, it's not unrealistic though.

Yes, i remember it because it was Moore and at first i thought he was going to have a go at the club, but no he just wanted to offer his help.

If Watts goes, and Max gets injured, who does the ruck work?Cause Spencer 's not around anymore.

ANOTHER TOP PICK LEAVING MELBOURNE

Former number one draft pick Jack Watts may need to start looking up real estate listings in Adelaide as the trade rumours begin to heat up.

The Herald Sun reports Watts and manager Paul Connors flew to South Australia and met with Port Adelaide on Wednesday.

No, this is the point, and you guys keep missing it.

If we're placing all our emphasis on defensive effort and none on attacking effort, I don't know that's a good thing. There needs to be a balance. If there's no attacking effort, nobody runs into space and we keep turning the ball over because we don't care enough about disposal skills. I'm not sure we've got that balance right.

Look at the Crouch brothers. What's made them so much more dangerous this year is that they've both worked hard on improving their disposal. I can't see a similar improvement among any of our mids - in fact some (notably Tyson) have gone backwards in their disposal, either because they couldn't be bothered or because our coach doesn't think it's important. Adelaide, to me, have a great balance of attacking & defensive effort.

This is not about for or against Watts - it's about what a post-Watts Demons will look like.

But that's the path our coaches have chosen, and it's their right and responsibility to make that choice. I just hope that we won't suffer post-Watts because our disposal skills are so shite and we keep turning it over at half forward like we did in the latter half of the season.

Akum, we aren't missing it. It's just that if you don't get the ball enough you don't dispose of it. And if the opposition run past you with ease then you leak goals on top of that. A semi consistent Watts would provide that decision making and pint point disposal you say but we don't see it often enough so its not a big loss if he leaves

Three way trade:

Balic and Freo 3rd rounder to Melbourne

Watts to Port

Port second rounder to Freo.

No source, just making stuff up to put off doing any real work.

That is the question Dingo.

Max cannot ruck all season,

If Max goes down we will be in big trouble. We saw that in 2017.

Assume the club has someone in mind but the risk of going in with Max and a few rookies is a big problem.

Have a little faith, Ernest.  The off season is but a pup.  Plenty of water to go under the bridge before we need to worry about those sorts of problems.

Every player has a right to explore his options and Jack is clearly doing that. Look back at what Jones said post season of expectation and Jack. He clearly won no friends when he returned in less than ideal condition pre season and was dropped when his form post mid season injury was poor.

He has a contract and if he chooses to stay he will stay but may be exploring options if he is not comfortable with what the club wants from him in the next 2 years. Clearly there is still some learning to do about club culture and the relentless pursuit of winning, which we all see. Maybe Jack needs a change, but I doubt he will be comfortable at Port Adelaide who pride themselves on their never say die go hard culture.

Jack Watts for pick 29 reminds me of the great Stef Martin fire sale of 2012.

Wow if we are relying on Watts to be our back up Ruck we are seriously struggling.

T Mac / Pedo can do the role if Max goes down.  Hogan/frost is desperate

we fwd/ruck should be high on the recruiting list.

maybe Trengove will come in as cover?

No we won't / didn't.

Pedo / TMac / Watts filled in with aplomb whilst our midfielders adjusted to sharking off the other rucks. We played some of our best footy this year in Max's absence.

We would be BIG losers if this happened. Balic is virtually unknown and couldn't get many games with lowly Fremantle. Never heard of him until he came up on this thread. 3rd rounder from Freo wow! What a bargain. I think a lot of Watts bashers are not going to be pleased when Watts stars against us.Imagine if he did a Collingwood against us next season. Our forward line is going to look very thin and our skill level will drop which is not what we let happen.

Maybe we are after Trengove as well. Even though he is a RFA, perhaps trading Watts will see PA not match an offer that they could reasonably match.

Bring in Trengove and Lever and it allows TMAC to play as a more permanent forward (and probably do just as good a job as Watts (minus the good disposal). Trengove could also be ruck relief to allow Max some time to rest.

Then go after Gaff for that good delivery into the forward line.

I could more than handle the loss of Watts plus picks and minor players if it meant we brought in Lever and Trengove to sure up the backline (which did leak a fair bit this year), TMAC going to FF to partner Hogan (he has a tank and is a far better contested mark than Watts can ever be) and Gaff coming in to give us run and good disposal.

Balic is worth nothing

Nothing's a tad harsh, but Watts-freo 3rd pick???

That's opening your pocket to get picked !!

If we take our red and blue glasses off and consider what Watts has done in his 8 years at the club, he isn't worth a whole lot more to be honest.

I'd rather keep Jack, believe it or not, but I think it's more so because I don't want to see him succeed elsewhere.  The problem is that I don't think clubs will be falling over themselves to trade for him, and for that reason we probably need to take the best available offer if we've decided as a club to move on from him.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
