LDVC.  I can relate to what you infer however LM has always been a narky niggly shlt. 

I was there the day he and dumbo dlpshlt dementedco cleaned up Tulip. I literally saw the menace in his eyes. These sorts of players premeditate actions...bit like that West Coast player

probably should not have happened in the sense that for its day it was not that far outside the pale.

The media did not know how to deal with it as suddenly because it was a criminal case there could be no comment.Similarly when it came before the courts it was a bit of a fizzer in the sense that if I recall correctly he got a good behaviour bond.

The article you have linked to is fascinating as it suggests some reasons why the charges were laid.

The most "entertaining one I can remember" is when a reserves player jumped the fence at South Melbourne Oval and hit a spectator. In those days the reserves match of the day was televised and the seniors was available only on replay. Banned for a number of years if I recall was the punishment but no police charges,

My memory of the Matthews Smith and Giles incidents is that the thug punched them both in the back of the head. Bugg & Mills were facing each other... big difference for mine. Perhaps the AFL will apply the Barry Hall rule and clear Bugg to play against Blues!

Bugg proves the case that most footballers are not rocket scientists.

I would prefer he does not play again in 2017. He just gives us another problem we don't need.

Was at that game, umpire was picking on him, went back to D.V League from Pies.

It wasn't acceptable, but it was accepted by those controlling the game. That's why players such as Jimmy O'Dea, Carl Ditterich, Mal Brown, Robbie Muir, Cowboy Neale, David Rhys-Jones, Ron Andrews and going back even further Mopsy Fraser and Jack Dyer were able to go around king-hitting players in-play and behind-the-play all the time. I'm definitely not condoning how Leigh Matthews (or any of them) played, but the way he played was not inconsistent with the standards of the day.

The Neville Bruns incident and the following court action was the community's way of telling the game's administrators it was time to clean up the game. Without doing any analysis, I suspect that the Matthews-Bruns incident was the turning point and on-field thuggery reduced thereafter.

In summary, all I'm trying to say is that Leigh Matthews was a product of his time. And if he played today he would play the way the modern game requires.

Perhaps we could hope for a formula 1 type penalty:

slightly off topic, but the mrp which bumped bugg to the tribunal gave cam mccarthy 3 (down to 2) for a dangerous tackle. I've watched the video and that seems a very tough sentence. I would have thought a fine would suffice. what did others think?

If the " sentence"  is too harsh I'd be disappointed if the club doesn't appeal.( Not surprised however )

Funny experience shapes how we view players differently.  I'm too young to have seen him play so I only know him as a jovial and kinda cuddly looking coach... with an ironic nickname.
