Always next year with some on here

Do you reckon we are a chance on Saturday night? The bookies donโ€™t see us as a realistic Premier this year... #believe

One of Brownโ€™s issues in 2020 was his fitness. That being the case, one of the best arguments for him coming to theย Melbourne Football Club could well be the presence at the Demos ofย fitness guru Darren Burgess,ย its strength and conditioning manager. If anyone can get him back on track and kicking goals, itโ€™s this bloke.

Im probably behind the times but do we definitely have Burgess for another year?

Would not touch Brown with a barge pole. Too fragile, too limited. If he doesn't catch it, he's done.

The best (ie big coin) forwards do more than catch it; even the King boys. Brown can't.

His highlights reels would Beg to differ!!

If North really want to offload him, we should be able to get him for cheaper than a 2nd round pick.

Couple of points about this.

1) You're assuming North want to get rid of him, not the other way around.

2) They essentially pushed him out the door under Shaw, so they can't ask for the world, but doesn't mean we can get him for a bag of crisps. He'll still likely cost at least a second rounder, possibly more.

North don't want him. ย When you air that, your bargaining power is significantly reduced.

Yeah, hence my 'they can't ask for the world'. But you said less than a second rounder. Good luck with that. Providing Brown passes the fitness test, if we could land him for a single second rounder, I'd take it and run.

Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get what you need.

We generally have to pay a little more ALL the time red. (until we become a desitnation club, if that ever happens)

It has been raised a couple of times in terms of our players - but those rejecting Ben Brown based on some perception of flawed attributesย need a psychologist. A leading goal-kickerย wants to come to us for probably a second-round pick, but no he can't play below his legs. What? We have been struggling to kick goals, but Brown is the wrong fit. What? It feels like a special sub-branch of MFCSS. Anyway, good luck to any opposition team 0trying to work out to do with this lot in and rotating through the forward-line.ย

Brown
Jackson
Weid
Fritsch
Pickett
Petracca
Gawn

Another small pressure forward would be nice. Would love Brown and Smith as inclusions and then throw a bit of bank atย McDonald-Tipungwuti. KPF, left wing and extra small forward sorted. Another running half-back and we have no holes left in our best 22, with decent depth.ย

ย

SEN saying he had a medical at the club yesterday.

North will ask for our 2nd rnd pick:ย  # 23

But he hasn't said he wants to join us.ย

A so called key position forward, North don't want him anymore. What is really going on ?

Usually these scenarios involve WAGS but not in this case I believe.

So you are happy to give up any chance of competing in deep finals for the next few years on the hope that Weidย and Jackson in the absence of Brown develop so we can contend in 3-4 years time assuming everything goes to plan.

I think if we bring Brown in weโ€™ll stuff around trying to play 3 talls and then eventually settle on one of Brown or Weid and wonโ€™t be significantly better.

Thereโ€™s so many other positions to improve and if we invest in hard running skillful players the goals will come.

How many years would he want?

3 at the very least you would think, considering he was holding out for 4 with North.

As LH mentions above, the wheels are certainly in motion from our end in terms of getting him across to the club, but I'd say the length of the contract and how much money is involved might be the deciding factor for Brown, especially if a few clubs are interested.

I would expect four years. Is 27. As another poster pointed out all of the leading goal-kickers this year in Hawkins, Kennedy, and Dixon are all 30 or above.ย

Garry Lyon on Melbourne's pursuit of Ben Brown: I think he would only add to their forward line setup, his very best is great but it's just about whether he gets back to it. He would take a bit of pressure off Sam Weideman - you're not giving up the farm for (Brown) though.

where's the farm?

pick 23 for an injured 28 year old who is not wanted by his club seems overs to me.

Yes but why not go they At ย the same time DeeSย

Can easily be fine in draft selective recruiting of B+ players ie day a Lyons or similar but outside runner Narkle ?ย
whu nit Stephenson as a mid? Although a bit timid perhaps!

If the medical comes up fine, then the injuries don't worry me too much.ย  He's been pretty much injury free prior to this year.

The second round pick does feel like slight overs to me considering that they don't want him.ย ย

Medical ok -> offer -> nominate -> negotations with north -> done

ย

?

ย

you could probably infer that if heโ€™s doing a medical heโ€™s good to come to Demonland

I wonder if too much is being made of his injury.ย  Unless North were telling porkies nearly 2 months ago, reports suggest the knee injury wasn't serious:

โ€œBen had an MRI yesterday and was cleared of any ligament damage,โ€ Rawlings said.ย  โ€œHe sustained pinching of the lateral knee joint and reported pain and discomfort, but both have subsided." August 7 Report

He then had surgery.ย  Detailed report in here:ย  Sept 2 Report

This time last year he would be a mid 1st round pick.ย  Not sure the injury downgrades his trade value much lower than #23.ย  Also there may be 'steak knives''/later pick swaps involved.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
