Carlton young gun Charlie Curnow has been named the Round 16 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee. 

"Curnow played a key role in the Blues' eight-point loss to Melbourne over the weekend, recording 19 disposals, two goals and a game-high 10 score involvements."

 

Why exactly have we drafted a kid at pick 9 that needs another 1 or 2 years to get an AFL body and impose himself on the game, who's position we have to have our best CHB (TMAC) to cover for the foreseeable future and look at drafting in Lever while Carlton have their draftee running around impacting yesterdays match who was taken at pick 12 ?

Weid was always going to take longer to develop than Curnow. Sam is a true KPF whereas Curnow is a KPF who will eventually move into the midfield.

I still getting over not drafting Chris Grant 1988, I'll work my way up to being worried about Weideman when he's been playing for more than 18 months.

 

Just out of curiosity, did you wait for Curnow to play a good match before writing this thread or is it something you've always believed?

You draft players according to who you believe will be the better player over the course of their careers. The alternative is a team full of Rhys Palmer, Daniel Rich, Cale Morton, Mitch Robinson, Jordan Gysberts.

So Curnow has a couple of good games and we need a 'reprise' thread?  Poor form, Dom.

No doubt Curnow has had a good month, but Weideman was always going to be a 'long term' selection for the club.  He was coming off some serious injuries and we knew it would take time for him to put on the right amount of size and develop a tank to play consistently at AFL level.

Absolutely not, i have faith in our recruiting department and back them in 2015 to make the most informed decisions, but i couldn't help but be left scratching my head yesterday with how well Curnow had played and how he imposed himself on each contest while Weideman has been absolutely disappointing this year. These questions over his body shape and development don't cover his one-paced jogging and lack of effort to get to contests earlier in the year that had the whole forum in chorus about needing him in the VFL for the rest of the year as we were basically fielding 21 players with him in the side.

Sometimes players turn out better than players taken before them in the draft. 

Sometimes players take longer to develop than others.

It's a freakin' lottery. You're purchasing a 10% complete product.

This is a seriously tedious topic. I honestly thought Melbourne supporters would be sick of beating ourselves up over who was selected where, but it would seem our self flagellation knows no bounds.

Relax DT, even a Ferrari needs a tune-up

These hindsight threads sh!t me (yeah, I know "don't read them!" and all that palava). Kind of only useful if we are thinking of trading for them eg. Lever. Now, more than anytime in the last 20 years, we should be showing faith in our drafting/recruiting staff and their calls

More than happy with the promise weid has shown, I think long term he'll fill a position for us that no other player at that selection could have. 

 

Wait until Weed bulks up he will be a rippa.

I heard we took Weid just because he looks like Pavlich.

Haven't rated the Weid's performances in the seniors this year, but quite happy to reserve final judgement on him for a few years yet.  He did show a few glimpses of class and his potential against Hawthorn last year and his haul in the VFL a few weeks back was fairly impressive, even if it was only at that level.  Pretty common knowledge that most KPPs take a few years to develop, they aren't all freaks like Hogan .

Even Hogan regularly has people picking holes in his game left right and centre.  He is stillmany years off his peak still which gives you some idea of how good he could be.

 

Weideman has excellent skills, he attacks the contest and the pack, he puts in when the ball hits the deck and he is a competitor.  Too many people are basing their assumption over a match when he was corked in the first quarter or matches when he was forced to play as our number one focal point against seasoned teams and defenses due to injury and suspension.

 

Curnow's got some talent (as you'd expect from a top ten pick) and I believe he'll develop into a good player.  That doesn't immediately mean that we have made a blue in recruiting a taller, lighter and less experienced KPF.

Some people have ridiculously unfair expectations for young key forwards. 

Weed was always going to take a while, the majority of key forwards do. Honestly, we probably won't see him lock down a spot in the side for another two years. But for a player of his youth, I think he's shown some great signs this year. His first two games were very encouraging and he demonstrated some great tackling pressure in the Adelaide match. His six goal performance a couple weeks ago showed he is on the right track.

Not in the slightest bit concerned with this selection. Curnow will be a bloody good player for the Blues, but the Weed is a long-term forward who will form a formidable partnership with Hogan over the next decade.

Do you get food envy at a restaurant when you see what the folk on the next table have?  Should I have had the lamb instead of the filet steak?  The chips look nicer than my mash  

Our recruiters have done a fine job recently, and I am prepared to wait a year or two to see how Weidemann turns out.

Nice analogy but i would say Wiedeman is currently a toasted sandwhich thats been cobbled together in 10 seconds rather than a filet steak with chips, and yes i'd be pretty envious of the lamb and mash over on the other table.

When it comes to drafting and list management I would give Jason Taylor and Todd Viney the benefit of the doubt over Silvagni. Just saying.

It's hard to tell if the slow cooked lamb or the rare steak is better. Let's wait until it is all digested.
