To be fair, I think we might have seen the luckiest 50 metre penalty ever yesterday. Viney was gifted our first goal after Tyson handpassed the ball back to him for his free kick. The St Kilda player clearly thought the free kick had been given to Tyson (as, I think, did most of the crowd) who he thought had started play again by handpassing to Viney.

True.

Another example of stupid umpiring.  As that northern judge in the old Rumpole of the Bailey series used to say - "apply some commonsense"

Good luck finding the full rules on the AFL site.  If they are there then they are well hidden.  I've had to rely on Prof Google to find them elsewhere.

I have a copy. They are easy to find through Google. They are annoyingly vague as you would expect.

It might have been lucky but it was there. It stopped Viney from playing on

True, but the Saint player was already within the protected zone of Viney (and not of Tyson).  But (if my recollection is right) the umpire waited until he tackled Viney to pay the 50m.  A little Northern common sense would have resulted in the umpire telling him to clear out as is usual.    Maybe that would have inhibited a quick play-on by Viney, but in the overall game's interest, I'd rather not see umpires doing anything which encourages players deliberately confecting 50m penalties by faking who has the free. (Not suggesting Tyson was faking in this case.)

It was lucky on a couple of levels. One it looked all tge world as if it was a tyson ball and he played on.

More importantlt we had butchered 4 or 5 clear scoring opportunities and rge gifted goal got us rolling.

Yes the saints player was unlucky but he broke the golden rule of not playing to the whistle

Well done. Can we refer page 13, diagram 1 to both Channel 7 and Foxtel and ask them just where is there a "quarterback" that they often refer to in their comments. Are you listening Dwayne you nuff nuff.

So do I . But did you find it on the AFL website?  Even if I do a google search like:rules site:afl.com.auall I find is useless guff on the AFL site.  The full rules of any sport should be prominent on their web pages.  Maybe I need new glasses.

if you replace rules with laws above you do better, but not to anything that is linked on the afl.com.au site.

You could clearly hear the umpire mention multiple times it was Vineys free kick prior to Tyson handing the ball back, honest mistake by the Saints player, obviously didn't hear the ump.

Didn't catch that.  In a noisy grand final it amazes me that the players can be expected to hear anything.  Do the umpires make allowances for that when there is a noisy crowd?

I should have been clearer, watching the replay you can hear the ump stating it was a free to Viney. They had to award the 50 even though I doubt very much the Saints player heard the call.

Sheer bad luck on their end, but if they didn't pay it I guess we would have players all the time saying they didn't hear calls as excuses.

Saints supporters around me were getting stuck into Max as well as myself and any Demons supporters having a go at the umps. One beast of a Saints supporter who looked straight out of a Steve King novel tried to explain that you can't use an arm to push off...within a matter of seconds along the AFL Members wing at a throw in, Saints had 3 men up at the throw in, and Max was blatantly pushed off the contest. We won the clearance but Max threw his arms up demanding accountability. We went forward minutes later and Hannan kicked the sealer and I got right stuck into the Bogans around me.

The third quarter leading up to that moment was an abhorrent umpiring display. It didn't improve much in the 4th leading up to this exact moment even if we did start getting some calls.

There appears no love from the umps for Max maybe he is some kind of lippmeister?

I work with three saints supporters and they were so upset to lose, they think their team has gone backwards and I agree with them.

What was most pleasing from my point of view is that was a finals like game and our boys basically all stood up, while the saints had a handful who played okay

David King analysed the free kicks in his segment on the couch. Suspects an umpiring conspiracy or tax as he called it. Seems clubs have complained how Max positions himself and uses his hands. They showed 3 of the frees and 2 were rubbish, over umpiring by the same umpire. The other has Longer with his hand on max's face but Max may be fending him off.

Final King analysis if that is how you are going to umpire centre bounces apply it to all ruckmen not just Max. Hayden kennedy has a lot to answer for and clearly the club are aware of clubs complaining about Maxies dominance. The umpiring dept is a bit of a joke but they never fess up to making errors. An umpire friend of mine asked me today what I thought of the mark that wasn't paid to Ben brown in Tassie it was worse than anything we saw yesterday.

If anyone can find them on the AFL site, please let us know.  If they are not there it speaks volumes about the AFL in my view.

The joke organisation known as "the AFL" does not have them on their web site.

Closest you'll find is this, which is their "this season's interpretations" page, full of explanatory videos which no one, especially the umpires, pays any attention to. http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/laws-of-the-game

Even then it's hard to find unless you use the search function.

If you want the actual written laws of the game you have to go aflcommunityclub.com.au or aflvic.com.au.

Could anything point more clearly to the AFL's contempt for their own rules than this.

I bet you can't find it printed anywhere.

As for the tosh about a stiff arm vs a bent arm its bollocks

15.4.3 Permitted Contact Other than the Prohibited Contact identified under Law 15.4.5, a Player may make contact with another Player: (a) by using their hip, shoulder, chest, arms or open hands provided that the football is no more than 5 metres away from the Player; (b) by pushing the other Player with an open hand in the chest or side of the body provided that the football is no more than 5 metres away from the Player; (c) by executing a Correct Tackle; (d) by executing a Shepherd provided that the football is no more than 5 metres away from the Player; or (e) if such contact is incidental to a Marking contest and the Play

Kennedy clarified free kicks against Max tonight as being for a straight arm fend off by Max at the contest. The only problem was it was not a straight arm (Max's) and the rule did not seem to be applied in any other game on the weekend....go figure.

Perhaps Kennedy could have .... (light laugh) ... quoted the part of the rules that mention a "straight arm".

Oh don't tell me! It's an "interpretation"!

The game is being umpired in accordance with rules that exist only in someone's head.

Can't stand Dwayne I stopped listening 2 Hooksy & Healey after he replaced Hooks. Dwayne  loves the sound of h8s own voice

Maxy has always struggled against the saints, with the exception of rnd 1. Having the umps plucking frees doesn't help

Played a great game on the weekend. Was the main reason why we were up by 40 points. Saints only came back when he gave up in the ruck for the fear of having a free paid against him. The umpires cost of massively in the 3rd qtr and should be disciplined.

No, that was there every day of the week.

The St Kilda player didn't clear the area, irrespective of who the free kick was to. It's a rule that the umpires have gone from paying too often to not paying at all.

Correct decision.

I'm not saying it was incorrect; only that we were lucky.

Having said that, while it was definitely correct, I'm not comfortable with the rule in the first place. Sure, if a player's encroachment into the protected area impacts the player with the ball, I'm all for it. But the number of times it has no impact but a 50 metre penalty is awarded seems to me to unfairly damage the team without the ball. I guess that's the price we have to pay for wanting "black and white" rules which are not subject to the umpires' interpretation.

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
